3 Section I Introduction axcs Chair Mounted Unit This manual contains installation, operation and care instructions and user service information for the DentalEZ axcs Chair Mounted Unit (CMU). The axcs CMU is designed to provide trouble-free service when installed, operated and maintained according to the procedures set forth in this manual. To ensure correct installation, carefully read all the procedure instructions contained in this manual paying close attention to all notes, cautions and warnings. Before proceeding, please review the illustration below to become familiar with the components of the axcs CMU. After the CMU is installed, please review the operation procedures and care guidelines with the doctor's staff. Then leave this manual in the doctor's office for the doctor's and the staff's future reference. 4 Section I Introduction The axcs CMU is available and shipped in eight different model configurations. (See chart below.) The CMU-A basic package includes one Delivery Head with Arm Assembly, one Post-Mounted Service Console and one Utility Service Center (USC). This basic package can be either Traditional (CMU-A) or Euro-Style (CMU-AE). CMU Models B, C and D incorporate the basic CMU- A package and include the extra features listed in the chart below. 6 Section I Introduction Basic CMU Components The axcs CMU components are packaged and shipped according to the carton diagrams below. NOTE: Be aware that some cartons are shipped as fillers and may be empty (even if optional components are ordered). Please verify the axcs CMU components packaging contents against the packing list. All parts supplied are necessary for proper installation, so be sure not to discard any hardware or components until installation is complete. NOTE: The USC umbilical bracket is shipped from the factory attached to the post-mounted service console umbilical assembly and is not included in the USC package. 1. Remove the full-size, scaled USC template found in the back of this manual. 2. Position the USC template according to the exact layout indicated, making certain correct distance from base to chair is maintained. 3. Using the USC template, drill four corner mounting holes for the USC base. But do not secure the base to the floor at this time. axcs Chair Mounted Unit NOTE: For wood or metal floors, drill 5/32" holes. For concrete, drill 1/4" holes and install plastic anchors. IMPORTANT NOTICE DO NOT DISCARD the USC template after use. Neatly refold it and replace it in the back of this manual WARNING Before proceeding with plumbing and electrical installation, comply with and maintain all applicable utility codes and regulations. Plumbing Contractor's Procedure NOTICE For reference, a color-coded tubing diagram is located at the end of this manual. 1. Find and open the USC bag of supplies. 2. Using the full-size, scaled USC template found in the back of this manual, orient the utilities (as shown in the picture below) and stub through the floor. 8 Section II Pre-installation NOTE: Pay close attention to the orientation of the template to the chair. 3. Sweat the valve adaptors to the air and water stubs. 4. Apply the appropriate thread sealant to the valve adaptors and install the stop valves. 5. Sweat the vacuum and gravity drain elbows to the stubs. Water Actuator Valve Assembly Air Fitting Assembly Electrical Contractor's Procedure NOTICE Electrical contractor's parts are not supplied. The electrical contractor is to provide a covered 115 VAC receptacle which meets all applicable utility codes and regulations. For the recommended location of the 115 VAC receptacle, see the full-size, scaled USC template in the back of this manual. NOTE: If the recommended location is not met, the USC base or the optional power module may interfere with the 115 VAC receptacle. 115 VAC Receptacle 6. Sweat the hose connectors to the elbows as applicable and orient as shown in the photo above. 7. Flush the air and water lines to remove trash and debris from the lines. 8. Connect the water actuator valve assembly to the water stop valve as shown in the photo above. Using a 5/8" open-end wrench, tighten the nut securely. 9. Connect the air fitting assembly to the air stop valve as shown in the photo above. Using a 5/8" open-end wrench, tighten the nut securely. axcs Chair Mounted Unit 7

Adaptor Bar Mounts A fixed or left/right adaptor bar is available for the axcs CMU. The fixed adaptor bar may be permanently positioned on the left or right side of the axcs or J -Chair. NOTE: For right-hand operation, mount the chair adaptor bar on the left side (from the perspective of sitting in the chair). NOTE: All adaptor bar installation photos depict right-hand mounts. 1. Raise the chair's base and back to its full UP position. 2. Disconnect the chair's power supply. 3. Using a 9/16" hex-head bolt and lock washer, attach the fixed adaptor bar to the underside of the axcs Chair's seat casting. Then hand tighten the bolt. b. If the seat upholstery is already installed, remove the seat in accordance with the respective chair's installation instructions. Then replace the seat when CMU installation is complete. Using two 9/16" hex-head bolts and two 3/8" lock washers, and one 3/4" hex-head bolt and lock washer, attach the chair mount plate to the underside of the J- Chair's seat casting. Using a 3/4" and 9/16" socket and ratchet, tighten all three bolts to secure the chair mount plate in place. c. Using a 9/16" hex-head bolt and 3/8" lock washer, attach the fixed adaptor bar 3/4" Hex-head Bolt & Lock Washer Chair Mount Plate 9/16" Hex-head Bolt & Lock Washer Fixed Adaptor Bar to the top side of the chair mount plate. Then hand tighten the bolt. d. Repeat this procedure for the 3/4" hexhead bolt and 1/2" lock washer. Then tighten both bolts securely. axcs Chair Left/Right Adaptor Bar Carton Contents: 3/4" Hex-head bolt 3/8" Wing-head screw 3/8" Lock washer 1/2" Lock washer 1/2" Bolts and nuts (3 each) 5/16" Lock washers (3) Thick-thrust washer and thin-thrust washer Flange bearing and grease Adaptor bar a. Apply a thin coat of grease to the flange bearing surface, the internal surface of the counter-bored hole in the adaptor bar, the circumference of the flange bearing shaft and both sides of all thrust washers. b. Orient the adaptor bar with ribs facing downward and align the holes in the chair casting with the adaptor bar holes. c. Insert the 3/8" wing-head screw up through the adaptor bar into the chair casting to temporarily hold the bar in place. axcs Chair Mounted Unit 9

