I really enjoyed being the prez.there were about another 1000 things that I would of liked to get done but you know... I was hoping to pick up a few new younger members to take over the payment when we are gone. I am still working on that! It was a great year, the car show was a great success along with the rod run thanks to all those people that put so much work In making it a success. I want to thank Tom, Bob and Floyd for the great job they did, I am looking forward to another fun year out in the membership chairs, I plan on coming up with new FUN things to do! Remember if you Got em, Drive em! PEACE Happy Holidays!!!!! Lynn Lots more!! 2015 Officers, Floyd Opp, Secretary, Lynn Delameter, President
2 GARY and CARLEEN MAHAN Gary and his wife Carleen Mahan joined the Counts in 2014, and have been car and motorcycle people most of their married lives. Gary wanted to finish a long time project, a1949 Baby Lincoln 2 door sedan that needed parts that took up to 8 years to find.. The body is mounted on a mid 70 s Lincoln chassis, complete with the Lincoln 460 CI motor and drive train. The car is painted a satin Charcoal color and the interior was done by Carleen in a light gray tuck and roll material. That is Carleen s business so if you need an interior or furniture upholstered give her a call. Gary and Carleen sold a motorcycle that they had and purchased a really nice first gen Mustang 2 door coupe with a black paint job and shadow flames. Now they both have a car to take to cruises and shows. Gary s 49 Lincoln was the victim of a another car backing into it at a outdoor car show which broke the pot metal grille. Now the insurance company (Hagerty} is doing what Gary did the first time around, spending countless hours trying to find a replacement. Good luck Gary. Gary just had surgery to correct some serious back problems so, hang in there Gary, there s always a light at the end of the tunnel! Have Your car Put on a wooden plaque for the holidays or it makes a neat gift or award. Check it out! Counts Streetin News, WINTER 2015 PAGE 2 check out the Counts website countscarclub.com
3 Ann and I tried to make as many outdoor shows as possible and more coverage is in this issue. I hope you made a bunch too and if you took any pictures send them to me and a short recap of the event and where it was and I ll include it in the Streetin News! One such story is the fantastic Road Trip, club member, Don Oskey made during mid July thru mid September of this year. Check out the story and photos in this issue! There were a couple of small cruise in car shows at the Box Elder Dairy Queen in August and September. Not big Counts turnouts but we did make a showing. Here is a tidbit we received from former Counts member, Dave Hill. It is a ticket in one of his last concerts. stub from the Counts Rod and Custom Exhibition that was held at the City Auditorium that was located at 7th. St and Quincy St. from 1962 until At that time the City Auditorium was torn down and replaced with the Dahl Fine Arts Center. Those Counts Car Shows were a blast and it was sad to see that building destroyed as it was a lot cheaper to put a show on back in the 60 s. The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center was finished in 1977 just in time to feature Elvis Presley Another note of interest is that Rodders Journal did a story on line about the Counts with several photos I sent them that I had taken of some of the original Counts members back in the early 1960 s. I thought they did a great job and there will be another photo in the next issue of Rodders Journal out in a month or so if not already. Rodders Journal is a quarterly full color magazine that sells for around $12.95 at quality book stores like BAM or $49.00 for a yearly subscription. The holiday season is fast approaching and the Counts have had the Awards Banquet already and soon to be followed by the Christmas Party and Dinner. The Parade of Lights, just after Thanksgiving was a lot of fun with a great participation of club members. Many thanks go out to Bob Mallow for setting up the Story Book Island Christmas Lights tour that we help with one night each year. It s amazing how many people bring their families out to enjoy the HUGE DISPLAY of LIGHTS throughout the park. I had the good fortune of talking on the phone with an old club member from the late 50 s and early 60 s, Jack Slawik. Jack lives in Oregon and has built top fuel Funny Cars for several fam ous drag bracers. He is now restoring Ford Model T s and A s. The story that Rodders Journal did online had a picture of Jack s 1932 Ford sedan in pink primer and gold metalflake wheels and in a Counts Car Show at Baken Park in He said it brought tears to his eyes. He sold the Deuce years ago! Keep in touch, Jack! It s always great remembering the Good Ole Days, JN Counts Streetin News, WINTER, 2015, Page 3
