3 General Information The club is a not-for-profit Kansas corporation, dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of all Chevelles and El Caminos. Ownership of a Chevelle or associated vehicle is not required. Club newsletters which include minutes of meetings, upcoming events, and technical articles are also found on club s website and are forwarded to members. Business meetings are convened on the last Thursday of each month, with the possible exceptions of November and December, for the purpose of discussing and planning future club events. The meetings begin at 7:00 p.m., at Hendrick Chevrolet, 8300 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam, Kansas unless otherwise noted in the newsletter or on the club s website. Members may advertise vehicles/parts for sale, trade, or wanted in the newsletter for no charge. 4 March 2013 Meeting Minutes March 28, 2013 The meeting was called to order by Chair Roger Verstraete at 7:00 p.m. at Hendrick Chevrolet. A guest from Iola, KS (owner of a 1970 red Chevelle) was introduced and members in turn introduced themselves. The minutes was presented in the newsletter were approved. The members present were informed the new website is up and going. Dean Call is the coordinator for website items. Members were also informed the car show fliers are ready to go and the show events were briefly discussed. Upcoming events include: April 12: Wellsville Car Show; April 27: 10:30 to noon, museum tour at the Johnson County museum at 87th and Lackman; April 27: car show at Edgerton, KS. In addition upcoming events were briefly highlighted: Johnny Rays, the DAV Show in Topeka and the May 19 picnic at Lake Lenexa. A proposed budget was distributed. The Treasurer s report was accepted as presented. The members were also informed there at 69 current members. The members were reminded of the annual election of officers scheduled for April. Those present were also reminded membership renewals are due by April 30, There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:47 p.m. A cruise to Old Shawnee Pizza followed. Westglen Shopping Center at I-435 and Midland Dr, Shawnee, Kansas. April Events Wellsville Car Show We kicked off the year with a trip to Wellsville for their annual car show. This event has been moved from its usual Fall date to the Spring. We had great weather, a bit cool, but clear with no rain. Left: Allen and Robin Call s 1968 made its first ever car show appearance. 6 President s Column Hello MACC Members, MACC April 2013 Newsletter I know the weather that we ve had has gotten us all down a bit. We all want to get out and drive our cars and go to a cruise or car show. The weather will soon break and then all of us will get our chance to show off our rides once again. Our big club event for the spring is just around the corner. On May 19th, our second annual spring picnic will be held at the Black Hoof Park at Lake Lenexa, 9053 Monticello Road. Before the picnic we will start off again at Dan Yuran s garage in Bonner Springs. For those of you that have never been or just want go again to Dan's garage, it is a must see for any Chevelle fan. You will see all stages of restoration, from a rusty old Chevelle that looks like it is hiding from a car crusher, to one that looks like it just came off the showroom floor from the 60's and 70's. You will get to see more parts, engines, transmissions, and rear ends that you can imagine one garage can hold. You will see some everyday regular SS396 to some of the rarest Chevelles that were ever built. It is hard to believe that a rusty old piece of metal sitting on four flat tires can turn into something that is better today than it was when it was built. Dan and Harold are true artists as they can put these cars back together better than they were built. If you don't know where Dan's garage is or can't remember how to get there, we are going to meet at the West Glen Shopping Center between 12:30 and 1:00. The address is Midland Drive Shawnee Kansas (I- 435&Midland Drive). We will meet behind the Westglen 18 Theaters. This is the same location that we are going to have the Mid America Chevelle Car Show at this year. We will leave at 1 o'clock to go to Dan's garage. After leaving Dan s garage, we will head over to the Oak Shelter House at 9053 Monticello Road in Lenexa, Kansas. This is the same location we had our picnic last year. This is a brand new shelter house that will hold up to 200 people, with walking trails that go around the lake, playgrounds for the kids, and a large cooking area for the chefs to prepare the food. The club will be supplying the hamburgers, brats, and condiments for the picnic. We are asking everyone to bring a side dish and their own drinks. We are planning this to be a family event for all, so please feel free to bring your children or grandchildren to this event. This is a very secluded area around the lake, and one of the nicest shelter houses and park areas I have ever seen. We have reserved the shelter house from 3 pm to 9 pm. There is no alcohol allowed at this shelter house. If you can't make it to all of the events or just want to come to the picnic and eat, that is fine too. We are planning on eating around five o'clock. I will need a head count on how many people are coming and what type of side dish you are bringing. Items needed are: salads, chips, beans, desserts, or any family secret recipes that you might like to bring. I will be sending out an Evite to everyone in the club around May 1st to remind you about the picnic. I know we all know someone that is a friend or acquaintance that has a Chevelle. What a great opportunity this is to bring them to one of our club events! This