Place the thick-thrust washer over the flange bearing shaft. e. Insert the bushing from the underside of the adaptor bar and slide it through the hole. f. Place the thin-thrust washer over the flange bearing. g. Rotate the adaptor bar into position noting the orientation of the pin on the flange bearing. h. Insert a 3/4" hex-head bolt with a 1/2" lock washer through the underside of the flange bearing into the seat casting and hand tighten the bolt. i. Remove the 3/8" wing-head screw. j. Using a 3/4" socket and ratchet, secure the adaptor bar to the seat casting. Make sure the hex-head bolt is tightened sufficiently but still allows rotation. k. Reinsert the 3/8" wing-head screw with lock washer through the adaptor bar and thread into the appropriate hole in the casting for left or right delivery. l. Tighten the 3/8" wing-head screw. 4. Reconnect the chair power. NOTE: Replace the seat upholstery if it was removed. NOTE: To rotate the left/right adaptor bar to the opposite side, remove the wing-head screw, rotate the bar, then reinsert and tighten the wing-head screw on the opposite side. Post-Mounted Service Console 1. Place the post-mounted service console on top of the adaptor bar. 2. Orient the console parallel to the chair with the water quick disconnect facing toward the back of the chair. 3. Align the three holes in the adaptor bar to the holes in the console base. 4. Continue with the appropriate CMU (fixed or left/right) mounting instructions. Fixed-Mount CMU a. Place a 5/16" flat washer on three 1/2" hex-head bolts then push the bolts down through the holes in the console base into the adaptor bar. NOTE: The three extra holes in the flange are for mounting the fixed adaptor bar on the opposite side. 1/2" Hex-head Bolts with Flat Washers Flange 3/4" Hex-head Bolt 3/8" Wing-head Screw Lock Washers and Nuts 10 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

12 Section III Installation b. From the underside of the adaptor bar, place a 5/16" lock washer and nut on each of the three bolts. c. Tighten the three bolts using a 1/2" socket and ratchet and 1/2" open-end wrench. d. Continue to Step 5. Left/Right-Mount CMU a. Place a 5/16" lock washer on each of the three 1/2" bolts and push the bolts up through the holes in the adaptor bar into the console base. 5/16" Wing-head Screws 1/2" Bolt 5/16" Lock Washer NOTE: When switching from right to left hand operation, remove the three 5/16" wing-head screws, rotate the console, then reinsert and tighten the wing head screws. b. Tighten the three bolts to secure. c. Continue to Step Using a torpedo level, check the perpendicular and parallel levels of the unit post. NOTE: If leveling adjustments are necessary, do the following steps: a. Loosen the three 1/2" hex-head bolts. b. Adjust the three set screws located on the underside of the adaptor bar until the unit post is plumb. c. Retighten the three 1/2" hex-head bolts. Console Covers 1. To remove the console side covers, lift up the top cover about 1/2". Then unfasten the hinges on the bottom of the unit and separate the side covers. NOTE: It is highly recommended to keep the console side covers off until all installation and testing is completed. 2. To replace the side covers, align the grooves in the right and left covers, making sure the bottom plate is in the groove on the left cover. Fasten the hinges on the bottom of the unit. Then press the top cover down flush. Water Heater (Optional) Refer to the water heater instructions provided. 13 Section III Installation axcs Chair Mounted Unit 1. From the underside of the chair arm, remove and discard the two outer hex-head bolts. 2. Line up the holes in the mounting bracket with the holes in the chair arm. 3. Attach the mounting bracket to the underside of the chair arm using the two 5/16" sockethead bolts provided. 5/16" Socket-head Bolts 4. Attach the supplied nylon clamps to the underside of the CMU adaptor bar using the two #10 screws provided. 5. Pass the tubing from the assistant's arm through the nylon clamps. 6. Use the supplied tie straps to neatly dress the tubing to the underside of the chair casting. 7. Connect the 5/8" spiral hose from the rear of the assistant's arm to the 5/8" spiral hose at the bottom opening of the CMU by simply sliding the tubing from the assistant's arm over the connector from the CMU. 8. Place the assistant's arm in its normal operating position and make sure the bottom portion of the assistants's arm is level. NOTE: If leveling is needed, tilt the arm up to expose the set screw in the leveling plate and adjust the leveling set screw as necessary. Leveling Plate Leveling Set Screw Assistant's Arm Mounting Bracket Saliva Ejector 1. Connect the saliva ejector valve to the 1/4" saliva ejector tubing. Closed 1/2" Port Instrument Holder Saliva Ejector Valve 2. Hang the saliva ejector valve in the instrument holder. 3. Connect the tubing to the open 1/4" port under the solids collector in the assistant's arm. High-Volume Evacuator (HVE) 1. Connect the HVE valve to the 1/2" tubing. HVE Valve 2. Hang the HVE valve in the instrument holder. 3. Connect the tubing to an open 1/2" port under the solids collector in the assistant's arm. 1/2" HVE Tubing 4. If an optional second high-volume evacuator valve is used, do the following: a. Insert a sharp, pointy object into the closed 1/2" port under the solids collector and create a smooth opening. b. Repeat Steps 1 through 3. Air/Water Syringe (Optional) 1. Pass the syringe tubing from the assistant's arm through the bottom opening of the console box and route the tubing up to make connection in the console box. (See the tubing diagram in the back of this manual.) 12 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

