5 INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS: Proper mounting of the DR5180 / DR5280 is critical to ensure proper operation. 1 The Ultrasonic beam pattern radiates from the sensor in a cone-shaped pattern. The charts at right show the beam radius at varying distances: The first 12 inches of beam are the "Dead Zone" in which measurement (or sensing) DOES NOT occur. BE SURE TO MOUNT THE DR5180 / DR5280 SENSOR AT LEAST 12 INCHES ABOVE THE HIGHEST LEVEL WHICH IS TO BE MEASURED. 6 INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS cont... INSTALLATION ON A "NON-LEVEL" SURFACE 4a Use a "self-aligning" type bulkhead fitting to mount the DR5180 / DR5280 on "non-level" surfaces. BULKHEAD SENSOR 4b When using a "self-aligning" bulkhead, be certain to secure the sensor in an upright position. Some bulkheads feature a locking mechanism, while others may require the insertion of screws to maintain proper sensor orientation. FOAM AND LIMITED SPACE APPLICATIONS 5a The DR5180 / DR5280 may be installed within a continuous pipe to eliminate interference created by foam or for improving reading in an application with limited space. The only liquid that enters the pipe is from the bottom, thus eliminating surface foam. The pipe is also helpful where space is limited to or the DR5180 / DR5280 must be mounted near the side of the tank. LIMITED SPACE APPLICATION Pressure release hole Liquid FOAM APPLICATION Pressure release hole Foam Liquid 5b Whenever a DR5180 / DR5280 is installed within a tube, a small hole must be placed within 2" of the sensor to allow pressure to equalize between the inside of the tube and the tank atmosphere. A 1/4" hole is sufficient for pressure equalization. If more ventilation is required, add either 1 hole at 180 degres from the original or 3 holes at 90 degrees from original. Make sure all burrs have been removed and the inside of the pipe is smooth. Drill a 1/4" hole within the top 2" inches of the pipe to equalize pressure in the pipe. Always clear all burrs created by drilling the pipe. If the liquid does not rise and fall with the tank level, increase the size of the notch or add additional holes to the top. Any interrupctions, such as two sections welded together or fastened together will create a false return signal. 5d The pipe diameter may range from 2" to 6". However, the pipe must be of uniform dimension. 2" to 6" diameter pipe DO NOT USE WELDED PIPE OR FASTEN LENGHTHS OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS 6 When installing the DR5180 outdoors, it is important to shade the unit from direct sunlight. 11 W S WIRING MODEL DR-5180, DR-5280 or Following is the wiring diagram: RED BLACK CLEAR/WHITE BARE 24 VDC POWER SUPPLY PLC, SCADA or DISPLAY +12 TO 30 VDC (24 Volts Recommended) Ground 4-20mA Signal Shield The power should be supplied by a good quality regulated power source or a battery. The wires must be isolated from sources of electrical noise such as high voltage power lines, variable frequency drives, or highly inductive or capacitive loads. Such electrical interference can cause an irregular output signal from the sensor. POWER (Red) GROUND (Black) SHIELD (Bare) 4-20mA (Clear/White) See NOTE above File: T4\O&M\ULTRASON\ECHOWIRE.tcw (U12.pdf) The DR-5180 / DR-5280 sensor is shipped from the factory with all wires stripped and tinned for easy connection. Before connection, disable power source. Connect wires following the wiring diagram. If all wires are not connected, they should be left floating by cutting off the stripped end, covering it with electrical tape, or using a small wire nut. NOTE: If the 4-20mA signal is being sent over long distance and the signal appears unsteady, a 100uF capacitor should be connected at the 4-20mA termination to filter noise. 4-20mA ANALOG OUTPUT The DR-5180 and DR-5280 have a 4-20mA output that is scaled from 1' to 10' (DR-5180) or 1'- to 20' (DR-5280). The output distances are not adjustable. The 4mA distance is 1' and the 20mA distance is 10' (DR-5180) or 20' (DR-5280). The current output is linear between the above distance.
