No gears revolve on the spindle and no plain bearings are employed in this headstock. All head gears and multiple spline shafts are of high tensile heat treated alloy steel. The redesigned headstock is of the dry sump type with a deep oil reservoir well below the gear level to prevent gears from splashing and thus raising temperature of the oil. All headstock bearings and gears are lubricated by force feed. The powerful forward and reverse multiple disc clutches with alternating hardened steel and bronze discs are lubricated by forcing filtered oil through the center of the shaft. This prevents the formation of burnt oil deposits. THE UNIVERSAL CROSS SLIDE CARRIAGE has nine selective, power reversible cross and longitudinal feeds. THE NO. 5 COLLET CHUCK is hand operated (Optional on the No. 7). Greater ease of adjustment for diameter of stock and tightness of grip has been attained by a new design of finger holder. The novel engineering principle embodied in the wedge and finger design results in a more forceful grip coupled with greater ease of operation. The elastic grip compensates automatically for minor variations in the diameter of the bar. The precision master collet has the tapered nose, the bore and the rear end pilot ground for maximum accuracy. THE BAR FEED works in synchrony with the collet chuck. Hydraulic power advances the stock through the collet on the No. 7, while the No. 5 is hand operated (Optional on the No. 7). Double bars afford a rigid support for the ball bearing mounted two jaw universal chuck which grips the bar concentric with the spindle bore. THE THREAD CHASING ATTACHMENT will cut one pitch of thread with each leader and cover a range from 4 to 20 T.P.I. By means of change gears a leader will cut twice and four times its own number of threads per inch. The range thus. covered is from 4 to 40 T.P.I. Threading close up to a shoulder or into a bli~;~d hole becomes easy with the quick acting automatic knockout. The follower can be disengaged by any one of the six adjustable longitudinal carriage stops. THE CROSS SLIDE TAPER ATTACHMENT turns tapers up to 3 " per foot by 8 " long. Mounted directly on the rear of the cross slide it can be easily applied to a machine in the customer's own plant. The full length safety tube which encloses and supports the bar swings forward at the head end for easy loading. The two pedestals serve also as a storage rack. THE STEADY REST mounts directly on the bedways. A right and left hand screw opens and closes the front and rear slides. The four rollers are mounted on needle bearings. THE TURRET LEADING ATTACHMENT is simple in operation. A short forward pull on the lever will engage the follower and the leader. They can be disengaged either automatically by an adjustable stop screw or manually. Each leader will cut twice and four times its own number of threads per inch by means of change gears in the rear end gear train. The range covers from 4 to 40 threads per inch. THE CARRIAGE TAPER ATTACHMENT, of improved design, can be quickly engaged or disengaged fro11;1 turning taper or straight by a short motion of a lever at the front of the saddle. It will turn tapers up to 3 " per foot and 8 " long with cutters in the square turret as well as in the rear tool post. The cross feed nut has means for slack elimination and wear compensation. This unit must be attached to the machine at the factory.