14 Section III Installation 2. Inside the service console, cut off the tubing plugs on the 1/8" red tubing marked A from poppet valve and the 1/8" green tubing marked W from the water manifold. IMPORTANT NOTE: Leave the slide clamp on the A and W tubings at this stage. 3. Connect the A and W tubings to the syringe tubings marked A and W from the assistant s arm. Secure them using the four 1/8" tubing clamps and two in-line connectors provided. 4. Connect the syringe to the valve body and install the nozzle tube assembly following the instructions in the supplied syringe manual. 5. On the underside of the assistant's arm housing, connect the male and female quick connect fittings to the syringe. Hardware: 1/8" tubing clamps (4) In-line connectors (2) 4' Length high-volume evacuator tubing 4' Length saliva ejector tubing 5/16" countersink, socket-head bolts (2) Tubing routing clamps and tie straps (2 each) 1. Remove the two screws from the underside of the lower cantilever cover and take off the cover. 2. Remove the solid-cap plug from the back side of the upper cantilever cover and replace it with the supplied bushing. 3. Remove the existing brake handle cover. 4. Using the two countersink bolts, attach the mounting bracket to the chair. Syringe Air/ Water Quick Connects Bracket Countersink Bolts 6. Hang the syringe in the instrument holder. 7. Slide the clamp off the air and water tubes in the CMU to permit flow. Unscrew the decorative socket bolt from the bracket but leave the plastic washer on the mounting bracket. 6. Install the new brake handle cover. 15 Section III Installation axcs Chair Mounted Unit 8. Put the other plastic washer on the decorative bolt and insert the bolt through the link. 9. Thread the bolt into the bracket and tighten the bolt making sure the bolt is sufficiently secure but still allows rotation. 10. From the underside of the bracket, install the nut on the decorative socket bolt. While holding the decorative socket bolt with a 3/16 Allen wrench, tighten the nut using a 9/16 wrench. 11. Attach the tubing bracket to the switch bracket on the chair using the two screws provided. 17. Connect the tubes in the USC. (Refer to the tubing schematic in the back of this manual.) 18. Check the level of the arm. (Refer to fixed assistant's arm, Page 12, Step 8.) Touch Pad Controller (Optional) If installing the optional touch pad controller on the assistant's arm (standard, fixed or the optional left/ right) for the axcs or J-Chair, refer to the installation instructions included with the controller. Cuspidor (Optional) Tubing Strain Relief Bushing 1. If the cuspidor is not installed, insert the spindle of the cuspidor through the hole in the top cover and bushing of the console. Make sure the trim ring is in place and the tubing is not pinched in the bushing. Switch Bracket Tubing Retainer Bracket #10 Screws 12. Pass the tubing and wires from the assistant's arm through the bushing in the cantilever cover. 13. Pass the tubing and wires through the tubing retainer bracket. 14. Route the tubing and wires down the inside of the chair's cantilever arm. Then secure using the tie straps as needed to prevent the tubing and wires from going beyond the tubing retainer bracket and being pinched or cut. Allow enough slack for chair movement. 15. Remove the base (pump) cover and route the tubing and wires under the chair's pump housing sheet metal. 16. Trim out the slot on the front of the base (pump) cover and route the tubing and wires through the slot. Then replace the base cover. Cup Filler Spout Vent Line Trim Ring Set Screw Tubing Connections Drain Elbow Bowl Rinse Spout 2. Take the drain tubing elbow of the umbilical and slip it onto the cuspidor drain. Connect the vent line to the exposed barb. 3. Connect the 1/4" green, 1/4" clear and 1/8" red tubes from the cuspidor to the corresponding tubes in the console. Slide the tubing clamp off the 1/8" red air line in the console. 4. Tighten the set screw in the console casting until it contacts the pivot and adjust for desired rotation tension. 14 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

16 Section III Installation 5. If reinstalling the bowl rinse spouts, lubricate the bowl rinse spout with soap and attach it to the barb closest to the bowl. 6. If reinstalling the cup filler spouts, lubricate the cup filler spout with soap and attach it to the barb on top of the cup holder. Delivery Head Arm Assembly The following arm assembly instructions pertain to both the Traditional and Euro-style head. WARNING Do not remove the shipping bracket on the delivery head unit until the following four steps have been completed. NOTE: Make sure a plastic bushing is on top of the console post. Remove tape if necessary. 1. Feed the low-voltage (black and white/blue and gray) wire leads along with the colored tubing through the console post down into the console box. CAUTION Be careful not to pinch or crimp any wires or tubing. Pivot Stop Delivery Head Arm Bushing Wires & Tubing Console Post 2. Insert the delivery head arm into the post. NOTE: There is a stop located on the end of the delivery head arm pivot. If switching from right hand to left hand operation, back out the set screw in the console post, rotate the arm and reposition the set screw. 3. On the Traditional head, use a 1/4" open-end wrench to remove the three screws and shipping bracket from the arm/delivery head assembly. Then discard the three screws and shipping bracket. 4. Connect the color-coded tubing harness of the delivery head arm to the tubing harness in the console box. (See the tubing diagram in the back of this manual.) Touch Pad Controller (Optional) If mounting the optional touch pad controller on the delivery head for the axcs or J-Chair, refer to the installation instructions provided with the controller. Light Post (Optional) NOTE: For complete light installation instructions, refer to the manual supplied with the light. 1. Remove and discard the plastic plug from the top of the CMU cover. Slide the plastic grommet down the light pole until it rests on top of the CMU cover. Power Module 1/8" Yellow Tube Basic Electrical Box (Optional) 1. Unplug all cords from the receptacle in the USC. NOTE: See the standard electrical box wiring diagram in the back of this manual for connections. Umbilical Harness Adaptor Harness Basic Electrical Box 2. Connect the supplied adaptor harness to the wiring harness of the umbilical. 