2 MEDIA BRIEFING NOTES Semi-Annual 2009 Crime Volume The crime index volume presented in Florida s 2009 Semi-Annual Crime in Florida report of preliminary data (400,067) depicts a decrease of 7.9% from the index crime volume reported for the same time period in 2008 (434,563). Violent crime accounted for 14.3% of the total index crimes reported. These crimes consist of murder, forcible sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault. Violent crimes decreased this year by 9.7%. Non-violent crimes, consisting of burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft, decreased 7.6%. Arrests There were a total of 537,824 arrests made during this reporting period; 56,930 juveniles and 480,894 adults. Compared to arrests for this same time period last year, total arrests decreased by 6%. There were a total of 56,930 juvenile arrests made during this reporting period; 41,573 male and 15,357 females. This represents a decrease of 7.9% when compared to juvenile arrests for the same time period last year. Domestic Violence A total of 58,064 domestic offenses were reported during this time period. This is a 5.2% increase from the 55,211 domestic violence related offenses reported for the same time period last year. Murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, forcible sodomy, forcible fondling, aggravated stalking, simple assault, threat/intimidation and simple stalking offenses all showed an increase over last year. Aggravated assault was the only offense to show an decrease. Cohabitants continue to be the largest group of victims of domestic violence related offenses, with spouses remaining as the second largest group. A total of 17,023 cohabitants and 12,529 spouses were reported as victims of domestic violence this reporting period. There were 33,525 domestic violence arrests for the 2009 semi-annual reporting period compared to 32,805 domestic violence arrests for the same reporting period in This represents a 2.2% increase. The arrest category of aggravated assault and simple assault continue to reflect the largest volumes. A total of 6,690 (20%) were arrested for aggravated assault and 25,811 (77%) were arrested for simple assault. Persons arrested for aggravated assault and simple assault (32,501) accounted for 96.9% of the domestic related arrests for this reporting period. Property The value of property stolen for the 2009 semi-annual period decreased by 11.3%, from $875,910,269 in the 2008 semi-annual to $776,807,402. The value of property recovered for the 2009 semi-annual period decreased by 19.7%, from $218,584,813 in the 2008 semi-annual report to $175,464,631.

4 IN MEMORIAM 2009 IN MEMORIAM LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS DEATH REPORT 2009 Semi-Annual CRIMINAL CAUSES Deputy Sheriff Warren York Okaloosa County Sheriff s Office Deputy York was shot and killed on Saturday, April 25, 2009 when he and another deputy were attempting to arrest a man following a domestic assault. Deputy York was shot by the suspect as he attempted to apprehend him. The suspect fled and was later shot and killed by Walton County Sheriff s Deputies after he opened fire on them. Deputy York was 44 years old and had been with the Okaloosa County Sheriff s Office for 2 years. He is survived by his wife and children. Deputy Sheriff Burton Lopez Okaloosa County Sheriff s Office Deputy Lopez was shot and killed on Saturday, April 25, 2009 when he and another deputy were attempting to arrest a man following a domestic assault. Gunshots were exchanged and Deputy Lopez was mortally wounded. The suspect fled and was later shot and killed by Walton County Sheriff s Deputies after he opened fire on them. Deputy Lopez was 44 years old and had been with the Okaloosa County Sheriff s Office for 6 years. He is survived by his wife and children. Accidental Deaths Officer Giovanni Gonzalez Miami-Dade Police Department Officer Gonzalez was killed when his patrol car collided with a dump truck on the Florida Turnpike. He was 23 years old. Captain Scott Bierwiler Hernando Count Sheriff s Office Captain Bierwiler was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by a teenage driver. Criminal charges against the driver are pending. Captain Bierwilder was 42 years old and had been with the Sheriff s Office for 23 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.
