Extensive reprogramming requirements will otherwise be necessary. WIRING HARNESSES WILL BE ELECTRICALLY ACTIVE. IT IS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE EXECUTING THESE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN SEVERE VEHICLE DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY, OR DEATH FROM ELECTRICAL SHOCK. Keep the ignition and radio powered OFF through the final test. A. Installation preparation 1. Read these installation instructions in their entirety before beginning. 2. Check to make sure the following relays and fuses are installed and install them if not: F1f21, 15-amp fuse located in the main fuse box (F1) in the engine compartment F1f10, 10-amp fuse located in the main fuse box (F1) in the engine compartment 3. Unpack and compare the installation kit contents against the Parts Information list on page Separate the operating guides and customer accessories and place them in the glove box or appropriate storage compartment. Note: For fiber optical handling instructions, refer to S-B-82.70/135B, D2B Fiber Optic Configuration and Version Coding. If installing the telephone, proceed to Section B. If installing the voice control module (VCM), proceed to Section F or G and H. 2 B. Installing the linear compensator 1. Remove the MCS (radio) control unit from the center dash and disconnect all cable connections (Figure 1). Refer to WIS: AR82.60-P-7502EA, Removing and installing radio 2. Remove the glove compartment (Figure 1). Refer to WIS: AR68.10-P-1400GI, Removing and installing glove compartment 3. Remove the passenger side lower dash panel (Figure 1). Refer to WIS: AR68.10-P-1520GI, Removing and installing cover below instrument panel (right) 4. Temporarily move the main harness running vertically along the right center dash support by accessing it from the glove compartment cavity side and carefully cutting away the wire tie (Figure 2 before), (Figure 3 after). 3 5. Secure the linear compensator to the bracket with three M4 nuts (Figure 4). Figure 4 legend: A ANTENNA jack B PORTABLE jack Figure 4 P Loosen the lower most 10-mm bolt securing the right center dash support to the dash frame enough to slide the compensator bracket leg between the bolt head and dash support bracket (A, Figure 5 [shows the compensator already installed]). 7. Orient the compensator bracket assembly into its mounting position through the glove box opening, positioning it vertically with the green 14-pole connector facing down. 8. Slide the bracket assembly mounting slot over the loosened 10-mm bolt (A, Figure 5) Figure 5 P Note: Make sure the two bracket supports (Figure 6) hang over the dash support bracket. 9. Secure the bracket assembly by tightening the 10-mm bolt. Figure 6 P T-I-82.70/ 186B June

4 10. Locate and expose the two coaxial cables in the MCS unit cavity (Figure 7). Note: Use an ohmmeter to identify the two coaxial cables and verify the correct routing mentioned in the following steps. 11. Connect the RF cable coming from the center console (A, Figure 7 the longer cable with white tape) to the linear compensator RF jack labeled PORTABLE and firmly hand tighten it (B, Figures 4 and 5). Note: The linear compensator RF jack labeled PORTABLE will be facing downward and cannot be read once the compensator is installed (B, Figure 4). 12. Connect the RF cable coming from the antenna (B, Figure 7 the shorter cable without tape) to the linear compensator jack labeled ANTENNA (A, Figure 4). 13. Use the supplied wire tie to secure the main harness separated in step 4 from the dash support. Figure 7 P T-I-82.70/ 186B June 2004

5 C. Installing the portable support electronics (PSE) module 1. Place the template on the inside of the right lower dash panel (Figure 8). Note: Be sure the back and right edges of the template are flush with the plastic panel, not the foam. Figure 8 P Follow the instructions on the template for marking and removing the foam and subsequent drilling of the PSE mounting holes (Figure 9). Note: Remove the foam by cutting it with a sharp razor knife, lifting up a corner of the adhesive film on the back, and then slowly peeling it away in one piece. DO NOT grasp and pull by the foam upper, as it will tear away leaving the adhesive behind. Figure 9 P Mount the PSE module to the bottom of the lower dash panel with four M4 x 6 machine screws. Note: The 25-pole D-connector should face the front of the vehicle (Figure 10). 4. Connect the 25-pole D-connector (A, Figure 10) and D2B fiber (B, Figure 10) to the PSE. Route the wiring harness as shown in Figure 10 and be sure to slide the cable clip of the dash panel between the vertical and horizontal seam of the foam. Note: Be sure the portion of the cable routed under the auxiliary power outlet is not under stress that would cause it to abrade against the outlet when installing the clip. 6 5. Reinstall the lower dash panel. Note: Do not stress the cables routing into the radio compartment and make sure they are unobstructed. 