9 Series 3 E-Type Judges Guide Introduction This JCNA Judges Guide covers the Series 3 V12 E-Type produced from March 1971 to February LHD OTS Vin # s UE1S20001 through UE1S FHC Vin # s UE1S7001 through UE1S71200 VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) numbers are stamped on the Left-hand A-post tag, Lefthand firewall tag and in the body sheet metal under the heater box. This document is designed as a JCNA Judges guide and not the ultimate restoration guide. There are wonderful books such as Jaguar V12 E-Type, A guide To Authenticity by Richard Russ that are more suitable for restoration guidance. As JCNA Judges have only 15 minutes for each area to be judged, intricate details are not covered. This Judges Guide is divided into the four sections that follow the Judges Scoresheet, Interior, exterior, engine and boot. The mechanical section is not covered. Steve Kennedy Judging guides are an important part of JCNA s program to improve the quality and standardization of JCNA Concours judging and the judge s knowledge of various Jaguar models. Judging guides are intended to augment official Jaguar publications by supplying information not readily available or conveniently presented elsewhere. Following AGM approval, a Judging guide becomes the official JCNA document to validate or challenge items, features, materials, patterns, colors, configurations, or accessories found on the model(s) covered. The guides may be used by Entrants, but are MANDATORY for use by JCNA Judges during judging. That being said, the guides are not meant to be a substitute for good judgment. All guides are subject to correction if and when new information becomes known. All researched and documented additions or corrections, forwarded to the author, will be considered for incorporation. The components detailed in the guide correspond to the components judged using the JCNA score sheets. Only USA LHD OTS and FHC will be covered in this judging guide. If a V12E not covered in this guide should be encountered, the Parts books RTC9015 and RTC 9014 should be carefully consulted. Limiting this guide to USA LHD V12 E-types covers 99.5 % of the cars to be judged and greatly simplifies the guide for field use by the judges. 11 Exterior Judge Exterior When the Exterior Judge first approaches the Jaguar to be judged, the car is to be closed and the Exterior Judge is to inspect all body panels for proper fit. Body, Doors & Bonnet (Including Door Jambs, Sills, Shut/Hinge Faces) Body The Series 3 E-Type was produced in two body styles, the Open Two Seater model and the 2+2 Fixed Head Coupe model. Series 3 E-Type Open Two Seater Series 3 E-Type 2+2 Fixed Head Coupe Both the Open Two Seater and the 2+2 fixed head coupe models have chrome trim fitted along the upper door edge. The chrome trim fitted on the door edge of the 2+2 fixed head coupe model extends onto the rear quarter panel. JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 1

12 Exterior Judge Body Panels Note: Keep in mind that although JCNA Judges to very high standards and proper fit of all body panels is to be expected, Jaguars were never produced with such perfection in mind. Jaguars were produced to be driven and not as museum pieces. Fit of the fenders, hood, doors, etc. This includes fit and alignment. Page 2 JCNA Series 3 V-12 E-Type Judge s Guide

13 Exterior Judge Sunroof Sunroofs are not standard on the Series 3 E-Type, however, the factory did subcontract to the Webasto company for sliding cloth tops. Sunroofs fitted to the 2+2 fhc model must be made by the Webasto type. Side View Mirror Side view mirrors are fitted to the drivers side door Only one mirror is fitted as standard on the driver s side of the car. The 1971 model has a stainless steel mirror housing that is flat and does not have a remote control lever inside the door. There are no visible attaching screws. There is a white plastic protector between the base of the chrome arm and the body. The model has a chrome mirror housing that is more rounded and has a remote control lever mounted inside on the door panel. There are two visible Philips head screws securing the mirror support arm to the body. There is a black vinyl grommet protector between the base of the unit and the body. 15 Shut/Hinge Faces Exterior Judge Early cars, 71, 72 & 73 up tp 1S21169, note hardware finish. The posi-drive screws should be silver cadmium, not painted. Door Sills The door sills are vinyl and not painted as on other models and should therefore be inspected by the Interior Judge. Exterior Judge-Do not inspect vinyl door sills on the Series 3 E-Type. 16 Exterior Judge VIN Number Tag VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number) are stamped on the Left-hand A-post tag, center firewall tag, on a sticker on the driver s shut face, on a tag located on the left side of the windshield and in the body sheet metal under the heater box. Inspect to verify that the VIN number is correct for