3. Connect the green wire of the adaptor harness to the USC base or electrical box to ground it. NOTE: The adaptor harness has two connectors: One will connect to the fiber optic transformer (if ordered). The other will connect to the light transformer (if ordered). Both transformers plug into the basic electrical box. Power Module (Optional) 1. Unplug all cords from the receptacle in the USC. NOTE: Refer to the power module wiring diagram in the back of this manual for connections. 2. Connect the wiring harness from the umbilical to the power module. 3. Using the tube clamps supplied, connect the 1/8" yellow air line from the umbilical to the 1/8" barb on the power module. Then disengage the pinch clamps. NOTE: If the unit is equipped with a cuspidor, one 1/8" yellow line will be connected to the water stop valve. The other 1/8" yellow line at the 1/ 8" tee will connect to the power module. 4. After checking all the plug connections, reconnect the power plug into the receptacle in the USC. NOTE: Make sure the air valve in the USC is open. 5. At the delivery head, turn the master switch to ON and ensure power is available at the power module. NOTE: For fiber optics electrical connections, see the basic electrical box or power module system wiring diagrams in the back of this manual. Traditional Head Umbilical Harness Fiber Optics-Electrical (Optional) 1. Lift the delivery head lid to reach the internal components. 2. Slide the black and white electrical wire leads from the lamp controller through the hole in the underside of the delivery head. 16 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

Wire the internal electrical connections (black to black, white to white). 6. Cut off the tubing plugs from the clear 1/8" air signal tubings and connect corresponding tubings to the air switch barbs marked with numbers 1, 2 and 3 inside the delivery head. 7. In the CMU plug the black and white wire leads from the arm into the orange and yellow wires from the umbilical wiring harness. NOTE: If the optional power module was installed, installation of the fiber optics electrical system is complete. If the power module was not ordered, proceed to Step Plug the supplied adaptor wiring harness into the wiring harness from the umbilical. NOTE: If the power module was not ordered, the unit is equipped with a power pack transformer. 9. Plug the connector end into the yellow and orange wires of the adaptor wiring harness. 10. Plug the power pack transformer into the basic electrical box. Euro-Style Head 1. Raise the rear of the delivery head cover and gently lift it over the front of the unit until the cover lies flat. This will give free access to the internal components. NOTE: To eliminate the possibility of bending the hinge, use care not to force the cover down. 2. Line up the three air barbs from the fiber optic controller with the larger holes in the chassis. 3. Slip the electrical wires through the matching holes on the bottom of the delivery head chassis. 4. Attach the fiber optic unit to the chassis using the four #6 screws and lock washers provided. 5. Connect the fiber optic wires by color matching them to their mating wires in the delivery head. 6. Cut off the tubing plugs on the clear 1/8" air signal tubes coming from the valve block. 7. To continue euro-style head fiber optics electrical system installation, follow traditional head installation Steps 7 through Before closing the cover, make sure all connections are firm and none of the leads or tubings interfere with any other part of the unit or with closing the cover. Standard (Non-Fiber Optic) Traditional Head 1. Align the female tube connectors to the male tube connectors. 2. Press the tube connectors together, and ensure the alignment pin engages the hole in the chassis of the delivery head. 3. Fit the tabs of the tubing cover to engage in the chassis. 4. Press firmly to seat the connector and twist the tubing cover counterclockwise to lock it securely into the chassis. 5. Hang the handpiece tubing coupler in holder. Euro-Style Head Handpiece Tubing 1. Slip the arm tube containing the handpiece tubing over the end of the whip arm return mechanism. NOTE: The holder on the left is dedicated to the syringe, but any of the remaining three holders may be used. 2. Find the screw hole on the underside of the tube and install the #4 screw furnished. 3. Before inserting the handpiece tubing into the small rectangular opening on the underside of chassis, make sure the tubing is not twisted. 4. Route the tubing under the arm return bracket to meet the proper tubing coming from the valve block. NOTE: The numbers on the bracket should match those on the chassis next to the valve block. 5. Carefully insert the matching connectors into the proper tubings and twist tightly. NOTE: After each handpiece tubing assembly is installed, ensure nothing interferes with the closing of the cover. 6. Return the cover to its closed position. 7. Place the handpiece connector in the matching groove in the cover (near the upper end of the groove). 8. Move the whip arm to the low position (over the top of the delivery head cover). 9. Adjust the short length of tubing between the bottom of the whip arm and the delivery head chassis until the tubing lies loosely against the chassis. Fiber Optic (Optional) Traditional Head 1. Carefully insert the matching connectors into the proper tubing and twist tightly. 6. Insert the electrical bayonet connector into the matching socket. NOTE: After each handpiece tubing assembly is installed, ensure nothing interferes with the cover. 7. Return the cover to its closed position. 8. Place the handpiece connector in the matching groove in the cover (near the upper end of the groove). 9. Move the whip arm to the low position (over the top of the delivery head cover). 10. Adjust the short length of tubing between the bottom of the whip arm and the delivery head chassis until the tubing lies loosely against the chassis. Traditional Head 1. Disengage the tubing pinch clamp from the air and water lines inside the delivery head. Clamp Syringe Tubing 2. Hang the syringe valve in the holder. 3. Connect the syringe to the valve body and install the nozzle tube assembly, following the instructions in the owner s manual supplied with the syringe. Euro-Style Head 1. Slip the arm tube containing the syringe tubing over the end of the whip arm return mechanism at the far left. NOTE: The holder on the far left is reserved for the syringe assembly. 