Heart of America Corvair Owners Association R 1964 VAIRC Kansas City Area 50 years 2014 Volume 51 Issue 10 October 2015 September Meeting Highlights By Gary Moore The September meeting started off with Chocolate Stout Cake, compliments of Dean Sego. It was delicious and yes, Guinness Stout is one of the ingredients. It seems that we have had a plethora of baked goodies at the last few meetings, an added incentive for good attendance. Cliff Carlino opened the meeting; the minutes were read and the treasurer s report given. There were no new members or guests, so more cake for the rest of us! Trophies and awards: Scott Allison did well at the races. At Hasting s Corvair Event he finished first in his class in autocross and third in drag racing. At Marshalltown he finished first in his class. Wes and Kim Mellies finished second and third respectively at Marshalltown. Scott went over the Social Calendar. As usual, this took up most of the meeting. (We were a busy bunch in September!) See page 2 or the online calendar. The meeting was adjourned and Paul Sergeant presented the night s program, The Inner Workings of the CORSA Board. or Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About CORSA, But Were Afraid To Ask. He revealed many highly classified secrets that came up during his tenure as president. However he was not willing to have his records scrutinized by an independent council. Dean Sego puts the lid back on his empty cake carrier. The Chocolate Stout Cake disappeared pretty fast. Can't wait to see what goodies will show up at the October Meeting! The new 4 x 6 club banner was on display and ready for the trip to North Little Rock. (Unfortunately the Wyndham Hotel in North Little Rock had no place to hang banners.)

The Preventive Maintenance Series By Mike Dawson Electric Fuel Pumps With the continuing plague of mechanical fuel pump failures that I have encountered recently, I made the decision to do some converting. Why Corvair pumps are such a problem to manufacture correctly is an unanswered question. Do all aftermarket mechanical fuel pumps fail on a regular basis? I doubt it, and although a failed pump is neither expensive nor difficult to change it should not be a continuing issue with an otherwise delightful car. Leaks are the latest issue, and there is now a red warning card inside the Airtex box advising about tightening the screws during installation. However, more than one tightening is usually necessary and none of us wants to see a fire in the rear view mirror. I recently installed an electric pump on my 61 Lakewood wagon with the intention of determining the best location, type of pump and engine compartment fuel line configuration. I first installed an Airtex ES8012 pump (5.5-9 psi) on the bottom/back of the trunk, just in front of the cross-member. That location makes it shielded from road debris, deep snow and floor jacks. I used 5/16 fuel hose for both inlet and outlet since that makes the pump easy to remove and replace if necessary (in my case I wanted to test more than one pump). Mounted with some miscellaneous rubber bushings it is very quiet and with the engine running it is not heard at all. The engine compartment fuel line configuration presented several possibilities. I was routing for a 140 engine but all the others would be similar. I used the Clark s fuel pump plug to fill the hole where the original pump was located and I fabricated a new inlet line from the rubber connection by the starter through the shroud and with a 90 degree turn to the center of the engine where I could mount the necessary T fitting (picture below). That also necessitated bending and double flaring one new ¼ fuel line to the left side and using one of Clark s pre-bent right side lines that just happened to fit. Overall the installation looks good and contains all double flare steel lines in the engine compartment. Wiring is simple, a good ground and a power wire to the side of the fuse box; hot only with the key on. The current draw Photo by Mike Dawson on the pump I installed is 0.9 amps, low enough that you could add that to your radio fuse. An inertia switch to shut off the pump in case of a crash is next. I checked the fuel pressure delivered at a carburetor inlet and found that the ES8012 pump provided 8 PSI. After driving the car for a week I replaced that pump with the ES8016 pump which is a lower pressure unit (2.5-4 PSI). The pressure delivered at a carburetor was 4 PSI which is just under the original specification (4.5 PSI) for a Corvair pump from the factory. More test driving included a long hill at 70 with all four carburetors open: I encountered no fuel starvation. Other Options: Clark s also offer a center block for the original pump that lets the fuel flow straight through; this eliminates fabricating lines and looks close to stock. I installed one of these on my late model sedan and it is an easier installation with no line routing; just disassemble and re-assemble the old mechanical pump using the original fittings. I also looked at an option of using a series of fittings to eliminate the stock pump at its original location but discarded that idea; picture nearby. Upsides to an electric pump. I have never seen one leak. Pump failure is very rare and vapor lock does not occur since the pump is near the tank and it is pushing fuel through all the hot spots instead of trying to create a vacuum as the original does. Peace of mind; you should not have to check your fuel pump at every stop while on a trip. Downsides to an electric pump. The electric pump has a small pre-filter, so you would need a clean tank and even then you should check the filter on a regular basis. Use of rubber fuel line at the pump would require yearly inspection for signs of deterioration (but it is only a 10 minute replacement job). If a failure did occur on the road, replacing the pump or pre-filter would require jacking up the vehicle. Costs could add up depending on what configuration you use, i.e. pump ($30), Clark s plug ($10), Clark s inertia switch ($83) and flow through fuel pump block ($46). Those before me have used other pumps, locations and configurations; this is just my experience that I hope might be useful as a guide if you consider an electric pump. Be creative and share if you come up with a good idea. October 2015 Page 3