the model of car being judged. Some 2+2 cars have been converted to OTS models. Any car that does not have the correct VIN number for the model should receive deductions for non-authentic or missing parts. LHD OTS Vin # s UE1S20001 through UE1S26200 LHD FHC Vin # s UE1S7001 through UE1S Paint Finish (Including Door Jamb, Sills & Shut/Hinge Faces) The condition, quality, and appearance of the paint itself is to be inspected, not the condition of the metal underneath. Deduct for poor paint or quality of finish Exteriors paint colors should be consistent with the year, make and model The desired finish and texture of the paint shall be as originally manufactured. Restored cars having some, but not excessive, orange peel is acceptable Paint chips that have been touched-up are acceptable Exterior paint color must be a color available at the time of production, although not necessarily that car's original color. 18 Grille and Under Valance Air Scoop Exterior Judge Observe the photos of the air scoop above and note that the upper under valance air scoop has rounded corners while the lower air scoop has squared corners. Both have 3/8 deep plastic chrome trim. Cross-hatched, stainless steel with chrome plated spacers and bright cad brackets. 19 Headlamps Exterior Judge Headlamp Rim Headlamp trim spears, joiner and bonnet beads are all bright chrome Vinyl strip under spears and eyebrows Chrome plated Philips head screw is used at the joiner Headlamp Bucket Body color headlamp buckets Glass headlamp covers are not fitted to any Series 3 E-Type models Front Turn Signal Amber lenses and chrome surrounds Each surround is held in place by a single Philips head screw Front Side Marker Lamp Amber front side marker lenses A single Philips head screw holds the amber lenses, the chrome finishers, and the rubber gasket to the body. Both the turn signal and side marker lenses should be the same amber color, even with natural fading JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 9

20 Exterior Judge Bumpers The bumper are the same for all models from There are two types of over-riders: Short chrome with rubber bump surface ( ) Large square all rubber bumpers (1974) The model has small chrome over-riders and rubber bump guards fitted to the front and rear. The 1973 model has the smaller, early style rear over-riders The 1973 model has front over-riders with chrome bump surfaces and rubber side inserts The 1974 model has large black Nordel rubber over-riders fitted to the front and rear. The rear has extra body colored over-rider supports. Note: All Series 3 E-Types fitted with the large square over-riders should correctly have the duel exhaust pipes. 21 Exterior Judge Front License Plate Assembly USA delivered cars must have the front license plate assembly displayed for judging. When fitted to the car, the front license plate assembly is fastened to the lower right side of the cross-hatched grille. When not attached to the car, the front license plate must be presented near the car models have one bracket at each corner models have two vertical mounting straps at top of bracket. 23 Exterior Judge Tail Lamp Finishers Tail lamp finishers are chrome plated A rubber gasket should be present between the finisher and the body Rear tail lamps incorporate the Stop Lamps, Turn Indicators and Reflectors. These lamps are fitted directly to the body and not a separate assembly like that of the Series 2 E-Types. Rear Side Marker Lamps Red rear side marker lenses A single Philips head screw holds the red lenses, the chrome finishers, and the rubber gasket to the body Left and right side lenses should be the same color red, even with natural fading Reversing/Backup Lamps Two reversing lamps are located below the rear bumper next to over-riders Rear License Plate Bracket Rear license plate bracket is painted black. Tail Pipe Configuration Four Fantail Exhaust Pipes 1971 to February 1973 models have four Fantail chrome plated pipes Fantail pipes have a black out area between the ports Twin Exhaust Pipes Twin exhaust pipes fitted from March 1973 to the February 1975 models Four Fantail Exhaust Pipes March 1971 to March 1973 Dual Exhaust Pipes March 1973 to End of Production Note: The fitment of dual exhaust pipes does not directly correlate with the fitment of the chrome front bumpers with the rubber sides. 24 Exterior Judge beginning in early 1973 and the dual exhaust tips were fitted beginning in March There are 1017 OTS and FHC models that are fitted with the chrome and rubber bumpers and the four fantail exhaust tips. Rear Body Under-Panel Undercoating is non-authentic The body under-panel above the exhaust tips should be painted body color. Page 14 JCNA Series 3 V-12 E-Type Judge s Guide

