1 YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY The City University of New York DEPARTMENT: SUBJECT CODE AND TITLE: Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering Technology EET2251/ET452 Electric Machines Laboratory COURSE DESCRIPTION: Experiments are performed to enhance the understanding of the principles of operation of machines studied in EET2150/ET322, to develop proficiency in wiring the machines and associated controls, in checking circuitry, in using power test equipment and report writing. PREREQUISITE: TEXTBOOK: COURSE OBJECTIVES/ COURSE OUTCOMES: EET2150/ET322 Department Laboratory Manual Upon completion of this course the student will posses a working knowledge of the construction, operation and wiring of the following machines, as well as writing reports of their laboratory efforts: 1. DC Motors and Generators. (ABET Criteria 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f, 3h, PC. a) 2. AC Motors and Alternators, both single and three phase. (ABET Criteria 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f, 3h, PC. a) 3. Single and Three Phase Transformers. (ABET Criteria 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f, 3h, PC. a) TOPICS: Topics include the relationships between the magnetic field/ electrical generation and mechanical motion of electrical machines. 3 Assessment The following assessment techniques are correlated to the course objectives as follows: In addition, each assessment technique incorporates one or more of the following ABET Criterion 3 outcomes (3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f, 3g, 3h, PC. a). Course Objectives 1. Obtain a working knowledge of the wiring, construction, and electrical/mechanical operation of DC Motors and Generators Assessment 1.1 Wire the machines according to the schematics. Measure the characteristics of the Shunt and Compound Generators from 0 to 100 % of rated output. 1.2 Wire the machines according to the schematics. Measure the speed and torque characteristics of the Shunt, Compound and Series motors. 2. Obtain a working knowledge of the installation and principles of operation of AC Motors and Alternators. 2.1 Wire the machines according to the schematics. Measure the slip, torque and efficiency of three phase induction motors. Obtain efficiency curve as a function of load. 2.2 Wire the machines according to the schematic. Measure the voltage regulation of the three-phase alternator under load at various power factors. 3. Understand the installation and operation of single and three phase transformers. 3.1 Wire the transformers according to the schematics. Perform the open circuit and short circuit tests to obtain the transformer characteristics using a single phase transformer. From the transformer test data calculate the efficiency and percent regulation. Investigate various threephase transformer configurations.
