2 2 Introduction ti Conducted in Spring 2008 throughout Metro Vancouver Two objectives to better understand: d 1) Dangerous goods movements 2) Heavy truck movements Supports the following initiatives: Security planning for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Asia-Pacific Gateway and Trade Corridors Truck and dangerous goods route designations 2

20 DANGEROUS GOODS 20 Conclusions Dangerous Goods 1.9% of trucks observed displayed dangerous goods placards The majority of dangerous goods carried are fuels and petroleum products, for both light and heavy trucks Diesel fuel and gasoline comprised 56% of all dangerous goods placards observed Highway 1 is a key dangerous goods route 20

21 TRUCK CLASSIFICATION 21 Conclusions Truck Classification Freeways and bridges have the greatest volumes of both light and heavy trucks Flatbeds and tractor-trailers trailers tend to move goods to and from outside of the region Highway 1 is the key route for these types of trucks Marine containers and chassis tend to stay within the region Knight Street, NFPR and SFPR are the key routes for these types of trucks 21

22 22 Next Steps Further analysis into Gateway-related truck movements Correlation between truck type observations and truck origins/destinations (eg. Warehouses) Decipher the parties involved in generating/requesting truck movements Develop a strong understanding of the whole goods movement system so that effective policies implemented 22