6. Locate the anchor hole for the cable clip (A, Figure 11) just below and to the left of the linear compensator (B, Figure 11). Figure 11 P Press the attached clip on the telephone cable harness into the anchor hole (A, Figure 11, Figure 12). Figure 12 P D. Making the connections 1. Connect the green 14-pole connector from the telephone harness to the green receptacle at the bottom of the linear compensator. 2. Connect the black 3-pole power connector from the telephone harness to the vehicle radio harness. 3. Connect the green 2-pole microphone connector from the telephone harness to the vehicle radio harness. 4. Connect the 1-pole ground connector from the telephone harness to the vehicle radio harness. 5. Connect the male RJ-45 connector from the vehicle radio harness to the Phone/VCS harness. 6. Connect the black 3-pole voice control switch to Phone/VCS harness. 7. Connect TEL-OUT fiber optic cable to the RADIO-IN fiber optic cable. 8. Connect TEL-IN fiber optic cable to the E-CALL-OUT fiber optic cable. NOTICE Handle fiber optics with care. 7 E Installing the antenna switch Remove the front passenger seat to expose the Tele Aid module bracket assembly (Figure 13). Refer to WIS: AR91.10-P-1000GH, Removing and installing front seats Unclip the Tele Aid speaker wire from the Tele Aid module bracket (Figure 13). Turn the Tele Aid module bracket upright (Figure 15). Mount the antenna switch to the Tele Aid module bracket with two 3.5-mm x 8.3-mm screws (A, Figure 15). Figure 13 P Disconnect the Tele Aid cable (A, Figure 14) from the antenna cable (B, Figure 14). Connect the Tele Aid cable (A, Figure 14) to the antenna switch jack labeled EMERGENCY (C, Figure 15). Connect the antenna cable (B, Figure 14) to the antenna switch jack labeled ANTENNA (B, Figure 15). Connect the cable coming from the radio cavity (C, Figure 14) to the antenna switch jack labeled COMPENSATOR/BOOSTER (E, Figure 15). 8 F. Installing the optional voice control module (VCM) 1. Proceed to Section I if not installing the optional VCM. 2. Cut two opposing-sided strips each (two fuzzy-sided strips and two non-fuzzy-sided strips) of Velco tape 90-mm in length. 3. Remove the paper backing on the adhesive side of the two fuzzy-sided strips and affix them to the underside of the VCM, positioning one 15-mm from the front edge and the other 15-mm from the rear edge. 4. Attach the mating non-fuzzy-sided Velco strips to the strips affixed to the VCM (Figure 16). Figure 16 P Proceed to Section G if the vehicle is not equipped with Parktronic. 6. Remove the instrument panel center section (Figure 17). Refer to WIS document AR68.10-P- 1030GH, Remove/install center section of instrument panel Note: It is not necessary to disconnect the instrument panel center section carefully let the panel rest to the right (Arrow, Figure 17). Figure 17 P Expose the 15-pole D-connector (A, Figure 18) and D2B connector (B, Figure 18) from within the lower cavity of the instrument panel center section and connect them to the VCM. 9 8. 9. Remove the paper backing on the adhesive side of the two Velco tape strips mated to those affixed to the underside of the VCM. Mount the VCM via the adhesive Velco tape strips atop the Parktronic control unit (Figure 19). NOTICE Handle fiber optics with care. The fibers must remain free of kinks, sharp bends, and abrasions. Figure 19 P G. Installing the VCM on vehicles without Parktronic 1. Expose the 15-pole D-connector (A, Figure 20) and D2B connector (B, Figure 20) from within the lower cavity of the instrument panel center section and connect them to the VCM. Figure 20 P Remove the paper backing on the adhesive side of the two Velco tape strips mated to those affixed to the underside of the VCM. 10 4. Mount and secure the VCM/mounting plate assembly lower cavity of the instrument panel center section (Figure 22). NOTICE Handle fiber optics with care. The fibers must remain free of kinks, sharp bends, and abrasions. Figure 22 P H. Connecting the telephone/vcs wiring harness 1. Return the Tele Aid module bracket to its mounting position. 2. Clip the Tele Aid speaker wire to the Tele Aid module bracket. 3. Reinstall the front passenger seat. 11 I Installing the phone cradle (V60) Open the lower storage box compartment of the center console and remove the upper compartment/lid assembly by removing the two screws (A, Figure 23 [screws not visible in photo see Figure 32]). Remove the lower storage box by removing the two plastic rivet pushpins at the bottom (B, Figure 23). Figure 23 P Locate the RJ-45 data cable connector (A, Figure 24) and mini-uhf connector (B, Figure 24) in the storage box cavity. 12 5. 6. Locate the storage box template and place it on the rear side of the storage box (Figure 26). Drill the 3.5-mm hole in the storage box where indicated on the template. Figure 26 P Turn the storage box bottom-side-up and cut out, or carefully knock out, the 19-mm perforated square (Figure 27). NOTICE Be careful not to crack the storage box when removing the square knockout. Figure 27 P Cut out or carefully knock out the 20-mm diameter circular knockout on the bottom of the upper compartment the storage box (A, Figure 28). 9. Drill two 4.5-mm holes at the center punch impressions on the underside of the upper compartment (B, Figure 28). 10. Measure and mark the upper compartment underside at the point where 15-mm from the left edge (D, Figure 28) and 30-mm from the rear edge (E, Figure 28) meet. 11. Drill a 3.5-mm hole at the measured mark (C, Figure 28) for the strain relief. Figure 28 P T-I-82.70/ 186B June 2004