2. Find the screw hole on the underside of tube and install the #4 screw furnished. 3. Insert the end of the tubing into the rectangular hole on the underside of the chassis. 4. Route the tubing under the arm return bracket to meet the two syringe connectors. NOTE: The air and water connectors will fit in their proper mating connectors. 5. Twist the connectors tightly and make certain they are secure. NOTE: As with the handpiece tubing above, the tab attached to the bracket may be bent down to hold the syringe tubing in place. 6. Close the cover and place the syringe in the mating groove. NOTE: When placed, the syringe should extend beyond the end of the groove by the length of the syringe tube. This can be adjusted later to suit each doctor. 7. Move the whip arm to the low position (over top of delivery head cover). 8. Adjust the short length of the tubing between the bottom of the whip arm and the delivery head chassis until the tubing lies loosely against chassis. NOTICE After completing all tubing installation, make certain the tubing is properly connected and does not interfere with the closing of the delivery head cover. Field-Installed Chipblower (Optional) WARNING Before connecting the optional field installed chipblower, make sure the unit is OFF so that no air is present at the foot control. 1. Remove the seven flat-head screws from the base of the foot control and disassemble. Chipblower Flat Head Screws 2. Remove the chip air line on the foot control tubing from the tee fitting. NOTE: Secure all connections using the tubing clamps provided. 3. Connect a six-inch section of the clear 1/8" tubing included in the kit to the tee fitting and rotate it around the drive air valve. 4. Remove the hex plug from the drive air valve. 9. Place a plastic washer on the threaded end of the barb fitting. 10. Install the barb fitting into the drive air valve. 11. Route a six-inch section of tubing from the drive air valve to the remaining barb on the chip air valve assembly. 12. Reassemble the foot control and replace the seven flat-head screws Delivery Head Tray with Pad Traditional Head 1. Place the pad on top of the delivery head and position until the tray centers properly. 2. Place the tray on the pad. Euro-Style Head 1. Place the pad on the tray holder. 2. Place the tray on the pad. USC Base 1. Position the USC base over the four corner holes that were drilled during pre-installation. 2. Secure the base using four #10 screws. NOTICE If previous utilities interfere with the USC base internal bracing, modification may be necessary. Umbilical Connection 1. Using two #10 screws, attach the umbilical bracket to the USC base. 2. Attach the red incoming air pressure line to the air fitting assembly using the compression fitting supplied. IMPORTANT NOTES Before making tubing connections, use soap to lubricate all in-line barbs and lines. After making each connection, secure by sliding an appropriate size tubing clamp over the barb/tube connection. Connect this line to the valve/actuator assembly. (Secure.) Water Valve/Actuator Assembly e. Slide a 1/4" tubing clamp on green water line from the umbilical. (Lubricate.) Connect this line to the remaining 1/4" barb on the water valve/ actuator assembly. (Secure.) 10. Open the water stop valve and check for leaks. 24 Section IV Testing NOTE: Before testing the delivery system, make sure the shipping tie wrap is removed from the adjustable arm pivot area at the delivery head. Adjustable Arm Delivery System To check the maneuverability of the adjustable arm, do the following: 1. Depress and hold the air brake button. 2. Slightly lift the adjustable arm, then lower it into the desired position. 3. Release the air brake button. 4. To raise the unit, lift up to the desired position. Utility Service Center 1. Turn on all services supplying the USC. 2. Open the air and water manual stop valves by turning the knobs counterclockwise. 3. Inspect all joints and connections for leaks. 4. Plug the power cord from the USC into an electrical outlet. 5. Turn the master switch ON. Master ON/OFF Switch 6. Inspect for leaks in the service console, cuspidor and delivery head. Air and Water Filter/Regulators NOTICE The air regulator is factory preset to deliver 80 PSI. The water regulator is preset to deliver 40 PSI. If the regulators are not set at 80 PSI for air and 40 PSI for water, do the following adjustment process: 1. Pull the locking knob. 2. Turn the adjustment knob on each regulator until the correct pressure reading is reached. 3. When finished, push the locking knob down. Syringe If the unit is equipped with a syringe, first depress the air button and then the water button to test the flow. Foot Control and Handpieces Coolant Water Lines WET/DRY Toggle Valve Wet 1. At the foot control, flip the toggle valve to WET. CAUTION Before connecting handpieces, all air must be purged from the coolant water lines to allow the system to function properly. 2. Purge air from the coolant water lines on each handpiece as follows: a. Turn the coolant valves, located underneath the delivery head, to their full, open position. While facing the deliver head, start with the handpiece tubing on the far left; then fully depress the foot control to allow water to flow into a sink or other container. d. As the water is flowing, continue the purging operation of the remaining tubings (moving from the left tubing to the right tubing). e. Allow water to flow freely from all tubings for approximately two minutes to ensure all air has escaped. 3. Attach the handpieces to the tubing as follows: a. Slide the connector nut down along the tubing to expose the handpiece adaptor. b. Carefully align and insert the handpiece base into the adaptor. c. Replace and tighten the connector nut to complete installation. Tubing Air Pressure Adaptor Handpiece Nut (Insert Air Pressure Gauge Here) 1. Flip the toggle valve from WET to DRY at the foot control. 