3 LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY INVENTORY, JANUARY, Number, Value, Classes, by States This publication presents a record of the revised estimates of the Crop Reporting Board of the Agricultural Marketing Service relating to livestock poultry inventories on farms ranches as of January I for I955-60, It continues the official series on numbers, value per head, total value of livestock as shown in "Livestock on Farms, January I, I867- I935" /, "Livestock on Farms Ranches on January, Numrer, Value, Classes, ," 2/,;Livestock Poultry Inventory, January I, Number, Value, Classes, I940~S4.2/ It also continues the official series on numbers, value per head, total value of chickens as shown in "Farm Production, Disposition Income from Chickens Eggs, ," 4/ Statistical Bulletin No, I33, for turkeys in "Farm Production, Disposition Income-from Turkeys, ," 5/ Estimates of chickens turkeys for are shown in Statistical Bulletin No, 77, -Estimates of livestock poultry inventories for the period have been released currently in annual reports other publications, The annual estimates of numbers on farms are based primarily on survey returns from livestock poultry producers, obtained mostly in cooperation with the Post Office Department through rural mail carriers, These revised State United States series are based on a thorough review of the original estimates taking into consideration the 959 Census of Agriculture other information such as year to year changes in numbers assessed for taxation, For livestock, consideration was also given to records relating to market receipts of livestock livestock products, estimates of commercial farm slaughter, For poultry, consideration was given to chick poult hatchery production, chickens turkeys tested for pullorum disease, records relating to processing inspection of poultry. These inventory estimates relate to January I of each year, In the Census of Agriculture was enumerated during October, November, December, farmers were asked to report inventories on the date of enumeration, In using Census data to review revise the inventory estimates, it was necessary to adjust from the average date of enumeration to January I, The estimates of average value per head are based on crop livestock reporters' estimates of average price per head in their localities, about January I, each year. These farm ranch operators report the value per head by age, sex, use classes of livestock poultry. Values per head, by classes for each State, for a given species are weighted together by the estimated number in each class, The weighted average so computed is the basis for the estimated value per head for the species, In the case of estimates for regions the United States, the total value is the sum of the State estimates; value per head is derived by dividing the total value by the number of head for the respective region for the United States, I/ United States Bureau of Agricultural Economics, LIVESTOCK ON FARMS, JANUARY, I867-l935, REVISED ESTIMATES, NUMBER, VALUE PER HEAD, TOTAL VALUE BY STATES AND DIVISIONS, 37 pp., illus.