Page 4 October 2015 Marshalltown: Corvair Time Trials By Gary Moore It was quite a weekend at the Iowa International Go-Kart Raceway. Thanks go to Terry Kalp for stepping in to host the autocross. There were lots of fast Corvairs, lots of fast drivers and plenty of fun. No one had more fun than Linda Mellies. She got in her laps, helped during lunch and helped in the control tower. She also kept John in line for the most part. The only person busier may have been Mike Dawson, doing his best to keep the cars running well. He might have set a speed record for removing, disassembling, cleaning and reinstalling carburetors. I brought the grill so John Mellies and I grilled burgers and dogs for everyone. There were 19 drivers and 14 cars including two father and son teams, Tim and Ryan Verthein and Chuck and Eric Procise, a mother and daughter-in-law team Linda and Kim Mellies, (okay, Wes, that means there was a mother and son team too.) There were also two husband and wife teams Wes and Kim, and Michael and Tracy LeVeque. And finally the twins, Travis Bolton and Dominique Allen, driving Terry Kalp s Shark. (Just checking to see if they read the newsletter.) There were drivers from at least six states including Alaska. Everyone got in plenty of laps; nearly 200 were made on Saturday while people were shaking out and tuning their cars. Close to 90 laps were made on Sunday, the official timed day. Three drivers were able to break the 40 second barrier, Michael LeVeque in his Stinger, Kevin Willson from Alaska and Ned Madsen from Kansas driving Kevin Willson s car. Only three casualties were suffered. Wes Mellies engine sent a rod up through the top cover. The Shark s drivetrain broke out of its mounts. And Michael LeVeque s Stinger rolled to a stop with the engine running but no power going to the rear wheels; probably caused by a broken shaft in the transmission. The LeVeques had driven their car to the event so they had to borrow Scott Allison s truck and trailer to take the car home. Linda Mellies sold Kim s racecar at the meet so they trailered Scott s car home for him. Everything worked out well. Linda Mellies powers through turn five. Linda recounts her thrilling near mishap and how she kept the car under control in turn one. Kim Mellies later won the coveted Mowed d' Lawn award in the same car spinning out on the same corner. It may look like the Stinger is losing to a golf cart but the golf cart is actually the tow vehicle. Scott Allison gets a multi-flag signal from the tower. Kim and Wes Mellies are getting a little payback. When Scott was on the tower earlier he had used a nonconventional signal at the end of Wes' final lap. By the way did anyone else see the full eclipse of the moon the other night?

October 2015 Page 5 September Working Tech Session By Helen Moore I don t know if HACOA set a record for Tech Session attendance this time or not, but 29 Corvairs, 39 people and near perfect weather certainly made for a wonderful day in CorvairLand (a.k.a. Mike and Sandy Dawson s place.) There was no way to get everything in one picture so click on the picture above for a video walk around. Thanks Mike and Sandy! Almost everyone was working on some project but some just came to help or visit. Don Barta, who drove his 64 Monza convertible, told me he was, Just admiring the beautiful cars and enjoying the people. Karl Cozad said he was enjoying the nice top-down driving weather but he also cleaned the oil off the distributor of his 66 V-8 Corsa. Scott Allison drove his red and white Loadside and spent all of his time helping other people. Ed Parks drove his Corvette but we can forgive him because he said he finally got the Vette off the lift and now the Vair was on it. Kat King came by after the Olathe Old Settler s Parade in her 64 Monza convertible, Candy. Linda and Sandy Reece, also in the parade, had a loose trim piece to fix on their 64 Spyder. Kevin Koch repaired a license plate light along with identifying and repairing a bad ground on the left tail light on his red and white 63 Rampside. Gary Moore changed the oil pressure sending unit on our red and white Rampside. I got laughed at by Scott for going from one red and white truck to the next to find my lawn chairs. Don and Wilma Corey did a tune-up and fixed a leaking tire on their 65 Monza coupe. Jim Gately dropped by for short visit in his 66 Monza convertible. The clutch cable broke on the way home so he brought the car back to Mike to work on later. Before everyone left the boys pushed it into the garage. Bill and Joan Bennett Just wanted to come by in their yellow 66 Monza. Bill got put to work grilling burgers and dogs with Sherman Rutherford s help. Sherman drove his dark blue 67 coupe. Mike s garage is clean enough to eat out of. Really. Sandy Dawson, Joan Bennett, Sheila Carlino and Marcia Taylor set up the food tables while Bill and Sherman grilled and everyone else got to a stopping point on their projects.

