February will probably turn out to be one of the busiest of It started with a regular club meeting, then the Heritage Show the following weekend. The next weekend after that was take-down day at the mall and the weekend after that a Sunday Build. Illness prevented me from attending the February meeting, so Colin Kunkel stepped in to take photographs of models on the tables and collect information. This year SMAS had five participants for the Heritage Show, displaying most of the model types we build. The major exception was military vehicles which was unfortunate as the younger spectators always seem to exclaim army tanks (out loud). Lots of the information leaflets were picked up, indicating many people have family modellers not aware of SMAS. Aside from spreading the word, quite often we are approached about kits/books/magazines for which people are looking for a good home. This time four people approached us about taking various items, many of which sounded quite interesting. Hopefully something will come out of those enquiries. As usual the mall show came out a lot quicker than it went into the galleries. Also putting everything back into storage was a lot faster thanks to all who stayed to help before we went to lunch. Already we are looking at 2017 and being optimistic that the mall will not undergo changes. A request has been put in to get five galleries for next year and a time slot after Easter. Going later in the year should ensure better weather and will avoid conflicts with other events. Two automotive subjects have been proposed for display on the white cubes. One is for Concept Cars and the other Indy Cars, the latter including IRL cars of course. Early days yet but from experience the sooner a start is made the better. One thing that was really lacking this year was information labels, a topic CLUB MEMBER DISCOUNTS...Continued on page 3 Ph: info@expresshobbies.com Web: th Street East Saskatoon, SK S7K 0S9 10% Ph: mailorder@group2hobbies.com Web: P.O. 3 ...Continued from page 2 that needs to be addressed. In some cases, such as Dave s battleships, there are I.D, plaques in place, but much of the display was bare on that point. The new location for Sunday Builds is proving popular, congratulations to President Brad for his selection. Note that the session in May will take place on the 15 th one week earlier than usual. One thing I like about the room is the hard floor with no carpet into which parts can burrow when they are dropped, also the good lighting. OK, that s two things. So two things I like about the place as well as plenty of parking spaces.. so three things.enough Monty Python, back to the workbench. - Mike Reid PARSONS PROJECT No.1 1/32 nd Scale Focke Wulf Ta154 in Resin (Editor s Note: as promised here is some background on the model that was shown at the January meeting, so over to Chris). I am apparently a linear thinker, much as I hate to admit it. I made the mistake (actually many mistakes) of thinking I could build this model similar to a plastic model, I mean I know there are different glues and special methods in assembly etc. The first issue I had was removing parts from the resin sheets for cleanup all at once and all together. That is the technique I use for regular plastic kits. Whether that is the best way resin kit I am not sure. But quite likely it may have taken less time re-cleaning parts I had earlier removed and primed and left on my bench (plastic model thinking). Apparently resin dust (yes I was wet-sanding) stays in the atmosphere in a hobby room and finds its way back down and on to primed parts days later. I have tried to learn from that experience and wash/wipe any parts before more painting work. Even then I think my airbrush may be spraying resin dust just so it isn t left out. In spite of all that stuff going on I came to the point of applying colour to the model. I primed the model with Alclad (grey) primer and micro filler. That s the actual name of the product. The overall colour RLM 74 lichtgrau (light blue-grey) is Testors Modelmaster Acryl paint, the RLM 75 Grauviolet is Tamiya acrylic. The whole thing was clear varnished with Valejo gloss varnish for decalling (which didn t help at all) then Valejo semi gloss (satin) varnish to finish. All paints thinned with that company s proprietary paint thinner. The lead weight supplied in the kit was just a shade light to keep it on its nose wheel. The fix was to I cut the nose oleo down to a slightly more loaded appearance, then it tipped onto its nose wheel. - Chris Parsons 3

5 PARSONS PROJECT No.2 HPH Models Messerschmitt Me410 in 1/32 nd Scale (A Peek-in-the-Box as I begin building...?) OK the instructions (supplied on CD) state that the fuselage and main wings are glass- fibre...obviously not the stuff I used to patch the bottom of my boat with (never mind, that s a long story.) This stuff must be much finer if glass matting is involved as the finish is incredibly smooth. Included in the kit are Eduard photo-etch brass detail components, metal legs inside the resin landing gear, incredibly clear (resin cast) canopies, laser cut fabric seat belts with photo-etch buckles (I can imagine the frustration assembling them already, maybe I ll outsource the labour to Dave DeBack) and die cut masks for the canopies. This kit also includes traditional decals...i can t wait to ruin them. After that is a mountain, OK more like a big mole hill, of resin...then a chocolate. These kits supply everything but the ride to the asylum. So onto the kit; the shiny spots on some pieces can be either mould release or drool... probably drool. I have a day or two of removing parts from the pour stubs/ resin puddles, then some minor repairs of the inevitable breakage. After that, work on the cockpit can begin by installing the photo-etch (yuck spit) detailing parts. I have come to realize my weaknesses when it comes to modelling; these are photo-etch and decals, sometimes basic assembly, sanding and finishing could use some finesse, gluing and painting could use a little work too...and following instructions are beyond my abilities...so basically when I finish a model and it looks anything like the picture on the box top I m quite happy and usually a little surprised. - Chris Parsons 5
