2 16 Speed HeadstfJck Sixteen geared spindle speeds are provided in order that the increments between successive speeds be held to a desirable minimum, while obtaining a high over-all ratio of fifty to one from highest to lowest speed. Since all sixteen spindle speeds are obtained from a single speed motor, the full horsepower is available at every speed. Three speed ranges are optionali namely, 31 to 1550 R.P.M., or 36 to 1800 R.P.M., or 40 to 2000 R.P.M. An electric double multiple disc clutch and an electric multiple disc brake effortlessly and instantaneously effect the Stop-Start-Reverse of the spindle, controlled by a single lever. Both units are self-adjusting. The Preselector dial calculator and handle are both mounted low in the headstock and close to the operator. Spindle Speed Changes are made quietly and automatically by means of a convenient trip lever without disengaging the headstock clutch, in an elapsed time of less than two seconds. Headstock controls, as well as those for certain other machine functions, have been grouped together for most efficient operator handling. All hydraulic gear shifting mechanism is selfcontained in one manifolded bracket inside the headstock, thus eliminating piping and assuring ease of maintenance. All headstock gears are of alloy steel; flame hardened, and precision finished after cutting. Higher speed gears have helical teeth for quieter, smoother performance. Headstock shafts are alloy steel, heat treated, ground-in-spline, of large diameter and short span. - All headstock bearings, including the clutch bearings, are of anti-friction type. The spindle is mounted in adjustable precision tapered roller bearings. All rotating assemblies are statically and dynamically balanced. No clutches are located on the spindle and no gears revolve on the spindle. Cool, filtered lubricating oil is pumped to all headstock bearings, gears, and clutches from a separate reservoir in the head-end leg. A totally enclosed, fan cqoled motor is directly flange mounted to the end of the headstock. Elimination of all belts, pulleys and idlers increases efficiency, and reduces maintenance. Chip Pan, Sump, and CfJfJ!ant Pump The coolant sump is located in the chip pan at the headstock end of the machine, and is well guarded from falling chips. The opposite end of the chip pan has a low angle rim to facilitate removal of chips. An impeller type coolant pump with integral motor drive is mounted directly to the coolant sump cover, and controlled by an independent push button switch mounted at the Front of the headstock.

3 Integrally Cast HeadstfJck and Bed Since the bed and headstock are cast in one piece, permanent alignment of spindle with bed ways is assured. Diagonal ribbing extends uninterruptedly from below the headstock to the opposite end of the bed, tying the heavy bed walls together throughout their entire length. This design provides ample opening for chip disposal together with the utmost rigidity of head and bed. Headstock has heavy walls extending well above the spindle, and extensive integral ribbing for maximum rigidity. The heavy, flat, headstock cover, which contains no operating or control mechanism, is closely bolted to both the headstock rim and center ribbing, contributing added rigidity to the headstock. The solid alloy steel, replaceable bed ways are hardened to Rockwell C 58 and precision ground, then superfinished for frictionless travel of carriage plus long and accurate life. They are rigidly bolted to the bed with large, closely spaced alloy steel studs. Both aprons are fully enclosed and effectively sealed to prevent the entrance of cutting coolant. Oil bath lubrication eliminates the grease gun, thus conserving all the operator's time for productive work. PfJW~ CfJmpact Carriage and Saddle AprfJns The aprons provide six feed changes in geometric progression for the cross and longitudinal travel of the cross slide, and for the hexagon turret slide. By a convenient lever at the head end gear train bracket, all feeds in each apron may be reduced to one half, thus making available twelve quick feed changes for each tool station. All feed changes in each apron are by means of a single lever and are easily read on a large rotating dial. Feeds are engaged by new "easy action" hand levers and are disengaged either by the same hand levers or, optionally, through adjustable stop screws and adjustable stop dogs. Powerful positive tooth clutches in each apron assure easy engagement and eliminate any slippage under heaviest cuts. 4 Rigid Turret Slide Qhd SQddle Twelve quick feed changes are provided for the hexagon turret slide. Turret slide has ample weight and depth, also a long continuous bearing in the saddle, in order to reduce deflection when fully extended. The turret slide travels on hardened and ground replaceable alloy steel ways in the saddle. It is guided between double, hardened, ground, and lapped alloy steel gibs on each side, and held by thick hardened and ground steel top caps. The cantilever saddle construction provides a longer bearing of slide in saddle without restricting the longitudinal travel of the cross slide carriagei also reduces the overhang of the slide from the saddle when the turre.t is dose to the cross slide. The hexagon turret revolves on a large, 4 inch diameter, precision tapered roller bearing which is mounted directly on an integral hub of the turret. Turret is indexed by means of a hardened steel ratchet ring having six integral indexing lugs. Thus all indexing pins are eliminated. The turret is held Firmly to its seat by a large diameter automatic damp ring which is self-compensating. Clamping force may be regulated by a convenient adjusting screw. The heavy-duty square turret features a hardened and ground circular bearing seat of larger diameter enclosed by a protective skirt. Instead of conventional indexing pins, a hardened steel index plate is employed having four integrally machined index lugs. The tool seats are hardened. Improved accuracy assures repetitive indexing to within a few ten thousandths of an inch. A single lever on the apron provides for lubrication of carriage and cross slide bearings as well as the cross slide screw and nut. The new bar feed stand is independently floor mounted and not supported in any way by the machine. s of At a touch of the handy control lever, the collet chuck opens and the bar advances a predetermined length. A second touch of the same lever closes the collet chuck and returns the bar feed head. The entire cycle takes less than two seconds. The holding power of the hydraulic collet chuck is sufficient for the heaviest cuts the tools can take. A built-in bar stock stop makes available one extra turret face for additional tooling. The bar stock is carried in a ball bearing revolving chuck which slides on two large diameter support bars. After a new length of bar stock is inserted in this chuck, no further handling is required until the first length is used up. The collet chuck may be operated without the bar feed if desired. C(Jrri(Jge Taper Attachment Can be quickly engaged or disengaged by a short motion of a lever at the front of the carriage. It will turn tapers up to 4 11 per foot and 8 11 long with cutters in the square turret as well as in the rear tool post. The cross feed nut has means for slack elimination and wear compensation.