25 Exterior Judge Glass Any window glass that meets the requirements of the original specifications on form, fit and function (color/tint) is acceptable. Windscreen Glass and Trim Original windshields were manufactured by Triplex, however, JCNA allows for replacement of expendable items with items of equal or greater quality. Triplex imbedded in Glass Note: Glass manufacturer's logos are not judged. Triplex Decal State and manufacturer decals are acceptable The windscreen has chrome trim and a rubber gasket Growler decal is correct Wing decal is incorrect State sticker is acceptable Note: windshield vin number tag in upper right Windscreen Wiper Blades and Wiper Arms Windscreen wiper arms and blades are a brushed stainless steel Windshield rubber is considered a replaceable item JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 15

26 Exterior Judge Door Glass Door glass should be clear or lightly tinted Rear Glass (OTS Model) Rear plastic window in the vinyl top should be clear and not frosted Rear window is heat sealed to the top. No zippers are fitted. Vinyl top has a non-zip, heat-sealed plastic window. 27 Exterior Judge Chrome Work (Including Accessories, Tail Pipes and Resonators) Accessories AMCO Grille Surround Optional oval AMCO is correct for the front bumpers of the models with the smaller bumpers only Bonnet leaper is Non-authentic for all models Luggage Rack AMCO luggage rack, even if it is dealer installed, is non-authentic and must received the appropriate deductions. 28 Exterior Judge Radio Antenna For the 1971 model-year, the antenna is dealer installed. It was usually placed on cowlright or left. For the model-years, the antenna is factory installed. It was installed on the right rear quarter panel. The antenna itself, is stainless steel. The base is chrome and has a black vinyl grommet. Authentic Antenna Aftermarket Non-Authentic antenna Tail Pipes (Exhaust Tips) See Tail Pipe Configuration, page 13. Resonators The Series 3 E-Type does not have resonators like the Series 1 E-Type so there should be no other judging besides inspecting the exhaust tips. Door Handles Chrome with stainless steel lock mechanisms. Windshield Surround Surround and hardware are chrome plated Top, Side Curtains, Tonneau & Boot Cover (Excluding Glass) OTS/DHC Only, No Saloons Top There are two types of tops available for the Series 3 E-Type, the vinyl top and the factory hardtop. 29 Exterior Judge Vinyl Top The top is made of vinyl and not of canvas. All Series 3 E-Types are fitted with black vinyl tops, except for three factory cars that are fitted with blue vinyl tops. Documentation should be presented for proof of being one of the three factory blue vinyl tops. No beige tops were ever factory fitted. Vinyl Top Is Correct Canvas Top Is Non-Authentic OTS Models 71 Velcro Corner Hold-down Black Snaps on Early cars had Velcro next to the door opening. Mid 1972 had black snaps next to the door opening. JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 19

30 Exterior Judge Hardtop No hardtops, either factory optional or aftermarket are acceptable for judging on the Series 3 E- Type. If the hardtop is in place or the soft-top is missing, it should receive the full Non- Authentic deduct. Note: When ordered with the car, the hardtop was painted body color. When purchased from the dealer, the hardtop was painted black Factory Hardtop is Non-Authentic for Judging Side Curtains As the Series 3 E-Type has roll-up windows, side curtains are not fitted. Tonneau & Boot Cover The tonneau cover is made of black vinyl. The soft top is to be displayed erect The tonneau or boot cover should be displayed separately. If it is missing, it should receive the full Non-Authentic deduct soft tops and tonneau covers were available in other colors, generally fawn soft tops and tonneau covers were exclusively black. The underside of the soft tops and tonneau covers is a gray vinyl material. Page 20 JCNA Series 3 V-12 E-Type Judge s Guide

31 Exterior Judge Wheels The Series 3 E-Type was available with either pressed steel wheels or optional wire wheels. Painted Astro Wheels with chrome trim ring and hubcaps Chrome Astro Wheels with hubcaps 72 spoke chrome wire wheels Steel Wheels Standard-Silver painted Astro Disc wheels with chrome trim ring and hub caps Optional-Chrome Astro Disc wheels and hub caps Hub caps have the silver growler on a black background Wire Wheels Optional-Chrome 72 spoke wire wheels Knock Off Hub Nuts All Series 3 E-Types that have wire wheels are fitted with hub nuts and not eared knock-offs, regardless of the original destination country. Three (3) lobed, chrome plated earless knockoff hub nuts The JAGUAR in center, is recessed and painted black The UNDO and the arrow showing direction for removal and the LEFT (NEAR) SIDE and RIGHT (OFF) SIDE do not have black paint. 32 Tires Exterior Judge Original tires were Dunlop ER70/15 Sport Radials with red inspection stamp (Not Redwalls) on the sidewall. V Rated-white wall or black wall. 34 Interior Judge Woodwork, Vinyl & Leather (Except Seats) Woodwork The Series 3 E-Type does not have any factory-installed woodwork This includes a wood steering wheel or wood gear shift knob. Vinyl Interior colored vinyl is located on the following areas: Door sills (Interior Color) The area around the bonnet latches The area on the side and back of the seats, not the seat facings Black colored vinyl is located on the following areas: Dash Console 2+2 FHC header above windshield Page 24 JCNA Series 3 V-12 E-Type Judge s Guide