Page 6 October 2015 September Working Tech Session Chris Green s 66 Monza sedan had broken bolts on the oil pan. When he discovered that the bolt holes on pan did not line up with those on the engine he had to enlarge pan holes to get it to fit. Larry Sherwood intended to replace the alternator in his blue and white Rampy but never got around to it. He spent his time under Chris Green s car. Later they also synced the carburetors. Sharon Bybee and Elaine Richardson enjoyed visiting in the warm sunshine while Fred and Jack worked on the cars. Mike changed the master cylinder and did an oil change on the Bybee s 65 Monza sedan. The Richardson s 64 Monza Convertible, Cory, had work done on the front brakes and a sticking wheel cylinder got repaired. Mike Dawson, wearing his "still plays with cars" T-shirt, prepares to hand out door prize tickets. Gary Jones had the entire instrument cluster out of his 65 Monza convertible reworking the speedometer. Chuck Morris relocated the A/C condenser on his 64 Monza convertible. (Ha! Caught him reading the instructions!) Cindy Anders helped her dad install a new seal. Chuck left early to go fishing. Dorothy drove the water pumper home and Cindy got to drive the convertible! Ray Sego brought in Sally, his 64 Monza, for a diagnosis and tune-up.

September Working Tech Session October 2015 Page 7 Although Mark Whitman drove his 64 Spyder, he had Mike weld the clutch pedal for his Lakewood wagon so it didn t end up like Linda Reece s Spyder broken and on the floor. (See PMS VairCor Aug 2015). Old Settler's Parade Luke Spence from the Kansas City Auto Museum contacted HACOA to ask if our club would supply five Corvair convertibles for their Old Settlers Parade on September 12. He said this was the largest parade in Kansas. He gave specific directions on best route to get through downtown Olathe and to line up at the corner of Kansas Avenue and Elm Street. I forwarded these directions to our selected drivers; however, none of us were allowed entrance through these streets. Each one of us, depending on what guards we spoke to, went five different scenic routes around all the barricades. Miraculously, we all came together at the same spot, still four blocks short of our meeting place. Our museum hosts eventually found us. Marty O Mara and his wife lead us in their red His son was the entertainer of our group. This big macho kid sat atop the back and waved like a royal princess to everyone. He was so funny and had a ball with the crowd! Several times I heard, You need a tiara! I followed them in Kandy, my Pompeian red 63 Monza. Travis Bolton drove his 62 Monza wagon and Gary Wolfe drove his 66 Turbo 500 but the two of them spent their time working on a differential for one of Travis s other cars. By Kat King Taylor West brought his wife Marcia who doesn t usually get to come to HACOA events. While she was off visiting, Taylor got help replacing the outer sway bar bushings and engine perimeter seal from Cliff Carlino and Don Wagner. Kat King understood that they needed convertibles to carry dignitaries, which is why she did not bring the HACOA magnetic banners to put on the sides of the cars. Our five cars and a Cadillac were the only autos representing the Kansas City Auto Museum. Photo by Kat King And, as I have been known to do, I stopped and put up my engine lid (just for a short time) to expose the engine. The judges and media commented on that. Behind me were Linda and Sandy Reece in Linda s first car, a pretty pale yellow 1964 Spyder. Gary Jones brought the only late model in the group, his gold 66 Monza. Last but not least came Patrick Reavey driving his absolutely beautiful, silver metallic blue, 1964 Monza. We all did show well and it was a beautiful day. After the parade we pulled over and parted ways. Linda, Sandy and I followed Gary for lunch at Jack Stack BBQ. Then we met everybody at Dawson s tech session.

