GENERAL The AuRACLE Engine Management System primary display provides a graphical representation of the following engine instrumentation: o Manifold Pressure (MAP) o RPM o Fuel Flow (FF) o Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT)* o Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) o Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) o Oil Pressure (Oil P) o Oil Temperature (Oil T) o Fuel Pressure (FP)* o Instrument Air Press/Vac (INST) o Compressor Discharge Temp. (CDT)* o Induction Air/Carburetor Temperature (IAT/CT)* o Outside Air Temperature (OAT) o Amps o Volts o Fuel Quantity o Computed Horsepower (HP) o Percent Horsepower (% HP) o Fuel Computer Functions *Optional These Indications are derived from solid-state sensors installed in the engine compartment and elsewhere. The AuRACLE is powered by the master bus through the (2) 5 amp circuit breakers. AuRACLE 2 of 19
The AuRACLE user interface is simple and intuitive. There are two knobs that may be turned in either direction or pushed in. These knobs function much like a mouse to select and acknowledge user choices. There is also a white Function Button. This Function Button may be pushed and released or it may be pushed in and held for three or more seconds to provide two different functions. The exact function of this pushbutton depends on the contents of the display. Ultra Electronics - Flightline Systems has kept the number of overloaded functions of this pushbutton to an absolute minimum to keep the user interface as intuitive as possible. There are also USB data ports on the AuRACLE. These data ports are not required for flight and are not described here. The use of the data port is described in the AuRACLE Pilot s Guide. There are several advanced functions of the AuRACLE that are not detailed here. For complete operation instructions please refer to the AuRACLE Pilot s Guide. Note: A copy of this Flight Manual Supplement must be kept aboard the aircraft at all times. For advanced functions see the AuRACLE Pilot s Guide AuRACLE 3 of 19
Limitations During the power up and screen self-tests, the system will display Wait for data prior to starting the engine and engine parameters are not available for display. The engine shall not be started prior to completion of AuRACLE hardware and software self-tests. Abnormal Procedures Note: Your AuRACLE engine management system monitors the sensor inputs with an Engine Interface Unit (EIU). In the event of an EIU failure, affected instruments will show a failure as follows: Needles on Round Dial instruments will disappear Instruments displayed as numeric Readouts will be displayed as three Amber dashes Bar Graphs will Disappear for affected cylinder inputs Pilot Response: For failure of single indicators, land as soon as practical and consult a Ultra Electronics - Flightline Systems Authorized Dealer If all indicators fail, check and/or cycle the circuit breaker for the system. If functionality is not restored, land as soon as practical and have maintenance facility AuRACLE 4 of 19
inspect the system and consult an Ultra Electronics - Flightline Systems Authorized Dealer. 1) If the screen is black: If a circuit breaker has tripped, wait 30 seconds then try resetting the circuit breaker, If the circuit breaker trips again consider the system inoperative. 2) If any parameter s digital display contains amber dashes, consider this function inoperative. WARNING: During the power up and screen self-tests, the system will display Please wait for data before starting engine and engine parameters are not available for display. It is required that the pilot wait until the hardware and software self-tests are completed prior to engine start. Normal Procedures The following illustration depicts how the AuRACLE system appears after the self-test phase (red screen, blue screen, green screen and the Ultra Electronics screen) has completed successfully. The AuRACLE is awaiting entry of the current fuel load. AuRACLE 5 of 19
There are three possible cases when for adding fuel: 1. If no fuel has been added or removed, simply press the left Knob to accept the current fuel load (64.2 Gal). 2. If the tanks have been topped off, rotate the left Knob to bring the blue highlight to the top box. Press the Knob. The border will turn red. Rotate the Knob to select the proper tanks full value (mains only, mains + tips). Press the Knob to de-select the box for editing. The border will turn white. Rotate the Knob to move the blue highlight to the Save & Return button. Press the Knob to finish. 3. If fuel has been added to the tanks but they have not been topped off, rotate the left Knob to bring the blue highlight to the middle box. AuRACLE 6 of 19
Press the Knob. A fuel entry sub-screen will pop-up. Turn the knob to select the digit to be edited. Push the knob and the border around the individual digit will turn red. Rotate the knob until the digit has been edited appropriately. Push the knob again and the border will turn white again. Select another digit if necessary by repeating the process. When the value is equal to the proper fuel load value (current load + fuel added), rotate the Knob to move the blue highlight to the Save & Return button. Press the Knob to finish. Note: Amber Dashes indicate that no reasonable sensor information is available. After the fuel load has been properly entered the unit is ready for operation and the primary display BOTH screen will appear: At this point the AuRACLE is in its normal operating mode on the Instrument display. Most of the display is intuitive and requires no explanation. Note: When using the airplane s engine controls to adjust RPM, MAP, or FF in reference to the indicator bars, best results are obtained by making final adjustments in small steps (vernier control is best) to avoid hunting-and-seeking behavior. AuRACLE 7 of 19
MAP Display Tachometer Fuel Flow Fuel Computer Current Display Engine Analyzer EGT: Blue CHT: Green ENGINE MANAGEMENT SCREEN The EGT (cyan bars) and CHT (green bars) numbers to the left of the Engine Analyzer display indicate the temperature of the Selected Cylinder (the cylinder number will be surrounded by a small white box). The unit will default to scan mode. AuRACLE 8 of 19
