4 1 Introduction There have been a number of instances where the 10A fuse protecting the actuator on Eclipse circuit breakers has operated. 2 Scope This document relates to all Hawker Siddeley Eclipse switchgear. 3 Description The Hawker Siddeley Eclipse switchgear uses a magnetic actuator to open and close the circuit breaker. This actuator draws a high current pulse for a short time; the closing current is higher than the opening current. In order to protect this actuator a 10A fuse is fitted to each panel. There have been a number of occasions when these fuses have operated although the actuator circuit is healthy. When this happens the circuit breaker cannot be closed, and cannot be opened electrically. A trip circuit faulty alarm is generated. The actuator fuses are 10A FUSELINK NIT-10HS. There is one manufacturer of these fuses: EATON These fuses have different characteristics; the Cooper-Bussmann fuses will operate faster than the GE fuses, and are therefore more likely to operate in error. Labels are being fitted to all Eclipse switchboards advising operators that GE fuses must be used. This type of fuse is available in UK Power Networks stores under stock code 11148B FUSELINK NIT-10HS. 5 4 Actions Required 4.1 Site Staff In the event of a trip circuit faulty alarm: 1. Check the Actuator supply fuse. 2. If the fuse has operated replace the fuse. 3. Perform at least two trip and close sequences (the circuit breaker can be operated with the disconnector open). 4.2 Network Operations Ensure EATON are obtained and kept as spares in all substations with Eclipse switchgear. Ensure only FUSELINK NIT-10HS are used as replacements. 4.3 Supply Chain Ensure that FUSELINK NIT-10HS 10A fuses are kept in stores. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 5 of 5