13 12. Mount the V60 holder inside the upper compartment with the two screws supplied in the V60 cradle long-cord kit (Figure 29). Figure 29 P Insert the cradle coil-cord through the 20-mm diameter hole from the topside of the upper compartment (A, Figure 30). 14. Insert the coil-cord through the 19-mm square hole from the topside of the storage box (B, Figure 30). Figure 30 P Place the storage box and upper compartment near their installation point and connect the RJ-45 (A, Figure 31) and mini- UHF (B, Figure 31) connectors from the coilcord to the coaxial cable and RJ-45 data cable in the center console. 16. Partially insert the storage box into the center console cavity enough so the strain relief reaches its anchoring point. Figure 31 P T-I-82.70/ 186B June

14 17. Use a #8 x ½ pan head plastite, self-tapping screw to secure the coil-cord upper strain relief to the 3.5-mm hole in the underside of the upper compartment (A, Figure 32). 18. Use a #10 x ½ pan washer head, type AB, self-tapping screw to secure the coil-cord lower strain relief to the 3.5-mm hole in the rear of storage box (B, Figure 32). 19. Install two new plastic rivet pushpins (Part Number: A ) to secure the storage box. Note: DO NOT reuse the two previously removed plastic rivet pushpins. 20. Remove the protective backing from the adhesive side of the felt piece contained in the M-Class supplemental V60 completer kit and place it over the 19-mm square hole with protruding coil-cord. 21. Reinstall the upper compartment of the storage box. 22. Install the battery insert plate marked FOR USE WITH SLIM BATTERY when using the slim battery (500 mah) with the V60 telephone (Figure 33). 15 23. Install the battery insert plate marked FOR USE WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE BATTERY when using the high performance battery (800 mah) with the V60 telephone (Figure 34). Note: The embossed text on the installed battery insert plate must face up as in Figure 34. 16 J. Installing the push-to-talk (PTT) lever (only with the voice control option) 1. Remove the PTT lever switch plug on the steering column by carefully inserting a screwdriver between the plug and switch opening and prying away the plug (Figure 37). Insert the lever into the switch opening with the handle pointing up. 4. Apply steady inward pressure while gently rotating the lever toward you until it clicks into place (Figure 38). 17 K. Version coding and diagnostic testing 1. Connect Star Diagnosis (SDS) to the vehicle and perform the version coding outlined below: 2. Using path: Control units / Information and communication / D2B - COMAND, MCS, or Audio / Control unit adaptations / Read coding and change if necessary / Specified configuration D2B components Set the D2B ring configuration per the diagram on page Return to the D2B Functions menu. Using path: Actual values / Actual configuration of D2B components Verify the above version coding input (specified value) matches the actual configuration performed during installation (actual values). If a difference exists, disassemble, diagnose, and properly configure the ring. NOTICE DO NOT alter the configuration in the diagram on page 18 to match the vehicle configuration. Failure to have the configuration set as indicated in the diagram on page 18 will result in erroneous system operation and/or intermittent malfunctioning of some or all components. 4. Check the DTC memory of all installed components and the head unit. Investigated, identify, and correct the source of any present DTC(s). Then clear the DTC memory. Note: Powering up the newly installed system prior to version coding will set D2B ring configuration errors. Ignore these errors during the initial DTC check. If, after clearing the DTC(s), they return in the next step, a configuration error that must be located and corrected is present. 5. Perform a D2B system group test to confirm no new DTC(s) were set. 18 D2B Ring Configuration L Final assembly and function test Reinstall the MCS (radio) unit, glove compartment insert, and right lower dash panel. Program the telephone per S-B-82.70/179A, V60 Portable Telephone Programming. Verify proper telephone and voice control as applicable to installed equipment operation per the following checklist: Telephone Handset dialing is functioning Head unit dialing is functioning Handset incoming and outgoing call audio is clear Hands-free incoming and outgoing audio is clear Automatic memory download is functioning 1) 1) It may be necessary to store a test number in the telephone handset for this feature to operate. Stored numbers should be available for dialing from the head unit after automatic download.
