Heart of America Corvair Owners Association Editors Gary and Helen Moore January2017 Kansas City Area 50 established 1964 Volume 53-1 Next Meeting: Tuesday January 10, 7:30 to 9pm Paul and Jacks Tavern 1808 Clay Street, North Kansas City, MO Social Hour: 6:30 to 7: In Review Notable events of the year began with the return of Mike Dawson as HACOA President after 23 years. Our annual charity auction raised a record $1,625, which we split between Minddrive and the Corvair Preservation Society. We also updated our bylaws and recognized the Wagners for their contributions to CORSA Concours with a model car diorama made by Bill Bennett. Members Jack Hill and Jack Richardson celebrated their 90th birthdays in [This would be a good place to insert a reminder to congratulate the Hills, who will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary in August 2017 and the Richardsons, who will celebrate their 70th in September.] At the beginning of 2016 our roster listed 65 memberships, family and/or single. While that s down a bit from previous years, we did add some new members including Howard Gillogly, Mark and MariLyn Killion, John and Martha Martin, Jim and Kay Conway, and Bill Kiely. It always amazes other clubs that we have 40 to 50 members at most of our meetings so it was a surprise to us that there were only 26 people at the July meeting. The fact that it was held a week earlier than usual due to the convention and it was only 110 degrees out that day might explain it. An attendance high of 53 was, believe it or not, set at the February meeting. [This would be a good place to insert a renewal reminder. Dues are still $15; please fill out new membership form especially if your contact info has changed.] Continued on page 4 By Gary & Helen Moore Inside 2016 In Review Page 1,4 & 5 Social Calendar Page 2 Preventative Maintenance Series: Leaks at Differential Side Sleeves Page 3 Convention Corner Page 7 President's Corner Page 7

The Preventive Maintenance Series Leaks at Differential Side Sleeves January 2017 By Mike Dawson Corvair differentials have a potential leak at either the side seal that the stub axle runs in or from the large O-ring that seals the adjusting sleeve to the case. Early models are more prone to leak from the side seals due to the swing axle design than the late models but all years can begin leaking from the aging O-rings. Side seal replacement is pretty straight forward so this article will address the O-ring replacement. Clean the differential case (car wash). You may need all of the following tools so be prepared: A side sleeve tool; the best is a donor sleeve with a ½ inch drive socket welded to it for turning the side sleeve in the case. (Borrow a tool from another member?) You may need an impact wrench to get the sleeve started and then a ratchet to continue. Also useful for Powerglide cars is a 12 inch piece of ¼ inch by 1 inch+ steel stock for turning the sleeve behind the dipstick tube once it is loosened. Vendors sell tools for turning the sleeve but if you have a 50 year old sleeve that is stuck you will need the donor sleeve tool mentioned above, operated with an impact tool. Use of a hammer and chisel on the lugs will most likely break them off. You can remove the side sleeves and replace the O-rings one at a time without disturbing the ring and pinion match by raising the car and supporting it in a completely level position and indexing the sleeves with chalk or marker when you have removed the axle. Start with the passenger side. For early models: Remove the entire axle and unhook the speedometer cable. Drain the differential for 63 and earlier. For 64 either use a suction gun or simply put a pan under the area when you unscrew the first sleeve. Good time to change gear lube anyway. For late models: Either use a suction gun for removing gear lube or just put a pan under the case when removing the first sleeve. Remove the inner U-joint and you may want to drop the lower strut although you can work around it. Bend over the French lock and remove the bolt and stub axle from the differential. All models: Remove the lock tab and bolt from the passenger side and use chalk, a marker, or a chisel to index the sleeve at the 12:00 position. The mark needs to survive any cleaning you do. Then remove the sleeve, change the O-ring and side seal, clean the chamfer area on the case where the O-ring makes contact, clean and lube the threads, lube the O-ring, replace the sleeve and tighten back to zero. Then try to go past zero. If you can go past zero, count the number of notches and back up by half. When you do the other side you will add the remainder of the notches to the zero point. This will put your ring gear in its original position. When you remove the driver s side sleeve the differential unit may drop slightly. If it does, simply use your left thumb through the sleeve to raise it while screwing the sleeve into the case. The bearings require a pre-load so tighten the last sleeve to 20 ft.lbs. and back off two notches. Peaks and valleys each count as a notch. Note: Early model manual transmission positraction units have a history of breaking the plate cover in numerous pieces. The differential still works but if you remove the right side sleeve the pieces all fall out and complete removal and repair will be necessary. Before starting work on an early model that is supposed to have positraction you could jack up the car and try turning one wheel (neutral, no parking brake) while someone holds the other one. If the opposite wheel can be held without difficulty then the positraction plate cover may be broken. However, there is the possibility that you do not have positraction or the slip plates may be completely worn out, so investigate further. Late models have a stronger positraction plate cover and do not break.

