1 STAY COOL THE VINTAGE WAY This summer roll up your windows and enjoy some Cool Classic Cruisin with the help of a Vintage Air air conditioning system. We consider this system to be the best after-market A/C system in the industry. What makes this unit so unique is that you don t need any special tools and the stock heater controls become part of the new system. If the engine is not equipped with a double groove harmonic balancer pulley and double groove water pump pulley, you will need to purchase them ahead of the installation. In this article we will be installing a Vintage Air System on our 1956 convertible. The installation will take you two full days, but it s well worth the time you ll be investing. REMOVAL 1.) As with any project that involves tapping into the electrical system, begin by disconnecting the battery. For this project, also remove the battery and the box from the fi rewall. This provides access to the holes and hoses. 2.) Drain and remove the radiator. Also, remove the heater hoses and clamps. 3.) Remove the glove box door and glove box. Using a 1/4 nut driver, remove the cable hold down on the heater box and cables from the heater control panel. 4.) Remove the heater box assembly by removing the two nuts located on the fi rewall in the engine compartment. Remove the Phillips screw from under the dash on the left end of the heater box. 5.) Remove the passenger side kick panel with the air vent cover. 6.) In the engine compartment, remove the three bolts holding the heater blower motor, and remove it from the interior fi rewall. 7.) Using the 1/4 nut driver remove the cable brackets and vent cable. Then remove the square duct fl ange. 8.) Remove the ashtray and take out the inner bracket that is attached to the dash. Remove the upper cable from the unit with a nut driver. 9.) Remove the passenger side speaker grill and chrome bezel. 10.) Remove the heater control assembly and carefully disconnect the wires from the assembly. Note: there are two hidden screws on the top of the assembly that can only be accessed from under the dash. INSTALLATION 1.) Remove the knobs from the heater control assembly and the chrome bezel. 2.) Unscrew the two Phillips screws on top of the assembly to remove the switch. 3.) Take a small punch and needle nose pliers GENERAL MANAGERS MESSAGE Summer is fi nally here!!! You know what that means, picnics, barbeques and CAR SHOWS. Seth used to own Golden State Pick-up parts and is now dedicating all his time to a couple of really big shows every year. I honestly can t tell you how impressed we all were with these units. We ve been selling them for years and have had nothing but compliments on them, but you still never really understand until you do the job yourself. Take advantage of the savings and beat the heat. 2 AIR CONDITIONING UNIT INSTALLATION ARTICLE and undo the two lower wires to the switch. This would be a good time to replace the control levers and chrome bezel if necessary. 4.) Reinstall the new switch with wiring to the heater control assembly. 5.) Take the chrome bezel and remove the plastic control indicator lens and install the new A/C plastic indicator lens. Make sure you remove the plastic protective cover. 6.) Take the 41 1/8 cable and mount it to the upper control lever using a plastic nylon sleeve if needed. Use the retainer ring to hold it in place. Take the 50 1/2 cable and mount it to the TEMP side of the lever. This will feed through the fi rewall along side the upper heater hose and will connect to the heater valve on the outside of the fi rewall. The 27 1/8 cable will mount to the DEFROSTER side of the lever. 7.) You now need to bench test the A/C box assembly (evaporator) making sure the cables and blowers work before you install it. Follow the instructions carefully. Keep it on the bench for the hose assembly. 8.) Take the heater hoses, original or new, and install them with the clamps. Locate the #10 line with the 90 degree ends on it and install a #10 O-ring with the oil supplied. Install it to the box, but leave it loose. Locate your #6 hard line and install a #6 O-ring with the oil supplied. Leave it on the bench to be installed later. 9.) Install the defroster ducts to the original spot underneath the dash board up near the windshield. 10.) Install the four hole plastic plate to the upper passenger side kick panel. 11.) Take the A/C box assembly and lay it on the fl oor under the dash. Take the hoses and feed them through the fi rewall where the existing blower motor came through. The #6 hard line will come right up the fi rewall. 