1 PHPK TECHNOLOGIES INCORPORATED Cryogenic Valves Description PHPK Valves have been engineered, designed, and manufactured using the latest state-of-the-art technology. All pipe size valves have been fully computer analyzed and tested for a 00 psig, non-shock, WOG rating. 1 Unique design and manufacturing techniques enable PHPK to offer a variety of valve end connections including flanged, threaded, socket weld, and true buttweld (important for oxygen cleaning). In addition, the PHPK valve has no hidden cavities or crevices which can trap contaminates and cannot be cleaned by normal cleaning techniques. PHPK valves are designed with a fabrication controlled gas path (.00 to.00 ) allowing the use of simple warm O-ring bonnet seals which enable the valves to be operated in a totally inverted position with cryogen flowing through the valve. Manual valve (PV-0, PV-0) stem seals are engineered to allow replacement without total system shut-down or removal of the cryogen from the line. The valve seat seals are installed using a locking design (patent pending) which eliminates potential seat leakage from improperly installed seals or leakage paths open to the process stream. The use of state-of-the-art PHPK-specified, patented oxygen compatible plating techniques eliminates galling of critical components. All PHPK pipe-size valves are completely interchangeable between manual, remote (on/off), check valve, and remote flow control, without changing the valve body. All seals on vacuum jacketed valves can be replaced without disturbing the vacuum. Flow arrows and identification tags are cast into the valve bonnets 1/2 through 2 NPS to avoid confusion when the valves are vacuum jacketed. 1 Actual service pressure should be specified at time of purchase. /7 PHPK TECHNOLOGIES INC. 2 Design Features Body castings are lost wax investment cast ASTM-A-7, grade CF (0L) stainless steel and are 0% radiographed and zyglo inspected. All internal components and bonnet flanges are 00-series austenitic stainless steel. Bonnets are machined from forged aluminum bronze alloy. Seat seals are Neoflon PCTFE M-00H, (formerly Kel-F). Bonnet bolts are stainless steel, plated with a PHPK-specified, patented anti-galling material. Bonnet O-ring seals are Viton (Fluorocarbon Rubber). Bonnet seals are available in other materials for special applications and specifications. All materials used in the manufacture of PHPK valves are supplied with material certification and traceability, enabling PHPK to supply certified traceable valves for special applications. All valve components will be totally interchangeable between valve models and flow characteristics without replacing valve bodies. Castings will be lost wax investment cast, ASTM A-7, grade CF (0L) stainless steel, 0% radiograph and zyglo inspected. Valve component materials of construction will be 0L or 00-series stainless steel. Bonnets will be bronze alloy. Valve bonnets will have permanently cast or marked flow arrows when vacuum jacketed. All butt weld connections will be true butt weld with no closed-end cavities (such as socket welds which can not be easily cleaned for oxygen service). Weld connection between body extension tube and valve body casting will be a butt weld connection. Seal disk material will be Neoflon PCTFE M-00H (formerly Kel-F). Valve barrel and bonnet bolts will be plated with a PHPK-specified, patented nickel/teflon plating, which has been tested and approved for oxygen service. This plating, unlike chrome, does not chip or flake and provides a homogeneous surface to prevent galling. The valve design will provide a close-tolerance fit (appoximately 0.00 ) between the barrel and the body extension tube, allowing operation in any orientation, even upside down, while ensuring bonnet (Viton, fluorocarbon rubber, O-ring) seals remain warm when the valve is in cryogenic service. Stem packing will utilize dual Viton O-rings on the static and dynamic areas of the sealing surfaces. Bonnet seal will be a single Viton O-ring. Valves will have self-locking seat seals which do not require staking or welding for assembly or maintenance. All vacuum jacketed valves will be serviceable without breaking vacuums. 