4 Established in 1994 in Bernareggio (in the province of Monza and Brianza, Italy), Ares comes from the natural evolution of an existing manufacturing company of outdoor luminaire present on the international market since Ares has been committed from the outset to reflecting the constant evolution of the outdoor lighting sector, offering innovative, high quality and sophisticated lighting products, manufactured with noble materials including aluminium, stainless steel and glass. Ares soon recognized the potential of LED light sources, with a view to offering fixtures featuring high efficiency, reduced energy consumption and with a constant focus on environmental protection. Today the Ares production facility covers an area of over 12,000 sqm, including the research and development department, testing laboratories and a painting and coating system based on advanced technology. In 2010, the Aresled division was created, comprising an automatic assembly line for circuit boards and a production department for wiring and assembly. The constant desire to grow has made Ares a benchmark company in the sector, exporting its products worldwide and addressing a broad target of consumers who are increasingly aware of the numerous benefits linked to comfortable, safe and efficient lighting. In 2015 Ares enters the Flos group. 6 LED Technology To obtain white light from an LED is not easy. The story and a Nobel Prize tell us of 30 years spent by the scientific community to search for the right combination of materials that would allow to get a diode with blue emission. From this diode, for luminescence and phosphorescence, try to fill the visible spectrum and therefore have white light. Since then more than 20 years have passed and, even if the basic principle has remained the same, the construction technology of the diode and the quality of the mixtures of pigments, the phosphors, have evolved and refined exponentially as a reaction to the increasing quality requirements of the market. Today we can say that the overtaking is done and that the main light source is LED. Indeed, the novelties offered by the manufacturers of lighting fixtures are exclusively focused on "solid-state light." The reasons for this success are to be found in various factors like an increased awareness of environmental matters and, the most effective of all, the high level of technology, quality and reliability reached by all main manufacturers of LEDs, that doesn t make the market miss the old light sources. If at the beginning of the history of white LEDs, the light emitted could only be cool, of dubious quality and attractiveness and with lighting features that were more suitable for gadgets than for lighting fixtures, year after year the offer evolved and today we can count on dozens of variations both in colour temperature and in colour rendering with an unprecedented level of quality and efficiency across the whole range. There is no general rule for the selection of the colour temperature in a LED product, it is just a matter of personal preference or lighting requirements. The impact of the colour of light is mainly psychological. The human mind, conditioned by thousands of years of social evolution, perceives warm light (3000K colour temperature) as soft, inviting and enveloping while cool light as hard and sharp. Moreover, the emission of warm white lighting fixtures is more similar to the old incandescent and halogen bulbs which are gradually phased out. 8 H2O STOP: HOW TO STOP WATER INGRESS H2O STOP An inaccurate installation of the luminaire with ineffective connection (insulating tape, self-amalgamating tape or sheath inaccurately used) may lead to water passage along the cable and consequently to water ingress in the fitting. All ground recessed luminaires are equipped with a H2O STOP system or resin coated devices giving effective protection against water passage along connecting cables. 10 SPD: PROTECTION AGAINST OVERVOLTAGES IN OUTDOOR LED LIGHTING FIXTURES The use of LEDs in lighting equipments has highlighted the problem of overvoltages caused by direct or indirect electrical charges. The LED is a diode which works on constant current and with a relatively low fall of voltage to its heads, so it is particularly sensitive to electrostatic discharges and disturbances based on impulses. These problems may arise from: - Disturbances inherent in the electricity mains; insertion or removal of strongly reactive charges, faults in the cables, or a strong harmonic distortion in the mains; Overvoltages result from transitory impulses varying in intensity which can damage the lighting fixture up to failure. Disturbances are mainly differential, generated by the ignition of large electric motors (pumps, lifting equipment, compressors, etc ) which are in the same line as the lighting fixtures or close to residential areas (with the same electricity distribution station). - Overvoltages arising from the environment: direct or indirect atmospheric discharges or unexpected and excessive accumulation of electrostatic charges on the equipment. Phenomena of this type mainly concern lighting fixtures on pole (functioning as antennas) as well as aerial electricity lines positioned in isolated areas. Class II appliances, especially, are more sensitive to this type of problem because they do not provide an immediate discharge path to earth. To try to control these phenomena ARES offers an SPD device (Surge Protection Device) to be connected close to the lighting fixtures it has to protect or above the derivation box (if the line is not particularly long). The use of additional overvoltage arresters strongly contributes to the protection of all electronic devices installed in the house, including LED luminaires. This device functions in common and differential mode at the same time, by absorbing any overvoltage and discharging it, depending on its nature, towards earth or neutral. The closer it is installed to the appliances it has to protect, the more effective this type of protection is, and it should be remembered that an earth connection is needed to protect the appliance effectively. In the case of Class I appliances, the SPD may be installed near the appliance or, if this is not possible, in the electrical panel. For Class II appliances, instead, two different situations should be considered: - If possible, make sure that the metallic housing of the appliance is in contact with the earth and then implement the SPD, considering this connection as a PE terminal. - If that is not possible, install the SPD above the appliance, in the derivation box, and ensure that the panel at least is earthed so that it can offer, albeit less effectively, a protection against common-mode discharges. The use of power supplies which are able to stand this type of disturbance does not produce total immunity, and so it is important for the plant designer to consider the use of additional protections on the basis of: - The type of plant (overhead or buried line, and the length of the installation). - The location of the installation (an isolated area, subject or otherwise to frequent atmospheric phenomena, especially discharges). - Type of installation (on pole, on the wall, in the ground). - System insulation class. 11 Double Painting: Painting Double layer coating for high resistance to corrosion: The aluminium components are painted with a double coat using powders which are complaint with QUALICOAT standards: a first layer of epoxy powder (with excellent chemical and mechanical resistance) and a second finishing layer of polyester powder (resistant to UV rays and atmospheric agents).the entire painting process of the aluminium fitting starts from components which have been sand-blasted in advance to make the surface more porous and increase the adherence of the paint. The procedure includes in-house alkaline and acid washing to clean the surfaces completely, followed by rinsing with demineralised water to remove any residue particles, subsequently a chemical conversion treatment is done to protect against rusting.