January In Review Continued from page 1 The big news for 2016 was wining the bid to host the 2017 CORSA International Convention. There are 31 Convention Committee Chairpersons who have so far helped select a theme, design a logo, choose a host hotel, find off site venues, taste test banquet selections (tough job, I know), work out convention budgets and logistics and spend an exhausting weekend explaining it all to the National CORSA Committee. With Convention Committee meetings taking up so much time we ve cancelled our customary meeting programs until after the Convention. Too bad, Gary Wolfe did a good job coming up with fun programs; maybe we can get him to present a few more after the Convention s over. In spite of all the Convention work we still had time for tech sessions, socials and a whole host of Corvair events. Mike Dawson hosted three very well attended Working Tech Session/Front Yard Car Shows in his Belton shop, which greatly contributes to our membership arriving at events in a Corvair. Terry Kalp hosted three Tunas at the Kalp s Corvair Emporium near Wichita. [This would be a good place to insert a reminder of Mike s 2017 Mid- Winter Tech Session on January 28 at 3 p.m. and to direct readers to page 2 for more info.] Believe it or not there were only four HACOA member-hosted social events for the year. The first one was in March when Jerry and Donna Pentzer invited everyone to Arkansas for their Pentzerville Anniversary Party. Next came the Spring Dust Off in May, hosted by John and Linda Mellies, where Kat King was selected as Member of the Year and winner of the 2017 Mellies Cup. The Fall Fling/ Hoelting Airport Chili Feed, hosted by Wes and Kim Mellies and the Hoetling family, wrapped up October. We finished the year with Kevin and Ada Koch hosting us at Cascones Italian Restaurant for our annual Holiday Party/Convoluted Gift Exchange in December. We weren t hosting socials because we were all too busy with parades, cruises, car shows and other Corvair events. The big one, of course, was the 2016 International CORSA Convention in Springfield, Illinois. We had 38 members make the trip and most of us arrived in or with a Corvair. Yes, members won trophies: Autocross, Concours and Model Car Concours but, in spite of a few mechanical problems along the way, no one got the Hard Luck Award. At the end of September we had 32 members in 13 Corvairs make it all the way to Tulsa for the Great Plains Corvair Round Up, this time with no mechanical problems. Continued on page 5

January In Review Continued from page 4 Other big Corvair events included Road America in Wisconsin in July (which featured the 50 year Yenko Stinger Reunion), the Corvair Track Classic and, though not strictly Corvair, the SCCA Solo Nationals both in Nebraska last August. Autocrossers finished their season with the SCCA s Halloweenie here at the Blue River Community College track where we will be holding our Convention Autocross. Costumes for both car and driver were a huge part of the fun. As for parades, cruises, and car shows, they ranged from more than 2000 entrants in the Ol Marias River Run Cruise (where Larry Sherwood was delighted to find his blue and white Rampy on their 2017 calendar!) to small church socials with only one or two Corvairs and a handful of other cars. Two notable shows were the Leavenworth Cruisers Car Show and the Lathrop Father s Day Car Show where HACOA won the prizes for the largest club participation. Would you look at this list! (Keep in mind that a lot of these events were organized by, or HACOA members were coaxed into participating by, Kat King.) St. Paul Methodist Church Trunk-n- Treat, Bonner Springs Tiblow Days Parade, Relay for Life, Trenton Car Show, St. Jo Casino Cruise-N-Shine, Racing to Salvation Car Show, Tour of St. Jo area attractions, Robidoux Row Museum and Old Fashioned Lawn Party, NWMSR monthly cruise, Kansas Speedway laps, Automotive Career Day at Longview Community College, King of Kings Car Show, Lee s Summit HS Homecoming Parade, NWMSU Homecoming Parade, Bonner Springs United Methodist Church Car Show and probably something else I missed. Lots more happen but that was a quick look, and as always, A good time was had by all.

Convention Corner By Helen and Gary Moore The good news: The Comfort Inn (and its sister hotel, the Holiday Inn) has offered us trailer parking! The other good news: not only is Suzanne Berger taking over as Banquet Chair she will be taking the job of Indoor Events Chair. Thanks go to Cindy Anders for taking care of most of the details and to Suzanne for stepping in. More good news: The convention registration form will appear in the March issue of the Communiqué. The March issue will cover the tour locations and hopefully we will have photos that they will use. The bad news: There will be a 5000-person convention in the nearby Silverstein Arena on the Saturday of our convention. The managers at our host hotels said that participants of this particular convention disappear into Silverstein Arena early in the morning. The only problem is traffic around the Arena around 8 a.m. The Arena is on the south side I-70, so maybe we can hold the Saturday People s Choice Car Display on the north side. The other bad news: We don t really have a place for the Saturday People s Choice Car Display yet. Independence Center Shopping Mall has offered us a spot for the Car Display. The spot is one that would bring a lot of attention to the Corvair. Unfortunately it is expensive and not as close to the host hotel as we would like. The Bass Pro Shop has also offered their lot, but it is even further away. We are still hoping that we can hold the display in the shopping center across the street from the hotel. Unfortunately the management of that property will not commit at this time. The might be bad news: Our special use application to the Jackson County Parks and Recs for use of the area behind (west) the Hilton Garden Inn to be used as the Concours Field has been sent in. In the past a blanket rule said no vehicles were allowed on the grass, but their policy has changed. Instead of a blanket restriction they now consider each case separately. They haven t said no yet so keep your fingers crossed. Just news: There will be a Convention Committee meeting at 6 p.m. in the front room at Paul & Jacks on Tuesday, January 10. This will be followed by the Board meeting at 7 p.m. Social Hour will be going on in the back room until the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. January 2017 President's Corner January, 2017 By Mike Dawson Happy New Year Everybody, our year for the International Convention has arrived! If you have not yet joined a committee or have not been invited to join, please consider picking something you would enjoy being part of and contact our chairpersons. You ll be working with, and helping, friends and fellow Corvair enthusiasts in just plain having fun! I am going to present one of the tech sessions at the convention this summer and I have most of the preparation complete. I would like to share it (practice!) with HACOA at a mid-winter tech session in January and collect feedback from other members that I can add to my handout. The topic is Rochester Carburetors and you would be surprised at how many items can be an issue in those simple little one barrels. I have a multi page handout made up plus a lot of display items. We will have the usual feeding period afterwards and this would be a good way for newer members to become better acquainted (name tags provided). I also have some door prizes donated for the occasion by other HACOA members, including multi meters and torque wrenches. There is a notice with additional information elsewhere in this newsletter.
