4 ALABAMA AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS PREFACE In accordance with State law, it is a pleasure to present this issue of Alabama Agricultural Statistics which is the twelfth of a series that began in Bulletins in this series present information necessary to keep farmers, agricultural leaders and related interests fully informed for making plans and decisions to meet changes in the State's dynamic agriculture. Agriculture is undergoing many technological changes, changes which affect the production and processing of food, changes that can and will affect the demand and supply of many farm products. This trend, so evident at the present time, makes the compilation of statistics dealing with agriculture of far more importance to the farmer and businessman than ever before. Most of the tables in earlier bulletins of the series Alabama Agricultural Statistics contain data for a 10-year period. Data now presented update the more important series in bulletin 11 published in July All data carried in this bulletin have been revised to the level indicated by the 1964 Census of Agriculture. The material presented herein has been prepared for publicationby the Alabama Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, which reflects the cooperative efforts of the Alabama and United States Departments of Agriculture. Federal funds provide facilities for a basic program of crop, livestock and price estimates for the State as a part of the National program. State funds make it possible to prepare and publish more detailed data, such as county estimates, and special reports on commodities of local importance. The county tonnage report issued for the fertilizer industry is an example. Most of the statistics in this bulletin are estimates based on sample data and are not enumerations. It is important to acknowledge that these estimates are based largely on replies to various mail inquiries from many Alabama farmers and businessmen who buy, sell and process farm commodities. We want to acknowledge and offer our sincere thanks for the public service rendered by all reporters and cooperating agencies. Richard "Dick" Beard Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Geoge B. Strong Agricultural Statistician In Charge

5 ALABAMA AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS Reports from farmers are tabulated by counties and districts. This aids in interpreting the averages and in making calculations of the State estimates.