35 Interior Judge Door Sills The door sills or rocker panels are interior colored vinyl with chrome trim at the outer edge. As the door sill is mostly upholstery covered, it should be judged by the Interior Judge. For the Series 3 E-Type, the door sills are vinyl and not painted as on other models and should therefore be inspected by the Interior Judge. Inspect for wear from heal marks on both the vinyl door sill and the chrome trim. Note: The welting clipped onto the inside vertical edges of the door openings as this must match the leather and vinyl colors. Replacement welting is only available in black and must be colored to matched JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 25

36 Interior Judge Sun Visors The sun visors for the OTS Models are covered in black vinyl. The sun visors for the 2+2 FHC models are covered in the same material as the headliner. Missing sun visors are non-authentic Sun visors with visible stitching are non-authentic OTS Sun Visor The OTS sun visor is smooth black vinyl and is heat sealed at the edge all around. Due to the nature of this vinyl some wrinkles are usually visible and acceptable. 2+2 FHC Sun Visor The 2+2 FHC sun visor is covered with headliner fabric. No visible stitching. 37 Interior Judge Door Panels The color of the armrest is not an identical match to the door panel The door panels are interior color and come in two sections separated by the chrome trim strip. Both sections should match. However, even when new, the color of the armrest was not an identical match to the door panel. The window crank is chrome with round black plastic knobs. The interior door handle is chrome. Armrests The armrests are injection molded colored plastic. The color of the plastic is often not an exact match of the door panels. 38 Interior Judge Headliner/Underside of Top Open Two Seater Model The top headliner top is black vinyl with gray underside and completely heat-seamed except piping along body junction and cross seam at B-post rib The underside of the convertible top and the top bow covers should be painted gray. 57 Boot Judge Tool Kit The Series 3 E-Type comes standard with tire jacking equipment consisting of the jack, jack handle, solid lead hammer and hub nut removal tool for wire wheels or hub cap removal tool and lug wrench. There was an optional tool roll available at the time of production. If the tool roll is displayed, it should be judged. Owner s Manual Note: The owner s manual and any pouch it may come in are often overlooked on models built after 1968 as those models did not come with tool kits. The judge often says to himself, No tool kit, then skip this whole score sheet section. The owner s manual needs to be inspected by the Boot Judge. There are two versions of the owner s manual: The 1971 owner s manual is blue with beige lettering and is stowed in an orange/brown plastic pouch with clear snap cover. The owner s manual is red with yellow lettering and is stowed in a brown plastic pouch with snap cover. Any manuals, other than the owner s manual, should not be judged and the Judge should ask the Entrant to remove them from the inspection area. Do not inspect the manual for content as so would hold these entries to a standard not required by other JCNA Concours Classes. The vinyl pouches are fragile and should not be opened unnecessarily. 63 Engine Judge Engine Compartment Engine numbers are 1001 through The engine number is stamped on the left side rear of the engine on the horizontal surface of the mating flange for the transmission. All engines were 5.3L with the 1971 and 1972 engines using a 9:1 compression ratio and many common ancillaries. The 1973 and 1974 engines used an 8:1 compression ratio and shared almost all ancillaries. The V12 E-type has no polished parts. Many of the aluminum parts were die cast and have a very shinny almost pit free finish. There are three metal finishes employed on the Series 3 E-Type cars: Silver cadmium also referred to as cadmium, clear cadmium or bright cadmium Yellow dichromate also referred to as golden cadmium or yellow cadmium which is an etch applied to a silver cadmium part. Black zinc used on toothed washers, some specialized parts such as the Allen head door striker guide bolts. Yellow dichromate is found on the following: Horizontal fuel rail Horizontal balance tube Emissions return lines to carburetors and the engine breather tub Bolts securing the inlet manifolds, water jackets to the head, nuts securing the oval feet and the nuts securing them used on the air injection rails Bolts securing the rain shields Cylindrical cup on the gulp