Now that is some up-beat math!!! No matter, as the heat was a big deal after about 2 pm which most likely nixed this event for many members. Ken Cates won a car emergency kit and I won a 12 volt battery tender!!! Anyone want to trade for the tender let me know as all my old cars are still 6 volts and rarely do I need to tender a 12 volt battery!!! Tee shirts were part of the registration and dash plaque. Food was on site and very cheap. They must have had 50 trophies to give out but since Ken and my Hudsons are drivers and not really show cars we just sat by our cars while they were dispersed. We are still thinking about Dick s garage for a future meet, with no decision made as to this. No one really knows the future of this collection and as things tend to go it might get broken up like the one this summer back east? Speaking of which it appears 4 cars were purchased by Texans from the rumors I have be privy to. Calvin purchased a very nice 29 I believe with great paint color. I would guess it really looks good next to his other Hudsons due to the well done color!!! Mark Homer purchased two cars, A 1952 Twin H Hornet pick-up and a 1954 Super Jet for the wife. Both cars are in a shop to do what needs to be done to get them road ready after haven sat for years in a garage. I believe Mr. Homer will join our Chapter as member #25 and it looks that he intends to drive them and have some fun. Summer is starting to come to a close and looking forward to cooler weather for meetings ahead. We all need to drive our cars to keep them in shape. 2 Karem Shriner Car Show Speegleville, Texas P A G E 2 (Rodney s Notes, Continued from page 1) My drive from Austin to Waco had the engine sputtering a few times Due to bad gas but after topping off the tank and putting a few mile down it never missed again even on the way home in 100 o F plus, heat.. Just sitting for a few months it appears my gas had gone bad? The engine did better than the driver due to the excessive heat. By the time I got home I was whipped and red faced!!! Welcome new member Andrew Connolly, Seabrook TX (See a picture of his car on page 8) Treasury $4, Saturday dawned and Yolanda were out of bed at 6 am preparing for a day of fun at the local Heart of Texas Karem Shrine Classic Car show. After breakfast we drove the short 10 miles to the wooded campground where the show was held. I was surprised to find that over 70 cars were already in place at 8:30 AM. Later in the day we determined that over 250 cars were entered in the show and that some folks had traveled from West, North East and South Texas areas as much as 175 miles to attend. Rodney, made the trip from south Austin taking just over 2 hours to make the journey. As he said in his monthly letter, we three chapter members spent most of the day talking with many of the attendees who came to see our two 54 Hudsons. Lots of talk from folks whose parents were HET owners and interestingly we had several long conversations with 30 something men and women who were interested in the marquee as well as how to find a car of their own. Refreshing to know that there is interest in being owners even though there is no other connection than appreciation of the cars design. Our location was shaded throughout the day and until around 2 PM we were cooled by a breeze. The loss of the breeze and the higher 100+ F temperature caused the sponsors to end the show early. We missed those who did not attend, but we are happy we attended. We will probably go back next year to attend. 4 MYSTERY SOUTH TEXAS CHAPTER MEMBER P A G E 4 WHO Is the man with the SOUTH TEXAS TEE SHIRT? The picture was found on the INTERNET while searching for HET related information. The picture was marked as part of the 2002 HET NATIONAL MEET. That meet was in RENO NEVADA and Paddlewheel boat trips were part of the events at that meet. I have my guess, but I do not remember ever having seen those tee shirts in the past.