The selected cylinder will advance to the next cylinder after a short delay. If it is desired to observe a specific cylinder, push the Knob. If the currently selected cylinder is cylinder 1, this will cause the Box around the number 1 under the Engine Analyzer display to move to the number 2. The EGT and CHT numbers will now display the temperature of the cylinder 2. This process may be used to select any cylinder. Pushing and holding the Knob for three seconds will cause the analyzer to enter a scan mode where the selected cylinder changes automatically every few seconds. To exit the scan mode simply press the Knob. The Fuel Computer: displays the Fuel Remaining based on the fuel load at start-up and the total fuel consumed; and estimates the time remaining in the air based on the current fuel remaining and the current fuel flow. This differs from the Fuel Quantity indicator on the Engine Instrument Page which is derived from an actual analog input from the fuel tank sending units. If at any time the difference between the Fuel Remaining displayed by the Fuel Computer and the Fuel Level displayed on the Engine Instruments Page differs by an amount greater than defined in the % Diff Alarm page of the Fuel Quantity Setup menu, the Fuel Computer will be disabled and Amber dashed lines will be displayed in its fields. AuRACLE 9 of 19
WARNING: These functions are for reference only they depend on accurate initial fuel load information being entered at the start of the flight. Also, these functions do not relieve Pilot responsibility for fuel management. Rotating the Knob clockwise or counter-clockwise will change the displayed information. For instance rotating the Knob one click clockwise will result in the following screen being displayed: Hottest Cylinder EGT Trend Indicators TIT Note: the Current Display highlight has moved from BOTH to RIGHT ; and only the analyzer information from the Right engine is displayed. AuRACLE 10 of 19
The EGT and CHT numeric readouts work the same as they did on the BOTH display; except now they are below the Engine Analyzer. The Knobs function as it did on the BOTH display as well. Several useful features have been added to this larger Engine Analyzer display: 1. The AuRACLE continually identifies the Hottest Cylinder and displays its temperature. 2. The short-term change trend of each cylinder s EGT is displayed as an arrowhead (up or down); a steady indication is shown as a dash with no arrowhead. 3. Pushing the Function button causes the Engine analyzer display to enter a normalized EGT mode (see figure below). All EGT bars are normalized to a Relative Zero position at the center of the display and the scale resolution is greatly increased (+/- 150 F). This mode is very useful for cruising flight and magneto checks. To return to the basic Engine Analyzer mode press the function button again. AuRACLE 11 of 19
Relative Zero Rotating the Knob two clicks clockwise results in the following display: AuRACLE 12 of 19
This display adds some additional fuel information while maintaining display of all required engine operational information. This additional information includes: 1. Initial Fuel: This is the amount of fuel onboard after the pilot enters the data at power up. Reference the procedure above. 2. Fuel Used: The amount of fuel used since the start of the engine. 3. Fuel Eff (L &R): Estimated fuel efficiency, displayed in nautical miles per gallon. 4. Fuel at Dest: The amount of fuel estimated to be remaining at the final destination at the current consumption. 5. Time to Dest: Estimated flight-time to the final destination. WARNING: These functions are for reference only they depend on accurate initial fuel load information being entered at the start of the flight. Also, these functions do not relieve the Pilot of the responsibility for fuel management. Rotating the Knob one click clockwise results in the following display: AuRACLE 13 of 19
This display is the entry into the setup functions. For details on how to use these functions please see the AuRACLE Pilot s Guide. Additionally, this display shows the current Tachometer times (engine time above 1200 RPM) and the Tach times at the last oil change. Rotating the Knob two clicks clockwise will return to the BOTH display: ENGINE INSTRUMENT SCREEN The Engine Instrument Screen displays additional engine instrumentation for your aircraft engine. This page will display several instruments as standard 1- inch round dial displays as well as a left and right digital display of the remaining instruments, power computer, and fuel quantity. Fuel quantity is AuRACLE 14 of 19
displayed in bar graph format. Options are Left Main, Left Auxiliary, Right Main, and Right Auxiliary. Power Computer Digital Engine Instrument Display Round Dial Instrument Displays Left and Right Fuel Quantity CAUTION: The Power Computer is for reference only. If there is a difference between this indication and the value in the Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) the Pilot must rely on the value in the AFM. AuRACLE 15 of 19
Warning System Whenever a critical engine parameter exceeds its caution limit its numeric value will change to amber; if this value exceeds its warning limit its numeric value will change to red. If the parameter is presented on a bar graph, its bar will also change color. If this is a critical value, such as oil pressure, a large red bordered box with red message text will appear in the upper right-hand corner (see below). This alarm must be acknowledged by the pilot by pushing or rotating the Knob or pushing the Function button. If there are multiple alarms they appear one over the other. If sensor data for a particular engine parameter is lost or if the value being received is out of a sensible range: the numeric value will be replaced by amber AuRACLE 16 of 19
dashes; and the indicator bar or scale pointer will disappear. Display Dimmer The right knob of the control panel is the display dimmer control. This is in addition to the automatic brightness control triggered by the aircraft dimmer control circuitry. Rotate the knob clockwise to brighten the display and counter clockwise to dim the display. Reversionary Mode The reversionary mode can be entered under two conditions. The system display is made up of two entirely independent display systems with no single point failures; both systems monitor and communicate with the EIU. The communications are via a dual redundant CAN bus. Should one of the display systems cease communication, the other display will automatically initiate reversionary mode operation with the specified aforementioned display. The system will remain in reversionary mode until power is cycled or until communication with the other system is restored AND the pilot presses the reversionary call button for greater than three (seconds). In the event of just an LCD failure and the respective system continues to communicate, the pilot can initiate reversionary mode by pressing the EMRG/BRT button for greater than three (3) seconds. The Right button is the brightness adjustment and reversionary mode call button. AuRACLE 17 of 19
