There is a very good reason reputable LED downlight manufacturers go to all the trouble and expense of designing and fitting insulation guards to make sure the LED downlights will go the distance. These guards are designed to keep thermal insulation from touching the heat sinks Extensive testing has shown a gap of as little as 12mm maintained between insulation and the heat sink will result in LED junction temperatures (the most critical point) being reduced up to 22 C. This is hugely significant in terms of LED life and performance, or lumen depreciation in lighting talk. Mike Austin, Home Lighting s Technical Manager and member of the Lighting Council NZ, explains the need for insulation guards on IC and IC-4 rated downlights. Consider this excerpt from the article Lifetime of White LEDs published by the US Department of Energy: The primary cause of LED lumen depreciation is heat generated at the LED junction...operating the LED at higher than design temperatures will significantly decrease useful life. If you look at the range of LED downlights on the market today you will find the majority DO NOT have insulation guards fitted. Why? Because they are imported exactly as they are sold in other countries where there are no IC or IC-4 rated downlights. The i-cage will insure stated lifetime of the product will not be compromised, while making installation easy! We are seeing some manufacturers and importers claiming their LED drivers can be covered in building insulation. Up until now, Home Lighting have insisted that all our drivers should be located above any building insulation for good reason. After the driver was covered in insulation, tests show a decrease of over 20 C at the driver Tc when the Home Lighting i-cage was fitted. All drivers contain electronic components that are typically mounted on a PCB and contained in a housing. One of the most heat sensitive components is the capacitor which normally has a Tc of around 70-C. 53 mm The Tc is the critical maximum allowable operating temperature of the weakest component in the driver and in most cases is the capacitor. If this temperature is exceeded for extended periods, the capacitor will dry out, change value and then the circuit will fail. 19 Ingress protection ratings (IP) IP & IK RATINGS Defined by IEC The resistive performance of fittings to solids and liquids is indicated by the IP (Ingress Protection) prefix followed by two numbers. The first number indicates the measure of protection against the ingress of solids. NOTE Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects. IPX

20 NOTES : What is the difference between delivered lumens and chip lumens? When manufacturers quote lumen output for LED fixtures, it is not always easy comparing one against the other. This is because many manufacturers still quote the initial chip or source lumens, whereas other quote the actual delivered lumens. So what is the difference? Well basically the initial chip lumens are what comes out of the LED in a raw test state, so not when built into a luminaire. They are a little bit like what lamp lumens are in conventional lamps, such as fluorescent, i.e. what the lamp outputs in a raw state. There is one major difference here though, conventional lamps typically have two major losses applied to them when installed in a light fitting electrical (i.e. ballast losses) and light output, our luminaire losses (i.e. the light that gets trapped in the luminaire and doesn t make it out). LED s have one more major cause of losses heat. The same LED chip placed on two difference heat sinks will result in two different sets of performance due to better or worse heat dissipation. Therefore a better engineered light fitting will typically have much improved performance, even if they both use the exact same LED chip/engine. Delivered lumens are the amount of lumens that make it out of the luminaire after all losses heat, electrical and luminaire. They should be lumens that show in any luminaire photometric file, and are what we always strive to provide on our data sheets at Gerard Lighting. One general rule to follow is if a manufacturer doesn t say if they are delivered lumens, then they probably aren t. So when next comparing lumens to lumens, try and ensure you are comparing apples with apples (or delivered with delivered)! 38 39
