3 COTTON AND COTTONSEED Planted and Harvested Acres, Yield Per Acre, Production, Disposition, Price and Value, by States, This publication presents estimates of all cotton acreage planted and harvested, yield per acre planted and harvested, production, price and value of lint and cottonseed, and farm disposition of cottonseed, by States and for the United States. American-Egyptian cotton is included in the estimates of all cotton but is also shown separately. Before 1958, laws governing cotton acreage reports specified that the initial report on acreage should relate to the acreage in cultivation on July I. In May 1958, the law was amended so that the initial report would be on acreage actually planted. In the Cotton Report as of July 1, 1958, estimates of both planted acreage and acreage in cultivation on July 1 for 1957 and 1958 were issued. Historical estimates of planted acreage for the period were attached. Since July 1958 only estimates of planted and harvested acreage have been prepared and published. Available statistics on planted acreage and yield per planted acre are brought together in this publication. Yield per planted acre is based on the total acres planted, including acres removed for compliance. The discontinued series on yield per acre in cultivation on July 1 was based on the acreage in cultivation on July 1 less the acreage removed for compliance purposes after that date. The cotton and cottonseed values shown are for the marketing season, or crop year, and should not be confused with the calendar year income. The crop marketing season is from August 1 to July 31 for all States except Texas where the crop year begins July 1. In determining the average price and value of production, an allowance has been made for redeemed and unredeemed Government loan cotton. Cotton acreage, yield, production, disposition, price and value, by States, for the years 1866 through 1943 will be found in Statistical Bulletin No Pr epared by Char'tes E. Burkhead, John J. Morgan, and Ella Sue Minor, Field Crop Statistics Branch, Agricultural Estimates Division. Primary data were provided by State Statisticians