2. To adjust the individual handpiece drive air pressure to the manufacturer's specifications do the following procedure: a. Remove the handpiece from its holder. b. Insert an air pressure gauge as indicated in the illustration above. (Traditional Delivery Head Shown) c. Hold the handpiece, fully depress the foot control and observe the amount of air pressure delivered to the handpiece. d. Locate the air pressure adjustment screws on the bottom of the delivery head chassis. e. Using a slotted screwdriver, turn the air pressure adjustment screw on the control valve of the appropriate handpiece (counterclockwise to increase pressure, clockwise to decrease pressure) until the hand-piece manufacturer's correct specification registers on the pressure gauge. 3. Repeat a. through e. in Step 2 to set the pressure for each handpiece. NOTE: If a low-speed handpiece is required, slide the coolant air and water restrictor over the lines on the appropriate control valve. Chip Air Foot Control If the CMU is equipped with a chip air foot control, a burst of air should be delivered to the handpiece when the chip air valve is depressed. Flush Valve 1. Remove the handpiece from its holder. 2. Activate the flush toggle valve. Air Pressure Adjustment Screws 3. Operate each handpiece for 30 seconds into a cuspidor, sink or open vacuum line. 24 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

26 Section IV Testing Check the cup filler and bowl rinse flow control valves for proper operation. Cup Fill Cuspidor 1. With the cup in place, depress and release the button on the top of the cuspidor housing that is closest to the cup filler. 2. Insert the adjustment tool in the valve stem marked CUP FLOW on the bottom cover of the cuspidor to engage the valve. 3. Turn the valve counterclockwise to increase the cup flow rate. To decrease the cup flow rate, turn the valve clockwise. 4. Insert a small-slotted screw driver in the valve stem marked CUP TIME on the bottom cover of cuspidor to set the timed cup fill. 5. To increase the cup fill length of time, turn the valve clockwise. To decrease the cup fill length of time, turn the valve counterclockwise. Bowl Rinse 1. Depress and release the button on top of the cuspidor housing that is closest to the rinse bowl. 2. Insert the adjustment tool in the valve stem marked BOWL FLOW on the bottom cover of cuspidor to engage the valve. 3. Turn the valve counterclockwise to increase the bowl rinse flow rate. To decrease flow rate, turn clockwise. 4. Insert a small-slotted screw driver in the valve stem marked BOWL TIME on the bottom cover of cuspidor to set the timed bowl rinse. 5. Turn the valve clockwise to increase the bowl rinse length of time. To decrease the time, turn counterclockwise. Fiber Optics Optional Features Follow the test procedures outlined in the instructions included in each fiber optic handpiece package. Bowl Time Cup Time Bowl Flow Cup Flow Assistant s Vacuum Accessories 1. Make sure the shut off valve located on the underside of the rear assistant's head is in the OPEN position. 2. Evacuate one cup of water (8 oz. each) through the saliva ejector and the highvolume evacuator. NOTICE After all final testing is complete, install the USC cover using four #10 screws. 27 Section V Operation axcs Chair Mounted Unit Delivery System The axcs CMU offers the following design features: Operation of three handpieces and a syringe. Drive air and coolant water may be adjusted individually for each handpiece. Foot control toggle valve allows wet or dry cutting. Master switch turns entire unit ON and OFF. Easy cleaning and disinfecting. Master Switch Controls Traditional & Euro-Style Head The master toggle switch located in the rear of the delivery unit controls the ON/OFF function of air, water and electricity to the entire unit. Flip the toggle switch to the right to turn ON the unit. IMPORTANT: At the end of each work day, and anytime the unit is unattended, make sure the master control switch is in the OFF position. An automatic CUT OFF, can be demonstrated by placing tubing in the hanger and disabling operation for that position. Rotate Handpiece Holder Set Screw Instrument Hanger The handpiece holder angle can be adjusted by using an Allen wrench to loosen two set screws and rotating the holder to the desired angle; then retightening the screws. An oil collector/filter is designed to collect oil from the handpiece exhaust air. Periodically check the filter for cleaning or replacement by lifting the delivery head cover and removing the screws that secure the filter cover. Master ON/OFF Switch Swing-Away Instrument Hanger Traditional Head This feature s design allows the following functions: The entire instrument hanger bar can be moved to the left or right to provide easy access to the optional tray on top of the delivery head. Grasp the delivery head with one hand; with the other hand, grasp the instrument hanger bar handle and move it to the left or right. Euro-Style Head Oil Collector/ Filter This feature s design allows the following functions: The multi-positional tray pivots around from left to right. The multi-positional tray can also move back and forth for easy tubing access. 26 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

28 Section V Operation Handpiece Coolant Water Spray Coolant water spray to all the handpieces can be turned ON or OFF using the toggle switch located on the foot control. The coolant spray volume is individually regulated for each handpiece as follows: 1. Locate the water coolant valves found underneath the delivery head. Water Coolant Valves Handpieces and syringe instruments conveniently lay in four recessed areas on top of the delivery head cover. Delivery Head Positioning The horizontal and vertical location of delivery head can be varied by doing the following: To vary the horizontal location, push or pull the instrument hanger bar handle. To raise the delivery head, lift up the instrument hangar bar handle. Brake Release Button (Traditional Delivery Head Shown) Air Pressure Adjustment Screws 2. While operating the handpiece, turn the valve counterclockwise to increase the volume of coolant water spray. To decrease the volume, turn the valve clockwise. Air Pressure Air pressure to each handpiece can be adjusted to the manufacturer's specifications by following the air pressure instructions in Section IV Testing under the heading Handpiece on Page 24. NOTE: These procedures must be done while: The master switch is in the ON position, The handpiece is out of its holder and The foot control is fully depressed. To lower the delivery head, depress the brake release button, lift slightly on the handle and push the head down using the handle. Release the button when the delivery head is in the desired position. NOTE: When making necessary air pressure adjustments, refer to the air pressure gauge located at the front of the delivery head to check the approximate amount of air pressure delivered to the handpiece. axcs Chair Mounted Unit 27