4 The Neuzils decided to make the trek down to Torrington, WY. On August 28th and renew some old acquaintances that we hadn t seen in quite a few years. Back in the late 70 s the Counts made the Scottsbluff run a regular event. It moved to Torrington and became the Cow Chip Nationals in the 80 s and later was joined by the Cars in the Park held in Morril, NE. Now they have combined all 3 events into the current event and have members of all the clubs help put it on. I met JL from Scottsbluff and we talked over some of the past events and where some of the OLD members are now and what they are doing. It appears health is taking it s toll on some of their members just like the Counts members. This show had 70 entries and there was a poker run after a burger and hot dog feed. This was followed by games including the famous Cow Chip Throw. Lots of fun! Then it was awards time at 4 pm. It was nice to see some new cars as well as old friends! 5 The Dakotas Chapter SDC 2015 Labor Day Weekend Studebaker Event is now history. We had entries from 8 states and Canada along with 910 people that voted on Sunday for their favorite cars. There are many tourists still in the Black Hills and that they choose to attend the Studebaker car show. The Dakotas Chapter Studebaker Drivers Club want to thank you all for making this such a fun event. Mary Coffin, our go to gal, did some checking into the almost 1000 spectator voting ballots and found that they were from 27 states and 7 foreign countries. Unbelievable We hope all that took part in the tour as well as the meals enjoyed them and your response to our questionnaire will help us plan for next years event. Just send them in to the address on the form, it will be appreciated. It was so good to see so many of our old friends as well as the new people that came to check us out. We did pick up 7 new members from different parts of the country, welcome aboard and keep in touch by or a letter. and let us know what is happening in you part of the country. Many thanks to Brad Canfield and Dwayne Breyer for all the work they did to make the Saturday tour so interesting. Quote on a ballot..this was the hardest choice at any car show I've ever been at! But everyone is a winner! 7 Saturday, September 19th. started off a little cool as we headed through Custer, SD and over to Newcastle, WY and the car show held in the city park. It was another record year for car entries with quite a few new cars and trucks on hand, over 200 again! We met up with 6 or 7 Camaros from the Rapid City area and they were in force at the Newcastle show once again. It is amazing how many different types of cars and trucks are in this show. This year the Glamper trailers were down some but the over all show had some quality entries and the top 2 winners were a gen 2 Camaro and a 48 Buick convertible & trailer. 8 Milestone Reached At 33rd Annual Swap Meet & Car Corral In Rapid City South Dakota. By Peggy and Bill Napoli The 1 Big Day Event! The 33rd Annual Super Swap Meet and Car Corral is in the history books for That's right, 33 years, rain, snow, wind, or whatever. This is the largest Swap Meet, and Car Corral in the region. For the first time, every single available space in the concourse area of the Central States Fairgrounds was sold out. Vendors filled the area from one end to the other, to sell their car, pickup, truck, race car, boat, motorcycle parts, memorabilia, toys, or anything that was related to the automotive industry. In the Car Corral there was the largest assembly of vehicles being sold by private individuals ever. The promoters, Bill and Peggy Napoli even went down Saturday evening to lay out more vendor spaces, because of all the calls from interested people who missed the preregistration deadline on Saturday. Sunday morning September 13th started out very cool at 4 am as the vendors from across the country started arriving to get their goods set up in their 15 by 25 f oot vendor spots. These are some of largest vendor spots you will find at any swap meet. The preregistered vendors arrived early, and were quickly checked in by the experienced crew who are the mainstay of this swap meet. There is even a crew to help the vendors unload their goods so they can get set up quicker, if they need help. There was all kind of custom wheels, tires, speed parts, 4 speeds, antique parts, signs, vintage toys, etc. One guy really stood out. His booth was filled with antique race parts, including Flathead, early Corvette. Oldsmobile fuel injections, plus many others. Ardun Heads, Hemi stuff, and much more. No doubt he was the star vendor for old race car guys. Vendors from Arizona, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and all across South Dakota made this absolutely the biggest and best ever Swap Meet and Car Corral. This Swap meet is filled by 99 percent private individuals who clean out the shed, garage, and basement of their excess automotive, motorcycle and memorabilia items and bring them to this swap meet to sell, or trade. Generally most of the vendors end up taking home more than they brought, because of all the neat items others bring, that they just have to have. One of the best things about this Swap Meet is, when the gates open at 10am, Admission is FREE! This was the 13th year that the vendor space prices have not been raised, and no admission fee to the public when the gates open at 10am. Peggy came up with a special (For Vendors Only) 30th Anniversary Swap Meet license plate that was given to the vendors. The license plates were coveted by all who received their 30th Anniversary souvenir. Peggy is working on something really special for the 35th Anniversary Swap Meet, that only the vendors will receive for celebrating with us at the 35th Annual Event in The th Annual Super Swap Meet and Car Corral Date is set: Sunday September 11th, You can contact Bill or Peggy at Motion Unlimited Museum in Rapid City, for more information.