4 PHPK Cryogenic Globe Valves The flow characteristic of a control valve is considered to be the relationship between the flow rate through the valve and the valve travel as the travel is varied from 0 to 0%. Inherent flow characteristic refers to the characteristic observed with a constant pressure drop across the valve. The installed flow characteristic is obtained in service where the pressure drop varies with flow and other changes in the system. The purpose of characterizing control valves is to provide for a relatively uniform control loop stability over the expected range of the system operating conditions. To establish the flow characteristic needed to match a given system requires a dynamic analysis of the control loop. Analysis of the more common processes have been performed to establish some useful guidelines for the selection of the proper flow characteristic. The following is a look at the flow characteristics in use today: Discussion of Flow Characteristics The accompanying graph illustrates typical flow characteristic curves. The quick opening flow characteristic provides for maximum change in flow rate with minimal stem travel, while maintaining a fairly linear relationship. Additional increases in valve travel give sharply reduced changes in flow rate, and when the valve plug nears the wide open position, the change in flow rate approaches zero. In a control valve, the Quick Opening valve plug is used primarily for on-off service, but it is also suitable for many applications for which a Linear valve plug would normally be specified. PHPK models PV-0, PV-70, and CV (check valves) have quick opening plugs. The linear flow characteristic curve shows that the flow rate is directly proportional to the valve travel. This proportional relationship produces a characteristic with a constant slope so that with constant pressure drop, the valve gain will be the same at all flows. (Valve gain is the incremental change in flow rate produced by a corresponding incremental change in valve plug position. Gain is a function of valve size and configuration, system operating conditions and valve plug characteristic.) The Linear valve plug is commonly specified for liquid level control and for certain flow control applications requiring constant gain. PHPK models PV-0 and PV-0 are available with linear flow plugs. 5 In the equal percentage flow characteristic, equal increments of valve travel produce equal percentage changes in the existing flow. The change in flow rate is always proportional to the flow rate just before the change in valve plug position is made. When the valve plug is near its seat and the flow is small, the change in flow rate will be small; with a large flow, the change in flow rate will be large. Valve plugs with an equal percentage flow characteristic are generally used on pressure control applications, and on other applications where a large percentage of the pressure drop is normally absorbed by the system itself, with only a relatively small percentage available at the control valve. Equal percentage valve plugs should also be considered where highly varying pressure drop conditions can be expected. PHPK models PV-0 and PV-0 are available with equal percentage flow plugs. It should also be noted that although PHPK flow control valve models PV-0 and PV-0 have shut-off capability, a flow control valve should not be installed in a system as a shut-off valve. Globe Valve Sizing Information Note: The term C V is generally used by industry for comparing and calculating relative flow capacity in valves. 8 PHPK Positive Shut-Off Easy Maintenance Valve Seat Seals PHPK valve seats seals are designed to provide positive shut-off in cryogenic service while providing a seal that is easy to maintain and replace. The PHPK seat seal is a threaded self-locking design that requires no welding or staking and ensures a dead-ended flow path. 10 Quality Tested and Proven All PHPK valves are thoroughly tested and promise proven field performance. In addition to requirements for chemical and physical material certifications on all raw material and castings, additional performance tests are required by PHPK to guarantee the highest quality valves for cryogenic and vacuum service. In addition to raw material tests, operational and performance tests, PHPK valves have been proven as a performance leader by independent government tests. Conclusions The test article was subjeted to runs of cryogenic leak checks and 2 runs of ambient cycling for a total of 1,120 acutation cycles. The valve was found to be bubble-tight helium at -20 degrees F and 20 psig. The handwheel torque required for bubble-tight shut-off at a given inlet pressure was highly repeatable. 