1 Police Department MONTHLY REPORT August 2016 Professionalism Integrity Respect Compassion Inside This Issue Department Highlights 1 Community Policing 2 Detective 3 At-a-Glance Statistics Statistics 4-9
2 1 Police DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS August 2016 Pelotonia 2016 The weekend of August 6 th and 7 th the City of New Albany hosted a starting point, two finish lines and rest stops for the 2016 Pelotonia. New Albany Officers were stationed throughout the route to ensure the safety of the estimated 2,500 cyclists who traveled through and to the city as part of the ride for charity. No issues or problems were reported and cyclist and motorist demonstrated patience as they shared the road. RAD Classes The police department held a Rape Aggression Deterrence (RAD) class. The class was held in August to provide young women who are headed to college with knowledge and tactics they can use defend themselves from a physical attack. The class was open to all women and included a class room portion along with practical exercises. Officer Leland Kelly, a certified RAD instructor, taught the class and was assisted by Officer Jill Will. Officer and 911 Dispatcher Training Officers Lukas Burr, Nate Ferguson, Adam Klingler and Greg Thomas are in the midst of their field training. The fifteen week field training occurs after new officers graduate from police academy. When an officer is hired who has prior police experience and has already attended a police academy, the field training begins immediately. All four officers have undergraduate degrees, one is a US Marine veteran, and two have prior law enforcement experience. They are performing well and are anticipated to complete their field training in early October. At that time they will begin working various patrol shifts. Dispatchers Teasa Wollenburg and Heather Cole completed their 18 week 911 dispatcher training. The training focuses on 911 emergency calls and relaying the information to first responders. The new dispatchers must also learn how utilize a multitude of resources, communicate with officers on patrol, assist walk-in customers and address non-emergency calls. They will complete their training in September.
3 2 Police DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS August 2016 Active Threat Response The police department conducts training within the schools annually. In addition to the value of the training, officers tour the school buildings to become more familiar with the campus in the event they need to respond to an emergency. The training in August included force-on-force training with the use of Simunitions. The use of Simunitions allows officers to use guns that are nearly identical to their duty weapons with training ammunition in a variety of realistic scenarios. Touch-a-Truck The police department was glad to participate in the New Albany Service Department s annual Touch-a- Truck event. In addition to displaying a police cruiser the police department provided child IDs to the families in attendance. Compliments of the Department Officers Strahler and Catanese received a letter from an individual that they had arrested. The person apologized for not cooperating and misleading the officers. Officer Hamilton received a nice note thanking him for the time and advise he gave to a college student who is interested in a career in law enforcement. Officer Jill Will received a compliment for the kindness and consideration she demonstrated toward the family whose dog had been hit and killed in an accident. The family recently welcomed a new puppy to their family and they brought the puppy to the police station to meet Officer Will. Office Jillyan Will with the new puppy
