2 Ever since we built the Ronster in 1997, many Mustang owners have admired it in letters and in person! Yes, it may be a little extreme for most... but if you want to take a ride on the wild side, then we have the kit for you! The Ronster was featured on the cover and in a 5 page article in the September, 1997 issue of Mustang & Fords Magazine. Since then Mustang owners from all over the world have contacted Mustangs Plus and asked for information on how to build a Ronster for themselves. The Ronster Kit, available only through Mustangs Plus, contains all the parts necessary to convert any 1965 to 1968 Mustang Coupe into this terrifi c looking 2-seater Mustang Roadster! After installation of the Ronster Kit, you can build the rest of the car the way you want to by using our fi berglass hoods, valances, and trunk lids to get The Look you re after! Other options, such as tires and wheels, seats, steering wheels, engine and transmission combinations, suspension packages and more can be chosen to help you build the Roadster of your dreams! #8533 ORDER ONLINE! mustangsplus.com Ronster Kits 81
3 The BY MUSTANGS PLUS Ronster shown here with our new Restomod Hood! Ronster kits will fit all Coupes! While at an Arizona SAAC (Shelby American Automobile Club) track event at Phoenix International Raceway, Ben J. Smith, the original designer and chief engineer of the Ford Retractables, Jim Smart (the editor of Mustangs and Fords magazine), and I were standing in the pits checking out a couple of Corvette roadsters. Both Corvettes had full roll cages in them and they gave me an idea. How about building a Mustang roadster by cutting the top off a 1965 coupe and using the Mustang Retractable Under Body Strengthening Kit? The area behind the seats would have to have a cover made for it because there wasn t anything like it available, but that would be no problem. Both Ben and Jim liked the idea and offered to help me with the project. Ben said he would be glad to help design the cover. Jim said that it would definitely be a feature car for the magazine. A couple of months later, after finishing the Mustang Retractable project, I decided to go ahead with the roadster project. When I started telling my friends and business acquaintances what was happening, they all thought it was a great idea. Why, with the availability of so many fiberglass body parts and custom ORDER TOLL FREE! 82 Ronster Kits
4 accessories, Mustang Roadsters could be built a 1,000 different ways and, hopefully, open up a new market for people to build a Mustang that hadn t considered building one before; the Street Rodders. So the work began. George and I installed the Chassis Strengthening Kit to a 1965 C code Mustang Coupe shell that I bought from the local scrap yard. Don t worry. It was all ready scheduled to be crushed in the next couple of days so we actually saved a Mustang! A few days later, Ben flew in from Phoenix and he and I designed the tonneau cover for the rear seat area. It turned into quite a production. Taking great care to leave all of the trunk area intact so that there would be a usable trunk and no weakening in that area, we actually built a tonneau cover onto the car and then made a fiberglass mold so that we could produce as many tonneau covers as we wanted. We then broke the original tonneau cover off the car and fitted the first one that had been made from the mold. About this time, the Ronster name appeared. As the project progressed, it was always referred to as Ron s Roadster. One day, as several of us were talking, the question of a personalized license plate came up and someone stated that Ron s Roadster wouldn t fit on the plate. The next thing you know, Ron s Roadster became the Ronster, which would fit on a license plate. And the name stuck! Unfortunately, RONSTER is already issued to another person here in California. Jim Smart helped me pick a color by showing the narrowed down list and painted test panels to other car enthusiast at the Petersen Publications offices. The hands down winner, he declared, was 1995 Ford Metallic Sapphire Blue. Why? Because it changed color depending on the light that hit it! In the bright sun, it is a dark, metallic blue. In the shade, it is a striking purple! And everybody thought it was a cool color! (See, we re showing our age with that cool thing!) After we knew what color it was going to be, The Ronster was shipped off to Kevin Sittner at Precision Body and Paint in Lodi, California for the paint and body work. If you have seen the Ronster in person, you know what a great job they did! After the paint and body work was done, we brought the Ronster back to Mustangs Plus and fitted and planned for all the little things. Like the 1,000 watt CD stereo system, the 5.0 Fuel Injected Mortorsport engine, the Art Carr AOD (automatic over drive) transmission, the Stainless Steel 4 wheel disc brake system, ect. Then it was back to Kevin at Precision for the remainder of the building and final paint work. As the project wound to completion, we found ourselves looking at the ever closer approaching deadline for the photo shoot for Mustangs and Fords magazine. Kevin and Bill Evans, his right hand man at Precision, were literally working night and day trying to finish this beautiful work of art. George and I went to pick up the Ronster on a Monday evening before we were to leave for L.A. where the photo shoot was scheduled to take place the next day. All four of us were up until 6:00 a.m. the next morning putting the finishing touches on it. We left Stockton at 7:00 am and rolled into L. A. at 1:00 pm for the photo shoot. That was one long day! But it was worth it! You can see the results of our trip in the September, 1997 issue of Mustangs & Fords Magazine. From the beginning, the whole idea behind the Ronster was to create a kit that other car enthusiast could use to build a Mustang Roadster. And I wanted to make the Ronster kit not only affordable, but something that would inspire the creativity in everyone who ever wanted a resto-mod of their own. At this point, a limited number of Ronster kits will be available and plans are for the kit to include the chassis strengthening kit, the tonneau cover, a laser cut plate to fill the gap created in the windshield frame when the top is cut off, and the other attaching hardware necessary to install the kit. This kit should retail in the $1400 to $1600 range. Each Ronster Kit will come with a numbered dash plaque and will be registered at Mustangs Plus. Hopefully, you will go wild with your own ideas about fiberglass, engines, wheels, stereos, and the like. I look forward to seeing the wide variety of cars all of you will come up with by starting with the Ronster Kit. Remember, if you re in the area, stop by our show room and see the Ronster in person. In addition to the Ronster, we generally have our 65 fastback track car, the Hardtop Retractable and other vintage Mustangs on display that we ve built through out the years. - In Appreciation To - American Racing - 17 x 8 Wheels B.F. 5 The Ronster s Day Out by Don Tellyer People are always asking us if we ever drive the Ronster. Well, as these pictures show, it does get a little road time now and then. We changed the cars around in the showrooms recently, and while the cool Ronster was out of the building, Ron got the itch to take it out for a little spin. I tagged along and shot a few photos of Ron s little half-hour excursion. With its newly painted and installed R2S hood, the Ronster practically screamed, Drive Me! 2 On the road! Knowing that Ron is a racer at heart, you shouldn t be surprised that the fi rst thing he did was make a beeline for the nearest windy road, located about a mile or so from the shop It was a great day for a drive, too. Just one more stoplight to go and we re home free. 4 Finally, a stretch of open road. Ron put the pedal down and the Ronster through its paces. 7 It s 85, sunny and breezy. Does it get any better than cruising in an open top roadster? 10 This car looks great from any angle! 5 Jammin down Ijams road. Hey, I m not making it up. That s the real name of the road. 8 Did we mention that we weren t the only Mustang on the road? This one gave us a thumbs-up as they passed by! 11 We weren t the only Mustang on the road. Our suspension components really keep this machine running fl at through the corners! Even the boss can t play all day! A quick, if slightly illegal, U-turn, and back to the stable! So, as you can see, while it may not be a daily driver, the Ronster does get to get out and run now and then. If you re ever in town, please, stop by and check it out. Who, knows? Maybe Ron will be moving the cars... ORDER TOLL FREE! 84 Ronster Kits