valve, check valve to the air injection rails Adjusting rods for alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor and air injection pump Most of the large, coarse bolts securing items to the block (engine mounts, alternator/air injection pump mount bracket, power steering pump mount bracket) A/C hose couplings Ubiquitous cerated washers Electrical retaining clamps (metal loops attached to nearby bolts) Bolts securing air rails to inlet manifolds The brilliance of the yellow dichromate is determined by the smoothness of the base metal, the copper underlay (when used) and the quality and thickness of the cadmium plate as well as the quality of the yellow dichromate solution and application. Just as in chrome plating there is a difference in the brilliance determined by the subsurfaces and the quality of the plating. 65 Engine Judge Silver cadmium linkage and mount, yellow dichromate bolt and cerated washer, black zinc latches on linkage (early style) Yellow dichromate tube, braided fuel return line and original style rubber hose connection (brown stripe) The plastic parts are diecast and hence a smooth and brilliant finish. Due to excessive heating, Jaguar did make a modification to the amplifier and moved it from mounting directly over the valley cover to mounting it forward of the upper cross member just under the header tank. Extra cooling fans, carburetors, headers, horns, or other non-factory available items, for the model, are non-authentic. Hoses and hose clamps must match original equipment. The front or rear suspension, shock absorber or brake caliper components are not judged. Surfaces may not be replated other than as original e.g., cadmium cannot be replaced with chrome. The outside diameter is knurled and a fiber washer seals the cap. The mid 1971 and later model oil filler caps were powder coated black with little thumb wings and used a fiber-sealing washer. Note: For early models, the spare key was mounted to firewall and rectangular plastic grommet around wiring harness at firewall. Most models did not have anything mounted to or near this bracket. Watch for Non-Authentic items The charcoal hammertone colored windshield wiper motor is mounted on the right side of the firewall. The wiper motor is mounted on a yellow dichromate over cad bracket with rubber grommets and yellow dichromate over cad securing bolts. Clutch master cylinder - Aluminum housing with yellow dichromate over cadmium hardware Brake master cylinder-yellow dichromate over cadmium with white plastic housing Brake and clutch lines -Lines and fittings are yellow dichromate over cadmium Vacuum system for brake booster -Vacuum tank is semi gloss/gloss black and steel vacuum lines are yellow dichromate over cadmium with white plastic attaching clips. The 1972-on models had slightly simplified piping by having a longer metal pipe, eliminating several very short rubber hoses that connected the two previously short 90 degree metal pipes Right Side Thermostat Housing The right thermostat housing is shiny aluminum and incorporates a brass water temp sender with a red plastic center. The thermostat cover is shiny aluminum and uses 3 posi-drive screws and a cad over yellow dichromate clip for the coolant bleed hoses on the 1971 and 1972 cars. The 1973 and 1974 models use 5/16 hex head bolts and the same bleed hose clip. Whether bolt or posi-drive screws, the finish should be yellow dichromate. Left Side Thermostat Housing The left thermostat housing is the same in all respects as the right housing except for the deletion of the temp sensor for the temp gauge. The 1973 and 1974 model uses a temp sensor and wire harness for the later emission systems. Four lifting hooks are located on the thermostat and waterblock housing attaching bolts models uses cast aluminum hooks and models used stamped steel yellow dichromate over cad plated hooks. The under bonnet air conditioning evaporator fins should be straight and even and be painted semi-gloss black Subframes The firewall, subframes, picture frame, picture frame cross rail, bonnet support and all bolts and nyloc nuts are painted body color The 1973 and 74 models have an aluminum impact pad located on the forward side of the picture frame. - These pads and their hardware are painted body color with the exception of the shock bolt, which was not present during body assembly or painting. In the center of the firewall are six holes used in production jigging that are plugged with translucent plastic plugs. - These plugs in the framerail flanges at the firewall were sometimes but not always coated with tar to prevent water intrusion. - When present the tar appears to be crudely brushed or dabbed on. The monocoque, door hinges and doors, boot lid and hinges, framerail assemblies and bonnet were all assembled, jigged and painted as a unit including the bumper impact apparatus front and rear.. The hose is one piece on very early cars but uses a brass coupler sleeve in the middle years and a plastic sleeve in the later years. The washer nozzle has its tips facing forward, i.e. the crotch of the V faces forward. Washer nozzle is satin stainless with satin chrome nozzles. The power bulge grille is satin chrome with two yellow dichromate over cadmium attaching screws. Bonnet Bead The bonnet bead attaching clips are brass attaching clips that have one leg bent to the inside and one to the outside They are then bent back on themselves with the exception of the rear most clips which are bent in the same way except the tips are cut off JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 67

