2 President s Signals February 2015 February Birthdays Hello Everyone! OK. Feet wet, January 2015 is in the books! We have hit the ground running. The Board convened at Sandros Trattoria on January 12 th to discuss Club business and the car show. Here are a few things we learned: 1. Membership renewals are running behind and 2. We are behind in our preparations for the car show. So, let s look at each item in turn. 1. Renewals: Your membership dues are the major source of funds for the club. We also use your renewal forms to keep the club roster up to date. I would encourage everyone to get their dues in by March 31 st. 2. Car Show: Bill Matthews is working hard to get us up to speed. We have chairpersons for most of the vital functions, but we are behind on registrations, sponsor awards and show sponsors. I have written a letter that will go to registrants of last year s show encouraging them to come back. We need your help to gather sponsor awards and show sponsors. We also need items for the silent auction! This activity has been a great success in the past and has raised $6,266 over the last three years for our charity. Please get involved. At the January meeting Bill Folse gave a presentation on his successful quest for the last major award available for his C4 ZR1. He had some beautiful pictures of the competition in Chicago lots of early 70s muscle cars! His car will be retired from the show circuit and Bill s focus will be his Callaway Twin Turbo! Sign the attendance book at all club functions and send pictures of your attendance at other functions representing CCCC and we will see who wins! On January 18 th the Confederation of Corvette Clubs of Louisiana held their annual meeting at T.J. Ribs, in Baton Rouge. Attendees included Representatives from Bayou State CC, Baton Rouge CC, North Shore CC Greater New Orleans CC, NCRS and Crescent City CC. After sharing a meal we discussed the 2015 Confederation Calendar. It looks like another year filled with exciting events! If you know of an activity that you think our members might enjoy, send us an with the details and we will work to get the event scheduled. Understand that we will need help from members to help plan and execute activities. We ask all club members that you do all that you can to support this club. When you are asked for your help, please volunteer. We need everyone s participation to keep this club the quality organization that it has always been! Remember, this is your Corvette family! 3 National Corvette Museum Ivan and Mary Schrodt Donate Five Corvettes ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest With a mutual love for cool cars, Ivan and Mary Schrodt were meant to be together from the beginning. When they got married, Mary was driving a 68 Camaro and Ivan had a sporty Datsun. For years they went on to enjoy several different sports cars, but not a Corvette. We had just donated our Toyota MR2 to a charity benefiting troubled youth, Ivan recalls, so we were without a fun car and looking for something new. We were thinking that maybe a convertible would be good this time as it had been awhile since we had one of those. One day Ivan got a call from Mary while he was at the office. She never called work unless there was a reason, but this time she talked about different things until finally I had a meeting to go to and had to ask, Hun, what did you call for? That s when she told him she d made an offer on a 1996 Polo Green Convertible Corvette. That was our first Corvette. Mary loved that car and it is one of the ones we donated to the Museum. He breaks into a warm smile as memories come to mind. It s a lovely car. Mary s decision to get a Corvette would change the trajectory of their lives and bring them together with new friends, new experiences, and the National Corvette Museum. We almost immediately joined Valley Vettes Corvette Club out of Appleton, Wisconsin a great group of folks that we are still a part of today. Shortly after that we attended a C5 Bash and became members of the National Corvette Museum. The Schrodts would stop by whenever they passed through Bowling Green. As they got to know everyone, they began to appreciate the staff and their commitment to the Corvette hobby enough to want to do more. They became Lifetime Members, and Duntov Society Members as well, making the Museum a part of their estate planning. In my early involvement, I was invited to join the Board. When I came on we didn t have the expansion, or even the land for the track. It was a wonderful time to be involved with transforming the Museum into something more. Before it was a Museum with a lot of nice cars to look at, but it became a place to come and interact with the Corvette Museum Family and other enthusiasts. With the Café, Page 3

4 meeting rooms, conference center, exhibit hall, and the bigger store, it makes being here a much bigger experience. Being able to participate in that transformation of the Museum felt so good. On December 18th, 2014, they did something else to help grow the Museum. Along with the 1996 Corvette that started it all, they also donated four other Corvettes including a 1966 Rally Red 327 Convertible. When people find out that you have more than one Corvette, they often wonder why that is. My answer is that they are all so different. They handle differently, they look different, their history is different and the way they evolved makes them all special. For example, a lot of people agree that the midyear is the best looking Corvette ever, and for me it is one of the best looking cars ever made. That is probably the reason we got the 66. We took that car out in a