4 INTRODUCTION The ICS-41 intercom incorporates VOX technology, to provide the best possible audio response. VOX or voice activation keeps the microphones turned off until you speak, then the mic turns on and captures the speech. The ICS-41 can operate with up to 4 headsets, and has panel controls for volume, and VOX squelch level. The unit is small and light and requires no other mounting hardware other than the panel screws. DESCRIPTION The ICS-41 is housed in a high density plastic case, with a DB-15 connector at the rear end. The front face has two knobs, and a centre switch. The unit is supplied with the following parts: ICS-41 Intercom Unit ISC-41 Face Plate ICS-41 Drilling template ICS-41 Mounting Screws ICS-41 Installation and User manual

5 PANEL MOUNTING The installer should first decide where in the instrument panel to mount the intercom. Consider a location which allow the pilot to see the face plate and controls easily when in flight. A position close to the radio should also be considered, to keep the wiring harness to comfortable length. Match the drilling template to the face plate to ensure correct orientation. Fix the drilling template to the front face of the panel, and drill 5 x 3mm holes. Enlarge the 3 control holes to clear the retaining nuts and washers for the two knobs and the switch on the front face of the intercom. IMPORTANT Do NOT loosen the nuts retaining the knobs or switch, as they are NOT used to hold the intercom to the panel. Remove the collet knobs from the shafts of the knobs, and slide off the Face Plate. The collets are loosened by prying off the knob end caps, and loosening the screw hidden below. The knob should slide off easily. Remove the drilling template, and fit the intercom from the rear face of the panel. Install the Face Plate from the front side of the panel, and retain with the two M3 machine screws. Ensure to use the spring washers with the M3 machine screws. Reinstall the knobs on their shafts, and retain by tightening the collet screw, and refitting the end cap. Ensure the line marker on the end cap is in the correct place. The wiring harness is terminated in a DB-15 connector, as per the wiring diagram. The DB- 15 connector is retained in place with the thumb screws. The ICS-41 is design to operate with volts

The harness however should be secured to protect it from vibration. Both PTT lines must be wired. The pilot PTT will only trigger the pilot MIC, and co-pilot PTT will only trigger the co-pilot MIC. The intercom should be protected by a fuse or circuit breaker of 3-10 amp.

7 CONTROLS FUNCTIONS The ICS-41 has three simple controls. An ON/OFF switch, a volume knob, and a Squelch knob. 1 2 x M3 Mounting Screws 2 Volume Knob 3 ON/OFF Switch 4 Squelch Knob ON/OFF Switch The ON/OFF switch is located in the centre of the face plate, and operates ON in the up position. With the switch in the OFF position the pilot is still connected directly to the radio, and the co-pilot headphones are still directly connected to radio. The pilot PTT button is still connected directly to the radio. When set to the ON position, all headsets are connected to the intercom, with the mic in the VOX operating mode. The pilot and co-pilot PTT s are operational through the intercom. The pilot PTT will override the co-pilot PTT when the intercom is ON. When the student (co-pilot) is transmitting, the instructor (pilot) can still speak to the student over the intercom, without being heard over the radio transmission.

8 VOLUME Knob The volume knob adjusts the audio headphone volume. Turn the knob clockwise to increase, and counter clockwise to decrease. For most installations a mid range position with the marker line at the 12 O clock position is typical. SQULECH Knob The squelch allows the operator to adjust the mic sensitivity. Adjust the knob to the full counter clockwise position. The microphone should be active all of the time. By adjusting the knob in the clockwise direction the mic becomes less sensitive, until the mic is OFF unless spoken to. This is VOX operation. For most installations a mid range position with the marker line at the 12 O clock position is typical. For best VOX operation, the operator should always keep the microphone as close as possible to the mouth. If the operator continues to adjust the squelch in the clockwise direction, the VOX effect becomes more pronounced, and the operator needs to speak with a louder voice to turn the mic ON. At the extreme clockwise position the mic remains OFF at all times. In this position the mic can only be turned on by an external intercom PTT button (wired from pin 10 to ground off the DB-15 connector see wiring diagram). PTT Operation The ICS-41 intercom can be operated by a PTT button, wired from pin 10 to ground. With the squelch knob turned to the extreme clockwise position, the microphones are effectively off all of the time (ie no VOX operation). The microphones can be triggered on, by pressing the PTT button from pin 10. The microphones will stay live for approx 1-2 seconds after the PTT button is released. When the intercom PTT button is pressed, all microphones become live, and all parties can speak and be heard.