78 Engine Judge Bonnet Strut The bonnet strut housing is painted semi-gloss black. The steel shaft is a yellow dichromate over cadmium pins and clips and a red rubber tie on the rearward end of the shaft. Aluminum Rain Shields Aluminum rain shields have a smooth lustrous finish The cars used 5/16 attaching bolts The 1973 and 74 cars used ½ attaching bolts on the forward manifolds and EGR nipples on the rear manifolds Heater Box The heater box is painted a semi gloss/gloss black except for the detachable lever on the right side, which should be a brown black. Note correct cadmium bonnet locking hardware but plated pin receiver that should be body color. Screws and attaching heater box hardware should be silver cad. 79 Engine Judge The four bolts securing the heater box to the firewall are yellow dichromate with silver cadmium lock washers. The screws assembling the heater box should be slot, not posi-drive, and should be silver cadmium along with the spacers on the underside and the vertical bracket. The snail screen should be flat, not dished or dented. The attaching bracket at the firewall should include a strengthening rib. The blower motor should have: - A green resister - A Smith s decal is on the heater motor and the underside of the heater box. - A Girling brake fluid decal is to be found on the top of the heater box - The screen is painted black The heater cables are silver cadmium The water valve cable has a marshmallow shaped bumper to prevent chaffing against the air cleaner housing. A rubber grommet is used at the heater cable firewall penetration. The heater water valve is covered with a shiny black plastic cover. Frame rail to heater snail support bracket and hardware yellow cadmium. The heater air inlet is fastened to the wheel arch on the left side of the bonnet. The heater air inlet has a black wrinkle finish A thin round foam rubber seal is fitted to the bottom of the air inlet. There is a round gray or black sealing foam on the underside of the snorkel applied after painting. ID Tag The ID tag is mounted on left firewall with four attaching rivets The ID plate is sometimes slightly off level and sometimes not flush to firewall due to the effects of stamping the numbers before installation Transmission Tunnel The transmission tunnel insulating blanket can be seen on the right side by looking into the transmission tunnel and should be ½ white foam The transmission breather tube is bright cad with black breather cap on left side of transmission tunnel The asbestos firewall heat shields, located under rear of exhaust manifolds, are silver in color secured with aluminum pop rivets JCNA Series 3 E-Type Judge s Guide Page 69

81 Engine Judge Carburetors It must be noted, that except for features unique to position, i.e. RH Rear, externally, all of these carburetors look alike. Four Zenith Stromberg 175 CD, two on each side Carburetors-die cast aluminum Zenith Strombergs with a shiny unpolished finish Black plastic dash pot covers with red fiber sealing washer and have embossed printing identification which is sometimes distorted as cast. 71 domes used a red emission pack sticker has green inspection paint on the cylindrical boss dome has blue inspection paint on the cylindrical boss dome Power Steering Pump The power steering pump is painted semi-gloss/gloss black with a steel reservoir cap 71 and plastic reservoir cap 72, 73 & 74. A Do Not Pry decal is located on rear of reservoir housing and is white with black lettering. Throttle Tower The throttle tower and pivot wheel are silver models use snap on pivot joints models use a sliding collar to engage pivot balls Distributor The distributor is die cast aluminum with a yellow die-chromate over cad retard housing and a black distributor cap with Lucas embossed in the top surface between the wire towers. 