gives them a chance to meet the great members of MACC and a chance for us to meet them. Last year Steve Boone brought a friend to the picnic and he was telling the story of his car, and I'm quoting here "I have a 1969 Yenko Chevelle that I bought new". That is one of the rarest if not the rarest Chevelle ever built. You may have seen it at last year s car show. That just goes to show you how many Chevelle owners that are out there with other rare or nice Chevelle's. Our club wants and needs new members every year, and this is a one good way to do this. Again, if you know someone please invite them to the picnic. On a personal note, I have retired as of the first of April. I have been a Union Sheet Metal Worker for almost 44 years. The last 10 years I have been an instructor at the Sheet Metal Apprentice Center in Raytown, Missouri. I have been very lucky in the trade being able to work as long as I have, and having the opportunity 4

7 to work with some of the most talented young men and women coming into the sheet metal trade today. Over the last 10 years we have had 5 national contest winners here in Kansas City in the sheet metal trade. I always said they kept me young at heart and on my toes every day that I was there. I have worked for some of the best contractors in the world and for that I am extremely thankful. I will miss the everyday challenges and camaraderie of my students. This was a very hard decision for me to make because all I have ever done my whole life was work. I was raised on a truck farm and worked there until I was 18. After I graduated high school I got right into the sheet metal apprenticeship. Two years later, Janet and I got married and raised three great kids. The sheet metal trade provided me with a good living, health care and a pension. That is rare in today s world to say that. I'm still going to work one day a week to fill in and work on some special projects for the apprentice program. I might have to just buy another Chevelle to work on to fill my spare time. Roger VP s Corner Vp's Corner With Ed Smoot Decisions, Decisions. We are all faced with them everyday. What to wear, what to have for dinner, or whether to cruise through that yellow traffic signal. Some decisions are mundane, while others may shape your life for the foreseeable future. I've been working through some decisions lately- here are just a couple: College. My oldest son is set to graduate high school in a couple of weeks. (fingers crossed!) We have been helping him make some big decisions in the last few months that are sure to shape his journey into adulthood. As a parent of a high school senior, months back the mailbox at the house started getting full. Offers from colleges both locally and far away started to find their way into our home. It was kind of funny, at first, reading through the different propaganda that was designed to entice a young person into thinking that your school was for them. One case in point was from a school in Colorado. The focus of their very colorful flier was not so much academics- which most parents are concerned with- but more about the scenery. They must have mentioned a half a dozen times how beautiful the view was there, and how picturesque the campus was. Needless to say, out-of-state tuition to what could be compared to a state park was out of the question. After many visits to different campuses, we finally settled on what we felt was a good fit. A smaller school, with more personal attention, a great academic program- and in state! Close enough to home that Brad can come home every weekend if he wants, which will make his mother and I happy. For those interested in what school he chose, you'll have to wait and see what ball cap I wear this fall. One big decision for a guy that has his car torn down to it's basic elements: What direction should I take with my Chevelle? At this point, it's all up in the air. Not only do you have the small block/ big block debate, but with all the new LS engines and fuel injection available, it's a toss-up. And what direction to finish the car in? A few options: Full resto? Doubtful. I can sure appreciate the workmanship and time that goes into a near-perfect representation of what the General churned out way back when. It's always nice to look at a car that is correct, and compare it to something that you are working on. Seeing just how the brackets were meant to be, how the gauge cluster wires up, or where the paint lines stop can sure be a help when you are putting an old ride back together. But for my patience level, I don't think I would ever make it. 5

8 Pro-touring? Possibly. Cruising on the highway or around town with some modern suspension and brakes with all the creature comforts of a newer car sure sounds good. Hitting the boulevard on a 100 degree day with the A/C blowing what little hair I have left may just be the ticket. Full race? Probably not. I can still occasionally talk my wife into going for a ride with me- and that would surely be out the window if she had to crawl over a roll cage to enter and exit. While I love the smell of exhaust in the morning- her, not so much. Maybe the best decision of all is not to decide at all! Why not build one of each? To accomplish such a task, I'll only need to live to be a hundred and twenty, and have Bill Gates' bankroll to go with it. My wife is a very understanding person, but it may take me the first 100 of those years to get her to warm up to the idea. And lastly, one more set of decisions. At this month's meeting, we will be electing club officers. If you would like to help decide who steers the ship, now's your chance. We're always open to suggestions, so let your voice be heard!