Page 8 October 2015 Bonner Springs UMC Car Show By Gary Moore When our daughter, Rachel, asked us to come to her church s car show we thought it would be fun and there was the promise of free root beer floats. I told her about the Ace Hardware Store Car Show and she asked if the Mystery Machine and Scooby might be able to come too. John and Linda Mellies said they would be glad to loan the van and costume, but they couldn t be there as they were preparing for a trip and a birthday party. Helen and I picked up the van on our way to the car show and the church supplied a young energetic person to wear the Scooby suit Scott did not complain. We had six HACOA Corvairs in all thanks to Scott Allison, Gary Wolfe, Gary Jones and Larrry and Suzi Sherwood to go along with a diverse assortment of classic cars from other clubs. There was music, plenty of spectators, a bounce house for the kids, and free hot dogs and root beer floats. Helen and our daughter did face painting and I took photos of nearly everyone posing with Scooby. We were so busy we never got a root beer float. The Bonner Springs Methodist Church and I would like to thank John and Linda for the loan of the Mystery Machine and costume. Photo by Suzi Sherwood Photo by Suzi Sherwood Scott Allison was delighted to have his picture taken with Scooby. When this kid asked for a rampy Helen had to ask, a what? When she looked up to see Larry and Suzi Sherwood she knew he really DID say, Rampy. You want a blue and white one, right? Of course. Miles wanted one just like Granpa's on his cheek. His older brother, Charlie, also asked for a Rampy but a red and black one on his arm. Charlie must have a plan.

October 2015 Page 10 The President s Corner By Cliff Carlino I have occasionally heard people talk about what fun it is to drive on Hwy 65 in northern Arkansas and I made a mental note to experience it myself one day. That day arrived when Gary Moore asked me if the HACOA Press Corps (Gary and Helen) could escort my Presidential Motorcade to Little Rock for the Great Plains Roundup. He suggested we take Hwy 13 south through Branson and continue straight down to Little Rock. Sounded like a great plan to me. (I finally figured out, after almost two years, what a good gig it is being President. People even want to escort you and plan out the route and everything even where to eat and stop for non-ethanol gas!) I was having all kinds of fun driving the twisty roads before I remembered that we were on Hwy 65 and this is what everyone was talking about! Now I can be the one to tell people that if they have never driven Hwy 65 they need to give it a go the next time they are heading south. The Arkansas Corvair club did a very nice job on the Roundup. You would never have known that it was their first one. I thought it was organized and well run. Speaking of a well-run event, unfortunately I will miss this month s meeting due to work commitments. When I told Sheila that I had to work, she didn t hesitate in saying that since she is First Lady she would take my place. I hope she doesn t get cold Wesley UMC Rods and Ribs Car Show Cliff stopping along Hwy 65 just outside Greenbrier AR. 11 October 2015 Page 11 A perfect spot for the People's Choice Car Display is the Riverfront Park on the Arkansas River. First Time's a Charm! ACC Hosts 2015 Round Up You sure couldn t tell it was the Arkansas Corvair Club s first Round Up. They kept things simple with Valve Cover Races on Friday evening and a People s Choice car display, a Fun Run, and a Banquet on Saturday for a very enjoyable two-day event. HACOA was well represented by the 37 members who arrived with a total of 17 Corvairs (only three of which were trailered). So what did the ACC get right? For starters the Registration Desk and the Hospitality Room were well staffed and well stocked. The Valve Cover venue was large enough for everyone to see the track. Saturday s car display was in Riverfront Park with plenty of shade, a nice view of the river and about 60 Corvairs to vote for. The Fun Run/Rally really was fun. And this is coming from someone (me) who doesn t generally enjoy rallies. By Helen Moore The instructions were clear, the landmarks were interesting, and the stop at Burns Park to throw dice, toss fan belts and beanbags was great! Someone worked hard at making that event work so smoothly especially considering our hotel was the starting point for a 3000-bicycle tour that morning which had many streets blocked off good job! After the rally, we had plenty of time to come in, cool off and clean up for the banquet. The banquet ran smoothly in spite of Keith LaCrosse having to squint at Clyde Jones s handwriting. Raffle prize tickets were called in between the awards. And maybe I was just hungry but I thought the food was good too. A lucky person at each table winning the Corvair parts clock centerpiece made by Elvis King added the perfect finishing touch to a fun event. Good job, ACC!!! photo by Cliff Carlino A HACOA group gathered at the Inland Maritime Museum near the hotel on Friday morning. The museum includes the USS Razorback a Balao-class submarine launched in January of In 1962 it was converted to the more modern Guppy-class submarine. It received five battle stars during WWII and four campaign stars in the Vietnam Conflict.
