12 CABLE JOINTING PRODUCTS Page G-12 Fully Tested Designed to meet requirements of BS6910 and CENELEC HD623 S1. Straight through and Branch Joints up to 300 sq mm All standard joints are supplied as a complete kit in a single carton. Each kit comprises a clear plastic shell, armour bond, a two-part polyurethane resin compound, gloves and jointing instructions. Connectors Joint kits can also be available with mechanical connectors or crimp sleeves. No special jointing skills Jointing is easy. Instructions are provided with each joint. RESIN FILLED PRODUCTS Working space There is a choice of snap-lock shell or larger shell to provide even more working space. No heat Joints are filled with a two part high quality polyurethane resin compound which is supplied in a two-section self contained, non perishable bag enclosing both resin and hardener ensuring there is no contact with skin. No further protection The resin compound completely penetrates and sets solid within a plastic shell which effectively insulates, seals and protects the joint. It will not subsequently soften. Shelf life. Shelf life of the resin is 2 years when stored in well ventilated dry conditions between degrees. Range of joints V cables with stranded copper or solid aluminium conductors up to 300sqmm PVC, XLPE of EPR insulated, PILC,PVC sheathed single wire armoured, aluminium strip armour or unarmoured.

42 FAULT INDICATORS Presentation Merlin Gerin Fault Indicators. The Flite 11X range are single phase Fault Passage Indicators for Overhead Lines. They are used in a group of 3 units at each location in order to allow for the detection of all possible fault configurations. It must be installed at well-defined strategic locations along the overhead line such as the start of a spur, Load Break switch location or at the radial arms of a junction. They mount directly on the live HV conductor through a specially designed spring operated clamp. They can be fitted live line via a hot stick fitted with a special adapter. Flashers When a fault occurs all the Flite 11X located between the sub station and the faulted section will trip and start flashing whilst the Flite 11Xs located beyond the faulted section will stay idle. The red LED flash is very powerful and is seen on a solid angle of vision. The Flite 11X Range of Products: FLITE 110-SA can be adjusted on site with its embedded DIPswitches. The light power of the Flite 110-SA is 40 lumen. 43 FAULT INDICATORS Flite 110-SA Detects both short-circuits and low current earth faults Self adaptation to network voltage and frequency Highly visible red flash light Indicates both permanent and transient faults User adjustable Very low power consumption Operation Upon installation on a live conductor, Flite 110-SA adjusts itself to power frequency and network voltage, then enables its fault detection function. Fault types: Flite 110-SA detects and indicates both earth faults and short-circuits between phases. In addition Flite 110-SA indicates both permanent and transient faults. Fault confirmation: to avoid false indications, faults are confirmed with a voltage dip occurring within 70 s after the threshold has been reached, which indicates that the upstream protection system has opened the circuit or started a reclosing cycle. Inrush restraint: upon line energising, an inrush restraint filter avoids possible false fault indication due to transformer magnetising currents. Reset: once a permanent fault has been detected and flashing has started, upon power return, Flite 110-SA waits for the MV to stabilize before resetting its flash, thus avoiding to stop flashing if the fault has not been cleared. Transient fault evolution: once Flite 110-SA is busy flashing for a transient fault, if a permanent fault occurs, the flash fault indication automatically changes from transient to permanent, thus helping the maintenance crew to treat fault priorities (first permanent faults, then transient ones). 44 FAULT INDICATORS Easergy Flite 116-SA and Easergy G200 Terminal Unit Application: fast location of faulted circuits The Flite 116-SA being a low power consumption unit, the G200 is used as a gateway to link the Flite 116-SA FPI's to any SCADA or W500 intranet maintenance software. The G200 unit is mounted on an overhead line pole close to the Flite 116 radio Fault Passage Indicator and communicates: On one side to the Flite 116 units, via a spread spectrum license free radio ( MHz) with low power consumption. On the other side to the distant acquisition system through a long range communication media: mobile telephone network (GSM/GPRS/CDMA) fixed telephone network (PSTN) radio (analog radio or radio modem) others through the local RS232 port. 45 CAT-1 Presentation CAT-1 TRANSMISSION LINE RATING SYSTEM* Increases transmission capability with maximum reliability No statistical risk-taking due to weather variability Eliminates clearance uncertainty caused by creep The CAT-1 system monitors the status of transmission lines by measuring the same parameters used to design the line. It measures the one parameter that is truly representative of the average condition of the conductor over an entire transmission line suspension section of several spans the tension. The Rating Principle Figure below represents a simplified example of a multispan transmission line suspension section. Because the suspension insulator strings at the suspension towers are free to swing longitudinally, the horizontal component H of the tension equalizes over the entire suspension section. Normally, the span shapes can be approximated as parabolas. Therefore, sags S1, S2 and S3 are all inversely proportional to the horizontal load H and directly proportional to the squares of the spans lengths L1, L2 and L3, regardless of conductor creep. By monitoring the conductor tension to verify that it remains above the minimum design limit, the design clearances at all points of the suspension section can be maintained. Horizontal tension remains constant over the entire suspension section (ruling span principle) CAT-1 OPERATING PHILOSOPHY The CAT-1 operating philosophy is based on recognising that weather variables are interrelated and probabilistic. The chances of both high temperature and low wind speed occurring along an entire suspension section are essentially zero. Thus, presently used ampacity limits can be increased by 15-25%. Although this causes a low finite risk, (typically less than 1%) of exceeding the limiting clearances, applying CAT-1 system will provide a reliable and accurate warning system for these potential clearance violations. Its compact and portable design allows linemen to operate wherever the repair is most efficiently handled - on the ground or up in a bucket. Ultimately, crews can be more timely and efficient in the splice-making process, reducing man-hours and costly transmission down-times. ConductaClean agitates a non-combustible detergent like solution to remove oxidation and grime from conductor strands, and can be adjusted for 1-, 3- or 6-minute cycles, depending upon the condition of the conductor.