82 Ballast Resistor Engine Judge The ballast resistor has an aluminum housing with production date stamped into it. Ignition Control Module The ignition control module is die cast aluminum and is mounted in the center valley. The ignition control module has yellow dichromate over cad attaching bolts with aluminum standoff spacers. The control module harness uses a colored ID band for each wire with four white plastic connectors 1974 modules had a high capacity sticker on the upper fin tips. 83 Engine Judge Exhaust (Manifolds and Down Pipes) Manifolds and Down Pipes The manifolds and down pipes in the engine area are not visible in the Series 3 E-Type. Electrical & Hoses (Generator/Alternator, Wiring, Battery, Tubing & Clamps) Perforated strap wire ties with attaching buttons are used to secure the harnesses to the framerails. Tie locations vary from car to car. Black ties with white buttons are used on all cars except the last few hundred, which used clear ties with black buttons. Wire harnesses are wrapped with black braiding with a green tracer except the rubber wrapped fan shroud harness and a short section under the heater box of rubber wrapped main harness. 85 Engine Judge Battery Lucas and other batteries which were original equipment in Jaguar cars, are considered expendable Replacement battery of any manufacturer must be of like voltage and configuration Size is not judged Battery Box Battery support is semi gloss/gloss black and is riveted screwed and bolted in place Battery tray is sheet metal and has no drain Battery surround is semi gloss/gloss black with two risers for the hold down studs as pictured in the parts book Hold down studs, retaining clips, spring washers and wing nuts are yellow dichromate over cad. The battery has both terminals on the engine side. Battery Cables Positive cable is white with brown boot - The parts book also specifies a red boot but it is doubtful that a red positive boot was ever used The positive cable attaches to a brass lug with plastic insulators and a rubber boot Negative cable is braided with silver cadmium plating and uses a blue negative boot - The parts book also calls for a black negative boot although it is unlikely that this color was used. 87 Engine Judge Ignition Coils Ignition coils are bright spun aluminum with: - Black bakelite plastic tops - Threaded studs - Marked positive and negative Double spades on each connector models had the coils mounted on the forward side of the right cylinder head models, the coils were mounted on the right side adjacent to the ballast resistor. Intake Manifolds The intake manifolds are semi-gloss powder coat finish The 1971 model manifolds used two nipples per manifold with a black T-hose with crimp clamps for the balance tube. Later manifolds used a single nipple with a black hose and crimp clamps. Pulleys The water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley are semi-gloss/gloss black. Motor Mounts The motor mount brackets on both engine and frame are rails semi-gloss/gloss black. 89 Appendices Appendices Appendix A - Carburetors (Thanks to Stew Cleave for the section on carburetors) Carburetors-die cast aluminum Strombergs with a shiny unpolished finish. The carburetor domes are secured with posi-drive screws, used black plastic dash pot covers with red fiber sealing washer and have embossed printing identification which is sometimes distorted as cast. Brass ID tags are located on the left outside dome screw. Dome screws are posi-drive truss head with the early 1971 model carbs using a long shank screw on the right inner with a perpendicular hole at the bottom of the screw. Wound through the screw hole is safety wire with a lead slug and a Z embossed in the slug. (see photo in parts manual). Cylindrical boss on dome has green inspection paint and blue inspection paint domes used a red emission pack sticker. Temp compensator covers are white plastic and secured with bright cad screws. Throttle overrun housings are die cast aluminum with bright cad attaching hardware and a brass vacuum nipple except the 71 which had no external vacuum supply. Throttle shafts are machined brass and use gunmetal blued accordion connectors with yellow dichromate over cad hardware. Four Zenith Stromberg 175 CD-2SE s two on each side LH Front and RH Rear fitted with an enrichment device (choke) operated by a bifurcated cable, Part No C.34854, secured to these carburettors with a black oxide clip, Part No Each dash pot has decal FOR EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS. There is conflicting information regarding the carburetor anti-tamper device; 1) the parts catalogues show a lead disc with one pre-embedded wire used for insertion through a perpendicular hole at the end of a longer dash pot screw shaft, after running through the hole the wire is inserted into a preformed hole in the lead disk and sealed by squishing. 2) The workshop manual shows a small peg (lead plug) that is driven into the Phillips head of the back rear dash pot screw of each carburetor. The workshop manual makes specific reference, after servicing, to, Drive a new lead plug into the cover securing screw. The workshop manual being more specific is deemed to be correct. Brass identification tags with stamped numbers, listed below in bold, should be secured under the head of the front rear dash pot screw of each carburetor; the brass tag is the only external distinction between the Jaguar carburetor part numbers listed below.