29 Section V Operation Flush System It is recommended that the tubing of each handpiece used be flushed after each patient. 1. Hold the handpiece tubing over a sink, cuspidor or open vacuum line. Flush Toggle 2. While facing the front of unit, move the FLUSH toggle located at the rear of the delivery head to the left, and hold it there for 20 seconds. NOTE: Flushing the water line in the handpiece can be done by operating the FLUSH valve while either fully depressing or not depressing the foot control. Foot Control The speed of the handpiece is controlled by depressing the disc located on the foot control. A light pressure on the foot control disc causes a slow speed. Full pressure on the disc causes the handpiece to operate at full speed. NOTE: The coolant water spray ON/OFF function is also controlled by using the toggle valve located on the foot control as described above. WET/DRY Toggle Valve Disc Optional Chipblower axcs Chair Mounted Unit Clean Water System NOTE: Refer to the operating instructions provided with the clean water system. Optional Chipblower This feature is used to blow debris away from the cutting site by creating an air blast through the handpiece without causing the bur to rotate. To operate the chip blower, depress and hold down the valve on the upper right of the foot control. Syringe The syringe is designed to deliver air or water, or a mixture of air and water, as required. To deliver water only, press the button on the syringe marked with a water drop symbol. For air only, press the button on the syringe with no marking. To get a spray mixture of air and water, press both buttons simultaneously. NOTE: Air and water flows are factory preset. For Euro-Style Only If an air or water flow adjustment is wanted, use the following procedure: 1. Grasp the syringe valve body assembly and unscrew the ferrule by turning counterclockwise. 2. Slide the ferrule down the tubing to expose the metering block. 3. Using the screw adjustment tool (provided in the accessories package), adjust air, water and spray by turning the appropriate screw counterclockwise to increase volume, or clockwise to decrease volume. 28 Installation, Operation and Care Manual

30 Section V Operation Euro-Style High Volume Evacuator The flow of vacuum through the high-volume evacuator is controlled by the lever valve. Ferrule Adjustment Screws Valve Body Pushing the lever forward, toward the tip, closes the vacuum. 4. Grasp the syringe valve body assembly and slide the ferrule over the metering block. 5. Hand tighten to the valve body. Optional Fiber Optics The fiber optics control is automatically activated by operating the handpiece using the foot control. NOTE: When the foot control is released, the fiber optics light will stay on for approximately ten seconds to allow inspection of the cutting site. Assistant's Vacuum Accessories The standard instrumentation for a post-mounted CMU is one high-volume evacuator and one saliva ejector. Optional features include an additional highvolume evacuator and/or a three-way syringe. NOTE: The assistant s arm pivots to allow positioning of the instruments for easy access. Lever Valve Open Closed As the lever is moved toward the hose end of the valve, the vacuum flow increases. To close the valve, move the lever all the way toward the tip of the valve. Saliva Ejector The flow of vacuum through the saliva ejector is controlled by the lever valve. 31 Section V Operation Cuspidor design features: Cuspidor Cuspidor pivots allowing easier patient access. The bowl rinse and cup fill operate automatically using the adjustable timing feature. Both the cup fill and bowl rinse spouts are removable for sterilization. Cup Fill With a cup in place, depress and release the button (closest to the cup filler spout) on the top of the cuspidor housing. axcs Chair Mounted Unit 1. Plug in a male quick-connect (not provided) to start water flow. 2. Adjust the water flow rate by turning the knob counterclockwise to increase flow. To decrease the water flow rate, turn the knob clockwise. Standard City Water Optional Clean Water City Water Water/ Water Outlet Clean Bottle Jack Water On/Off Toggle Bowl Rinse Depress and release the button (closest to the rinse bowl) on top of the cuspidor housing to rinse bowl. NOTE: The bowl rinse spout rotates to different angles to change swirl pattern of flow in the bowl. Cup Fill Spout Cup Fill Button Bowl Rinse Button Bowl Rinse Spout Air Outlet Jack Water Outlet Adjustment Water Bottle Clean Water System (Optional) Post-Mounted Service Console The post-mounted service console houses most of the tubing connections, the AC wiring harness and some options if ordered. Features used regularly by the operator are the water flow control valve, the water quick-connect and air quick-connect which are located on the head end of the post-mounted service console. For water flow operation: 1. Flip the city water/clean water toggle to determine water source. 2. If using clean water option make sure the air pressure is set to psi. If adjustment is necessary, use the pressure regulator valve. (See Page 38 of this manual, Options w/ Clean Water System.) 3. If using bottle water, fill with fresh water daily. Set the water bottle ON/OFF toggle to OFF when refilling bottle. NOTE: To add the optional clean water system to a city water only system, order Kit # Installation, Operation and Care Manual

