2 2 SPN 5927/FMI 2 - GHG14 2 SPN 5927/FMI 2 - GHG14 This diagnostic is typically Water Pump Limp Home Mode. This fault can be caused by: Coolant temperature in high Coolant temperature out Intake temperature high Engine protection mode 1. Check for multiple codes. a. If fault codes SPN 110/FMI (any) or SPN 1636/FMI (any) are also present, repair those faults first. b. If fault codes SPN 110/FMI (any) or SPN 1636/FMI (any) are not present, Go to step With engine cold, compare coolant inlet and coolant outlet temperatures. Are the temperatures within C (25 F) of each other? a. Yes; Go to step 3. b. No; Check coolant sensor resistance, refer to chart for specifications, replace sensor which is out of range. 3. Check for coolant loss. 4. Check thermostat operation. 5. Check for blockage in radiator and charge air cooler. 6. Check fan belt condition (slippage). 7. Check for proper location of fan shroud. 8. Check for proper radiator hose condition (no collapsed hoses). 9. Check for proper viscous fan operation. 10. Are any cooling system issues present? a. Yes, repair cooling system issues first. b. No, Go to step 11. WARNING: ENGINE EXHAUST (i)(eov34) To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated area. Engine exhaust is toxic. WARNING: PERSONAL INJURY To avoid injury before starting and running the engine, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, parking brake is set, and the wheels are blocked. 11. Start engine and bring to operating temperature 85 C (185 F). 12. Does engine reach operating temperature 85 C (185 F)? a. Yes, Go to step 13. b. No, service the engine cooling system thermostat. Refer to section "Removal of the Engine Coolant Thermostat and Seal" 13. Shut engine OFF (key OFF, engine OFF). 14. Disconnect inlet and outlet coolant sensors. 15. Inspect inlet and outlet coolant sensors harness connectors for bent, spread or corroded pins. a. If pin damage is found, repair as necessary. b. If no pin damage is found Go to step Check coolant sensor resistance, refer to chart for specifications, replace sensor which is out of range. 4 All information subject to change without notice. 4 3 SPN 5927/FMI 7 - GHG14 3 SPN 5927/FMI 7 - GHG14 This diagnostic is typically Water Pump Mechanical Defect Detected This fault can be caused by: Water pump speed less than commanded threshold Coolant temperature in high Coolant temperature out Intake temperature high Engine protection mode 1. Check for multiple codes. a. If any other fault codes are also present, repair those faults first. b. If only SPN 5927/FMI 7 is present, Go to step With engine cold, compare coolant inlet and coolant outlet temperatures. Are the temperatures within C (25 F) of each other? a. Yes; Go to step 3. b. No; Check coolant sensor resistance, refer to chart for specifications, replace sensor which is out of range. Table 2. Yes, If the fault is still active obtain a log file of active code, note the measurements in all steps and contact the Detroit Customer Support Center at for further instruction. b. No, Go to step Turn the ignition OFF (key OFF, engine OFF). 18. Disconnect the water pump harness connector. 19. Disconnect the MCM pin connector. 20. Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector (engine harness side). a. If the resistance is less than 10K ohms, repair the short between pins 1 and 2 of the water pump harness connector and MCM2.1 pins 107 and 50. b. If the resistance is greater than 10K ohms, Go to step Measure the resistance between pin 2 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and pin 107 of the MCM pin connector. a. If the resistance is greater than 3 ohms, repair the wire between pin 2 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and pin 107 of the MCM pin connector. b. If the resistance is less than 3 ohms, Go to step Measure the resistance between pin 1 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and pin 50 of the MCM pin connector. a. If the resistance is greater than 3 ohms, repair the wire between pin 1 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and pin 50 of the MCM pin connector. b. If the resistance is less than 3 ohms, Go to step Connect the MCM pin connector. 24. Turn the ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF). 25. Measure the voltage between pin 3 on the harness side of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and ground. a. If the voltage is greater than 5.5 volts, repair the short to battery between pin 3 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and pin 82 of the Motor Control Module (MCM2.1) 120-pin connector. b. If the voltage is less than 5 volts, repair the open wire between pin 3 of the water pump speed sensor harness connector and pin 82 of the Motor Control Module (MCM2.1) 120-pin connector. 26. Clear faults and verify repairs. If the fault is still active, obtain a log file of active code, note the measurements in all steps and contact the Detroit Customer Support Center at for further instruction.