14 Stress Analyzed Complete and detailed stress analysis has been completed for the entire PHPK product line of cryogenic valves. Finite Element models of this product line have been developed and subjected to thorough analysis. Not only the valve bodies, but the barrel and extension tubes of all of these valves are included in the analysis. Results demonstrate that even the most critical local stresses in the valve bodies do not exceed 7% of the material Basic Allowable Stress at the design pressure of 00 psig. Further results demonstrate that the most critical local stress expected at the elevated test pressure of 00 psig (% of design pressure) is only 7% of the Yield Stress. Analysis Methodology Finite Element modeling and analysis have been developed and analyzed using a commercially marketed and widely used personal computer based system. All the analysis are linear (e.g., assume stress/strain remains in the elastic range and strains are relatively small). PHPK drawings have been modeled. All material properties have been taken from ASME Standards and incorporated in the computerbased Materials Library for analysis purposes. Conclusions Using contemporary Finite Element Analysis techniques, PHPK cryogenic valves have been subjected to thorough and critical stress analysis. Detailed stress distributions clearly indicate the areas of highest stress with even the most critical criteria demonstrating that all the valves meet the design criteria for the specified design pressure of 00 psig. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate that all of these valves will satisfactorily pass the 00 psig Pressure Test. 2-1 PHPK TECHNOLOGIES INC. 17 PHPK TECHNOLOGIES INCORPORATED TUBE SIZE CRYOGENIC GLOBE VALVES Description The PHPK tube-size cryogenic globe and angle valves are manufactured with the same attention to detail and quality as their pipe-size counterparts. All manual tube-size valves employ smooth acting acme threads and six-bolt bonnets. Remote valves are designed to accept a variety of actuators. All tube-size valves employ close tolerance barrel design, dualseal warm O-rings, and all of the unique plating and other PHPK design features of the pipe size valves. Although designed primarily for on/off service, the PHPK tube-size valves can be modified for flow control. All specialized testing and material controls applicable to other PHPK valves are not relaxed during the manufacture of the tube-size valve. 18 PHPK Tube-Size Valve Ordering Specification All cryogenic extended-stem globe valves will be PHPK model TV-11, TV-1 or TV- series. All valve components will be totally interchangeable between valve models TV-11 and TV-1. Castings will be lost wax investment cast, ASTM A-7, grade CF (0L) stainless steel, radiograph and zyglo inspected. Valve component materials of construction will be 0L or 00-series stainless steel. Bonnets will be bronze alloy. All butt weld connections will be true butt weld with no closed-end cavities (such as socket welds which can not be easily cleaned for oxygen service). Weld connection between body extension tube and valve body casting will be a butt weld connection (TV-11 and TV-1 only). Seal disk material will be Neoflon CTFE M-00H, (formerly Kel-F). Valve barrel and bonnet bolts will be plated with a PHPK-specified, patented nickel/teflon plating, which has been tested and approved for oxygen service. This plating, unlike chrome, does not chip or flake and provides a homogeneous surface to prevent galling. The valve design will provide a close-tolerance fit (approximately 0.00 ) between the barrel and the body extension tube, allowing operation in any orientation, even upside down, while ensuring bonnet (Viton, fluorocarbon rubber, O-ring) seals remain warm when the valve is in cryogenic service. Stem packing will utilize Viton O-rings on the static and dynamic areas of the sealing surfaces. Bonnet seal will be a single Viton O-ring. Valves will have one-piece seat seals which do not require staking or welding for assembly or maintenance. All vacuum jacketed valves will be serviceable without breaking vacuums. Stem packing in manual valves (TV-11) will be replaceable without removing the valves from service. 25 PHPK TECHNOLOGIES INCORPORATED Helium Service Valves Like our standard cryogenic globe valves, PHPK helium service valves have been engineered, designed, and analyzed to provide the optimum in service and reliability to the specialized helium market where low heat leak and high quality are standards. Patterned after the standard service valves, all PHPK helium valves utilize all butt welded design for wetted surfaces. End connections are available in a variety of configurations. Pipe-size valves have undergone complete computer analysis and have been tested for a 00 psig, non-shock, WOG rating 1. Tube-size valves are rated at psig, non-shock, WOG rating 1. The same unique PHPK designs, materials, and manufacturing techniques are applied to the HPV/HTV series as to the PV/TV series, including controlled close tolerance gas path (.00 to.00 ), allowing the use of simple, warm, mass spectrometer tight O-ring bonnet seals.