lot of parades and made many Sunday trips in it to Culvers for ice cream. The next donation they made to the Museum collection was a 1980 Dark Blue Metallic Coupe. By the time we got this car we already had some other Corvettes and thought it would be fun to have a classic C3 to enjoy. I remember one time we drove through a Chevy dealership lot, and passed a family looking for a new car to buy. The daughter saw us and pulled on her dad s arm saying, Daddy, daddy, look at that one! Look at that one! I think we ruined the new car shopping experience for him as there weren t any 1980 Corvettes sitting there for sale in the lot. Ivan chuckles. Fun car. The 2002 Millennium Yellow Z06 Coupe they also donated was a Museum Delivery car. When we got that one we decided then to put our cars in a trust for the Museum. It s an incredible car. It s one of the best touring cars I ve ever had in my life. It is big enough to pack up for a long trip, and handles superbly on a track. I modified it to make it a dedicated track car with new seats and a five point racing harness. That one and the 2007 black Z06 both love going on a track at speed. When they came to the 2014 Labor Day Celebration and got on the NCM Motorsports Park track for the first time, they decided to change their donation plans. I got to thinking that instead of waiting years before making the donation, we ve got two cars that could be put to good use now by the National Corvette Museum on this track. The cars would be where they belong. While a lot of people donate their cars to be preserved, and rightfully so for their history, those two cars were donated to be used up. He says with a mischievous grin. We hope they get a lot of track miles and give a lot of track smiles. Thank you, Ivan and Mary, for all you have done for the Museum and the Corvette community. We are all so glad that Mary bought that first Corvette, and that it brought both of you into our lives. 6 On The Road To Triple Crown ZR-1 Corvette This past November, Mike Leeds and I made the journey to Chicago with the 91 ZR-1 #1991 in search of the MCACN Triple Diamond Award. We are happy to report that the trip was a big success for the ZR-1! And, as we anticipated and hoped, it turned out to be an awesome journey back in time to the era of the muscle cars of our youth. As it turns out, the MCACN (Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals) is probably the Big Daddy of all car shows. 600 plus primo examples of U.S. Muscle. Legendary race cars, street cruisers, showroom stock, all pristine pavement pounders. Just about every make and model muscle car you can remember at the red lights or in the magazines. The cars were obviously hand-picked and. Each one of them was a museum quality example, some of which were being unveiled in public for the very first time. The ZR-1 was in a special group for judging by the Triple Diamond judges. Triple Diamond candidates must have met the prerequisite of achieving NCRS Top Flight and Bloomington Gold in order to be eligible for Triple Diamond judging. On surveying the show, the ZR-1 was only 1 or 3 C4 Corvettes even in the building, and the only C4 Corvette submitted for judging. All other Corvettes in the group were mid-years, mostly fitted with big blocks, except for one 1969 L-88 next to the ZR-1. The judging teams moved about very quietly and efficiently, completing the judging for each Corvette in about 45 minutes. I was excited to learn that the ZR-1 scored 995 points on a 1000 point scale. In the front of the arena, there were several displays that included Corvettes. Most notably, there was a display of Corvette racing heritage that included L-88 and ZO6 Corvettes that competed around the world. Of course, the Invisible L-88 was on display as well!! I highly recommend attending this event. Located in the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, it is right across the I-294 from Chicago O Hare Airport and within walking distance of numerous excellent hotels and restaurants. Proper installation requires that the wheel lug torque be set to the recommended specification for your vehicle. These torque specifications can be found in your vehicle's owner's manual, shop repair manual or obtained from your vehicle dealer. Wheel lug torque specifications are for clean threads that are free of dirt, grit, etc. Do not apply anti-seize compound to the lug hardware or studs. That can result in inaccurate torque readings and/or over torquing of the hardware. Once lugs are snugged down by hand, finish tightening them with an accurate torque wrench. Use the appropriate crisscross sequence (shown below) for the number of wheel lugs on your vehicle until all have reached their proper torque value. Be careful because if you over-torque a wheel, you can strip a lug nut or hub, stretch or break a stud or bolt, and cause the wheel, brake rotor and/or brake drum to distort. Page 9

10 Use the dry wheel lug torque values specified in the vehicle's owner's manual, shop manual or obtained from the vehicle dealer/service provider. When installing new wheels you should re-torque the wheel lugs after driving the first 50 to 100 miles in case the clamping loads have changed following the initial installation. This is necessary due to the possibility of metal compression/elongation or thermal stresses affecting the wheels as they are breaking in, as well as to verify the accuracy of the original installation. When rechecking torque value, wait for the wheels to cool to ambient temperature (never torque a hot wheel). Loosen and retighten to value, in sequence. Simply repeat the same torque procedure listed above.