12.) Push the A/C box assembly up underneath the dash and have a helper feed a 1/4-20 bolt through the fi rewall. Attach the A/C box bracket to the bolt. Finish attaching the rest of the unit. Leave all the lines loose until you get the compressor, dryer, and the condenser mounted. heater control cables to your A/C box. 13.) Hook up the 14.) Install the drain tube at the bottom of the box, exit out the lower OEM heater hole on the fi rewall. Go to the outside fi rewall and install the 90 degree angle tube. Install the rubber plug to the upper hole. 15.) Feed the hoses into the four hole plastic hose cover to about 10 away from the fi rewall. Soap up the hoses if necessary. 16.) Install the passenger and driver kick panel side vents. Attach ducting. Make sure to read the instructions for the tube length. Install the lower center vent. Leave the ducting hanging until you get the wiring all attached. 17.) Install the compressor bracket to the water pump. For this mounting, we had to notch the bracket for the original gas line to fi t back into place. We also made a bigger spacer for the intake manifold to the bracket connection to level the compressor to our generator. Once the bracket is tight, install the compressor with the adjuster attached to the bottom side of it. 18.) Install the double groove pulley on the water pump and new fan if you purchased one. Install the lower pulley to the harmonic balancer. Check for clearances of the fan to the pulleys. Install all the belts at this time. 19.) Reinstall the radiator leaving the bolts loose. Take the condenser brackets and install them into the front part of the radiator core support. With a fan shroud, it is a tight fi t. Install the condenser to the brackets. 20.) Take the provided template and hold it up to the fi ller panel so you can mark the holes that are needed to drill. Once they are marked, drill out the required size holes. 21.) Install the large condenser line on the top and the smaller line on the bottom. Important: You must install the rubber O-rings to the lines with the oil lubricant provided. 2 (800)

3 22.) Push the two hole grommet in the fi ller panel. 23.) Install the dryer with the clamp that mounts to the backside of the fi ller panel. AIR CONDITIONING UNIT INSTALLATION ARTICLE Make sure the FLOW arrow on the dryer is facing the fi rewall. See the instructions that come with the kit. Install the line to the dryer and leave loose. 24.) Take the #6 hard, long line and install an O-ring and install into fi rewall side all the way to the dryer. Leave the lines loose. 25.) Take the new heater valve and hold it up to the upper heater hose to see how far the heater cable comes out. Cut the hose and mount the heater valve with the cable. Now install the other side of the heater hose to the valve and install that hose to your intake manifold outlet. Attach the lower heater hose to the water pump. We used a Danchuk # heater hose bracket to mount the hoses to the fender well. 26.) Remove the plugs off of the compressor line inlets. Install the hard line bracket to the compressor. Mount the #10 hard line and the #8 hard line to the compressor. 27.) Mount the lines to the bracket and leave them loose. Tighten the hard lines to the compressor, then tighten the bracket to the hard lines. Take the loose #10 line, install an O-ring, then install it to the #10 hard line of the compressor. Tighten down. 28.) Take the other #8 rubber line, install an O-ring, then install it to the other hard line on the compressor. Now install that to the hard Danchuk... There s No Comparison line coming off of the condenser through the fi ller panel. Tighten the line. 29.) Go back and make adjustments to the lines and tighten them down. It is diffi cult to get to the lines under the dash, but it can be done. Important: Make sure all the lines are snug but not over tightened. 30.) Take the Tar Tape and wrap the #10 line up underneath the dash on the A/C unit after you have tightened all the lines. 31.) Install the safety switch for the compressor on the #6 hard line, located under the battery box. Finish the rest of the wiring hookup under the dash using the wiring diagram in the kit. 32.) Cut the defroster ducting into two equal lengths. Install it by pushing the ducting onto the upper defroster outlets and under the windshield ducts. Now take the side vent ducting and install it into the big center inlets on the A/C unit. 33.) If you have a speaker behind the speaker grill, you will have to fabricate a new bracket so it will not hit the A/C unit. 34.) Install the new glove box and existing ashtray bracket and ashtray. 35.) Reconnect the battery, fi ll the radiator and take the vehicle to a service station for charg- ing. Important: Make sure the compressor wire is unplugged as it can not be operated until it has been charged. Please note: These instructions work for the 1955 and 1956 applications, but the 1957 model requires minor modifications to the heater control lever installation.