6 P A G E 6 TECH TIPS Adapting a modern rear axle to a Hudson (for highway cruising) The following information was provided by Gus Souza to Jon Battle and reprinted here No warranty as to the outcome of your use of the information is inferred or given There are several ways to get more speed out of a 1947-and-earlier Hudson, when using the original engine and transmission. The best, most authentic and easiest is to install the optional Hudson overdrive transmission, available for the 1940 through 1947 model years. However, if you have a Hudson and want to be able to cruise all day at mph, all is not lost! One of the easiest methods is to transplant a complete rear axle from a more modern Brand-X automobile, one that has a more advantageous (high-speed) rear end ratio than your Hudson's. The trick is to find one that approximates the wheel track of your Hudson and one that will mate easily with the Hudson driveshaft. Although there are several such interchanges from 1970's and 80's cars, one of the more traditional fits (for Hudson enthusiasts) is the 8-3/4 rear end which Chrysler used during the 1960's and 70's B cars. While cars of this era are now antiques themselves (and parts are not as plentiful and cheap as they used to be), it's still a good choice for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time researching and adapting an even more-modern rear axle to his Hudson. Gus Souza, a well-known Hudson enthusiast from the Chicago area who has been working on Hudsons since the early 1940's, has some information about the Chrysler 8-3/4 rear end which may be of interest to those considering adapting one to their '47 or earlier Hudson. The ones that most closely match the Hudson (1936 to 1947) in terms of track (the distance across the car, from the middle of one rear tire to the other), were used on Plymouth Satellites, which had Chrysler B bodies may be the best year to choose, but be warned that there were three different tracks used in those days; so look up your own car's track dimension before you start shopping for the Plymouth rear axle. Actually, you can use the 8-3/4 in your '34 or '35 Hudson (or Terraplane, of course), but be advised that those earlier Hudson products had 4-bolt wheels, while the Satellite (along with later Hudsons) has 5 bolts. All the parts are still reasonably priced and are available for these 8-3/4" carriers. Also, be aware (when shopping for the Plymouth rear axles) that they were available in a number of ratios. You will have to decide what one you want (keeping in mind how powerful your Hudson is, and what sort of hills you have to climb!) Once you obtain the rear axle, of course, any Plymouth 8-3/4 rear end will fit into it. Here's a link to a website that gives a lot of good technical info on the 8-3/4" axles, and it shows which years have which track widths: The rear brakes on the Chrysler 8-3/4" axle measure 10" x 2-1/2" and have an automatic adjuster. Gus says that the adjuster is expensive to replace and wasn't that good in the first place! So if you want to go back to the original Hudson style of brakes, merely drill a hole in the bottom of the Plymouth shoes (in the same place you'd find it on your original Hudson shoes) and then you can fit them with the mechanical adjuster and spring from the Hornet shoes and disregard the automatic adjuster. 7 P A G E 7 TECH TIPS (Continued from page 5) The studs on the left side (brake drum) of the Plymouth are left-hand thread. If you want to make them right-hand threads (to match the studs on the opposite side of the car) buy a DOR Dorman stud. The mating lug nuts are Dor The 8-3/4" axle is a little bigger than the Hudson's so you will need the bigger "U" bolts and shock plates from the Plymouth -- Gus thinks they are the same as you'd find on the '52 to '54 Hudson Hydramatic Spicer rear end. You must remove the saddle plates from the Hudson housing and weld them onto the Plymouth axle housing. Be sure they are welded to the Plymouth housing at the same angle as on the Hudson axle housing, and at the same location. (If you don't want to cut them off the Hudson housing you can use 3/8" x 2" steel plate instead, but be sure you cut it to the same length as the Hudson one, and put in the little brace that was on the Hudson. ) You will use the old Hudson driveshaft, but you must shorten it by 5/8". Then, you must get a special U-joint which fits both the rear yoke of the Hudson drive shaft, and the mating yoke on the Satellite. This is part # UJ (CARQUEST). The emergency brake cables can be reworked to fit. You can also buy 2 of the right hand cables (the short side) for the Plymouth and make a splice with the Hudson cables. For information on these (8-3/4") rear ends call Larry at Mopar City, He is an expert, plus Gus says he owns two junkyards in Arizona and DeKalb, Illinois (which presumably are well stocked with 8-3/4 rear ends). By the way, the Hudson / Terraplanes can be easily converted from mechanical to juice brakes; Gus says they you can simply bolt the backing plates from a hydraulic brake-equipped Hudson (built up to 1947) right onto your

After lunch drive to the Texas Ranger Hall of fame museum ( and then wrap up the day with a visit to the Doctor Pepper Museum ( drpeppermuseum.com) Soda Shop both of these attractions are within two miles of the cafe. This message is an attempt to bring all of our members attention to a fundamental aspect of our chapter and its existence as a part of the National HET club. To be a member of our South Texas Chapter of the HET Club you must be a member in good standing with the National HET Club. That means at the time of paying your South Texas dues you must have paid your dues to the national club.