32 Section VI Care Cleaning The axcs CMU should be cleaned as follows: Wipe frequently with a damp, lint-free cloth. Use a mild detergent to clean stains. CAUTION Do not use abrasive cleaning agents. At the end of the day, turn the master ON/ OFF valve to the OFF position and clean the instrumentation. Each morning, turn the master valve ON and check the air and water system for proper operation using the three-way syringe. High-Volume Evacuator With the high-volume evacuator vacuum valve in the OFF position, disconnect the valve. Using a brush, clean the interior of the valve under a faucet, and rinse thoroughly. Saliva Ejector Disconnect the saliva ejector valve from the tubing and repeat the procedure described for the highvolume evacuator. Solids Collector To clean the solids collector, located at the instrument end of the assistant's arm, do the following: NOTE: It is recommended that puncture-resistant nitrile gloves be worn for this procedure. 1. Close the vacuum ON/OFF valve. 2. Push the lever on the saliva ejector downward to equalize pressure. 3. Remove the lid by lifting it straight up. 4. Grasp the stem on the basket and lift the basket straight up. 5. Empty debris and wash out the basket with warm water, then replace the basket and lid. 6. Open the vacuum ON/OFF valve. NOTE: After cleaning the saliva ejector, high-volume evacuator and solids collector, evacuate two cups of Vac-U-Ez cleaning solution (one cup each) through the highvolume evacuator and saliva ejector to sanitize the system. NOTICE Cleaning brushes and Vac-U-Ez solution can be ordered through DentalEZ dealers. Disinfecting Liquid disinfectants are recommended for use on all axcs CMU external surfaces and should be applied using a soft, clean cloth. CAUTION Avoid using disinfectants in spray containers because they may cause premature staining, discoloration and/or damage to the axcs CMU. Use extreme caution when selecting the proper chemical disinfectant for the axcs CMU. CAUTION Do not use disinfectants that contain any of the following: Iodophors Glutaraldehydes Phenols Sodium Hypochlorites NOTE: *Cavicide is the recommended disinfectant for use on all external surfaces. *Cavicide is a trademark of Micro Aseptic Products, Inc. Cup Fill/Bowl Rinse Both the cup fill and bowl rinse spouts can be removed for cleaning and sterilization by steam (autoclave) or chemical vapor (chemiclave). The following charts should be used when troubleshooting operational problems. If these suggested troubleshooting procedures do not resolve the problem, see the service instruction on Page 36. WARNING Exercise extreme caution when troubleshooting the electrical components of the axcs CMU. When testing, always disconnect the external power. When electrical power is required, safety precautions must be followed. Delivery Head S ymptom Possible Cause(s) Solution Unit will not turn on. No air to master switch. Open stop valve in floor utility box. Open and adjust air regulator to 80 PSI. Unit has no electric power. Unit air. has no No water (hand-piece & syringe) Faulty master switch. Slide clamp is clamping line. Check for pinched red 1/8" tubing in arms. Turn switch on and verify air flow. Verify an air supply to top fitting of valve. If air is present at top fitting of valve, verify air to foot control tubing. If no air at tubing, valve is defective. Reset circuit breaker on power module in USC. Check main circuit supply. Contact electrician. Verify air signal at air/electric switch of power module. Plug in power moduleor power box Verify proper outlet voltage in USC. Ensure master toggle valve is in inside USC. O N position. Turn stop valve on and verify 80 PSI on air gauge. Check for pinched or restricted 1/4" red tubing from floor utility box to post-mounted console. Check barbs for blockage. If none, replace valve. Place Fill bottle. the CMU switch plate toggle in O N position. Ensure clean water system gauge reads 40 PSI. Check for pinched or restricted airline. Bowl rinse button not working. Bowl rinse actuator valve in cuspidor is not opening. Verify regulator is open and pressure is at 40 PSI. Verify air signal is present at the bowl rinse poppet valve on the cuspidor when the bowl rinse button is depressed. Verify air signal is present at actuator valve when button is depressed. Bowl rinse runs continuously. Bowl does not drain or drains slowly. No water flows from cup fill. Water pressure is too high. Bowl rinse actuator valve is stuck open. Restricted or pinched drain line. Restricted or pinched vent line. Cup fill button not working. Cup fill actuator valve in cuspidor is not open. At actuator valve in cuspidor, check for water supply from floor utility box. Also, ensure water passes through the valve when the rinse button is depressed. Set water pressure gauge at 40 PSI. Check the valve in the cuspidor for air signal. If air is present, check bowl rinse poppet valve. If air is not present, replace actuator valve. Examine drain line and free any obstructions. Examine vent line and free any obstructions. Check actuator valve in cuspidor for air signal at cup fill actuator valve in post-mounted console when button is depressed Check for pinched airlines. Verify air signal is present at actuator when cup fill button is depressed. If air and water are present, replace valve. axcs Chair Mounted Unit 33

If they are stuck in the up position, check brake switch. When brake switch is activated, ensure lock arm actuator strikes lock arms. Also, ensure lock arm actuator is not stuck in actuate position. When brake switch is depressed, ensure air is reaching lock arm actuator. Ensure unit master toggle is in O N postion. If air is reaching actuator, but not extending, replace lock arm actuator. Water Heater S ymptom Possible Cause(s) Solution No warm water, cold water only. Extension cord heater. disconnected from water Water temperature is set too low. Pinched or restricted signal air tubing (1/8" yellow) to electrical receptacle in post-mounted console. Unit's extension cord is not connected to power supply. Faulty water heater. Ensure extension cord in post-mounted console is plugged into water heater. Turn adjustment screw on water heater clockwise to increase temperature. Straighten or replace tubing. Straighten or replace tubing. P lug transformer into designated receptacle in USC. Check connections in control head and post-mounted console. Check for pinched or restricted tubing. Check output for VAC. Fiber optic controls have a calibration range of 2.5 to 6.0 VDC. Check for proper voltage according to the handpiece manufacturer's recommendations. Replace bulb. Check for pinched or restricted tubing.
