2 Objective OBJECTIVE The Davis Razor is designed for precise cutting of the oil sac as well as high efficiency, with higher line speeds in mind. What is a Davis Razor Oil Sac Cutter General: The Davis Razor Oil Sac Cutter has been developed to function automatically in an evisceration line of a poultry-processing plant. The machine will cut the oil sac off the birds eliminating people and rework. When installed the machine is integrated with the overhead conveyor that links all machines in the line. The overhead conveyor also drives the oil sac cutter by means of the trolley chain. The Davis Razor oil sac cutter consists of a (1) overhead drive wheel,(2) a frame (3)cuter bar(4) cutter chain(5)guide bars. The machine is of a particularly simple design and has relatively few moving parts so that long economic life is guaranteed and maintenance is reduced to a minimum. 3 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Davis Razor Oil Sac Cutter is available in a right hand and left-hand configuration. Looking from top of the machine, a right-hand machine will have a clockwise rotation and a left-hand machine will have a counterclockwise rotation. Our machine is designed to accurately cut the oil sac off of a bird with its unique cutting action. As the bird enters the machine a guide position the tail to a cutter bar as chain turning with the line helps force the tail across a blade. The bird travels past this blade, as the chain assist and the oil sac is removed and the bird exits the machine. Davis Poultry Equipment, Inc 3

6 General Safety Precautions The Davis Poultry Equipment Inc. Razor Oil Sac Cutter was designed with safety in mind. However, as with any operating machinery, certain safety precautions should be observed. Before operating this machinery read, understand, and practice the operating instruction found in this manual. Know the limitations and hazards associated with this machine. 1. Lock out Tag out the power source before servicing this machine. Follow OSHA regulations when doing any and all maintenance on this machine. 2. Keep hands out of this machine while it is in operation. 3. Wear eye safety equipment when servicing this machine. 4. Do not stand, climb, or lean over the machine is operating. 5. Never attempt to remove objects or make adjustments while machine is in operation. 6. The area around the machine should be designed so inadvertent contact with any moving parts is not possible. Davis Poultry Equipment, Inc. 6

8 INSTALLATION REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION The following is required for installation of the DAVIS RAZOR OIL SAC CUTTER Supply Lines: 1. Water: 1/2 inch piping with maintainable pressure of 60 PSI. SET-UP The machine must be installed according to the layout drawings provided by Davis Poultry Equipment, Inc. All applicable codes in your area must be adhered to in the installation. Check shackle assembly. bent shackles and significant deviations in shackle length can cause breakdowns and serious damage.. Bird Flipper a bird flipper is recommended to keep bird presentation uniform Davis Poultry Equipment, Inc. 8

9 Initial Adjustments 1) After the machine has been installed use the shackle guide bar to push bottom of the shackle 2 inches away from where the machine will operate. See Figure 1 Figure 1 2) Set the machine parallel to the overhead track.see Figure 2 Figure 2 3) The timing of the machine must be set so that the feed blade is moving in front of the trailing stirrup of the shackle. 10 4) The machine should be tilted toward the shackle by loosening the two 12mm bolts on the swivel bracket. Then adjust the threaded rod that is directly above the swivel bracket until the top of the sprocket is 20 degrees or 6 3/8 between the frame the sprocket is mounted on and the straight part of the swivel. See Figure 4 Figure 4 5) Adjust the cutter bar so that it is touching the bottom of the feed blade attached to the chain Caution must be exercised when doing this adjustment. Serious damage can occur to the machine if strict attention and care is not adhered to. The cutter bar should be around 3/16 away from the guide on the feed blade. 11 Operating Procedures Some slight modifications to the initial settings described on page 6 may be required when a new machine is first put into operation. Adjustments may also be required from time to time because of large changes in the size of birds. Before operation, a final inspection should be made to see that: 1. All adjustments have been made. 2. All nuts and bolts are tight. 3. The machine is clear of all tools and other objects. Product Requirements Product requirements for operation are as follows: proper hanging: with both legs in one shackle one leg in each shackle slot; the tarsal joints must be at the bottom of the shackle slots all shackles must carry product, resulting in a smooth product in feed into the machine Operation The purchaser / user has a duty to become familiar with the operatives, cleaning and maintenance staff with the instructions given in this manual, it is possible to come within reach of danger zones. 12 Maintenance Daily Refer to page 6 Before Proceeding 1. Check spray nozzles for blockages. 2. Visually inspect the machine for any damages or broken parts. 4. Lubricate chain and sprockets with USDA approved lubricant. Weekly 1. Grease all bearings on the machine. 2. Check for excessive wear on cutter bar. 3. Check for excessive wear on feed blade attached to chain. 5. Check all bolts and set screws for tightness. 6. Check guide bar tightness. 7. Grease main shaft grease fittings. 13 CLEANING Clean up should begin immediately! Any delay will only increase the difficulty and length of time for clean up. Machine should be washed down at the end of each shift using high pressure, U.S.D.A. approved detergent, hot water and rinsed thoroughly. Failure to rinse thoroughly can result in unnecessary deterioration of parts. All units should be sanitized in compliance with USDA specifications. Any and all grease should be kept off of any area that may come close to being in contact with birds. Davis Poultry Equipment, Inc. 13

14 TROUBLE SHOOTING Some adjustments may be necessary after the initial setup instructions have been followed. The two aluminum adjusting nuts on the top of the guides are what will be adjusted the most. Leaving too much yellow on the end of the tail Leaving fragments hanging Leaving oil bags 1) Make sure the tail is pushed back into the cutter bar, by adjusting the outside guide bar. 2) Adjust the hold down guide bar down to push the tail into the cutter bar 3) Check shackle to feed blade timing 1) Check shackle to feed blade timing 2) Make sure the cutter bar is clean 3) Make sure the tail is pushed into the cutter bar 4) Adjust the top guide bar down to push the tail into the cutter bar 1) Check shackle to feed blade timing. 2) Make sure tail is feeding into the cutter bar. 3) Check height of the machine.
