6 Quick trip to the past As early as in the 19th century, the fi rst touring cars appeared. The sometimes quite luxuriously equipped predecessors of the modern caravan were invented in Britain. Initially they were horse-drawn, but shortly after the invention of the motor vehicle the fi rst petrol-driven coaches were hitched to the travel cars. For more than one hundred years now, there has been a close relationship between Hella and motor vehicles, including caravans and motor homes. Here is a quick look at our most recent past Hella universal 2-chamber combination rearlight series 1305 with lens reflectors using bulb technology in the smallest conceivable design. Further development of the 3-chamber combination rearlight series. The 1131 series is launched, in a very progressive design for the time. The Hella universal 3-chamber combination rearlight series 1140 designed as a surface-mounted solution for towed vehicles such as trailers becomes the lighting standard for caravans. The Hella universal 4-chamber combination rearlight series 4460 as surface-mounted solution with lens pattern becomes established. The design size increases in line with the more stringent safety requirements for more light output The Caraluna success story continues. The first Hella-specific light with patternfree lens for caravans and motor homes is launched - Caraluna II for horizontal surface-mounting. Customer-specific multi-function light Fendt Caravan with chrome effect thanks to the use of a transparent lens with high-sheen vapour-plated reflectors. The Caraluna II success story unfolds further: The Caraluna II with chrome effect, with transparent lens and highsheen vapour-plated reflectors is launched on the market. Modular light series Agroluna for individual and combined lights with pattern-free lenses and bulb-based technology is launched. Customerspecific multi-function light Bürstner and Chateau. 6

7 The Hella universal 3-chamber combination rearlight series 6459 with lens pattern finds its way into the caravan industry. The light sweep allows it to be flush-mounted near the outer edges. This design effect gives a whole new dimension to motor home and caravan contours. Birth of the first multi-function light for the motor home and caravan branch. As well as integrating all the light functions, the triangular reflector required is also integrated in horizontal installation position. The Hella Caraluna I becomes a sign of quality and brand recognition for a whole branch. The modular light series 122 mm for individual and combined lights is launched. The series undergoes permanent further development in the next few years through pattern-free lights and LED lights. The customer-specific multi-function light with pattern-free lens adorns hobby caravans Customer-specific developments for hobby caravans and motor homes, Hymer motor homes and Fendt caravans and motor homes. Upgrade Caraluna multi-function light series: Caraluna II Plus with combined indicator/reverse light. Ongoing development of a success story: The Caraluna family is extended by the Caraluna Modular for vertical flushmounting. Pattern-free and coloured lens with modular reflector inserts, which allow a customised appearance, realisation with bulb-based or LED technology and horizontal flushmounting. Upgrade round light 122 mm in LED and extension of the Caraluna family: Caraluna Vertical with chrome effect. Hella matches the lighting technology inside the light to the flowing body design. A ring-shaped 3D body around the edge which generates a glowing look thanks to the use of forwardlooking LED technology takes over the taillight function and gives the rear end of the new Fendt Brilliant a unique and unmistakable appearance. 7

8 More design freedom through LEDs The use of LEDs gives design engineers much greater freedom in design. Ergonomic aspects can be implemented more easily. Versatile technical possibilities through LEDs Depending on product requirements or customer wishes, Hella uses LEDs in different optical lighting systems. 9 LED indicators and the patented failure check Legal requirement in all ECE states In the case of vehicles approved for use on public roads, the indicators must be monitored: the failure of an indicator must be shown optically or acoustically in the vehicle. This applies in all ECE states. This means possible indicator failure must be monitored by the vehicle. Manufacturers use different control systems for this. The failure checks currently in use cannot detect simple LED lights and indicate a fault. All Hella LED indicators have integrated electronics for the failure check. The indicators are self-monitoring. They generate an impulse that is evaluated by the electronic ballast. This ballast simulates a 21 W bulb, which makes operation with conventional fl asher units possible. As soon as one single LED fails, the light can be considered faulty, the impulse is not generated. The ballast then switches the bulb simulation off and the fl asher unit indicates a fault to the vehicle driver. Safe conversion to LED indicators is now possible using patented Hella electronics. Hella supplies electronic ballasts for all Hella LED indicators which makes it possible to convert the indicator failure display for various vehicles. This is necessary if the vehicle manufacturer does not guarantee indicator bulb failure checking via the vehicle electric system. The method is patented by Hella. At the moment there are three different ballasts and several different LED indicator types available. LED-light failure check and correct electrical connection Operation of the LED light with AC voltage or synchronised DC voltage is not permitted. The individual light functions may only be operated with a vehicle fuse of max. 3 A. On account of the low Watt power of LED lights, which distinguishes them signifi cantly from fi lament bulb versions, there can be problems with the bulb failure check during operation on different traction vehicles. As checking of the indicators is required by law, we recommend operating the light only in conjunction with the indicator control unit, Hella part no. 5DS In addition, further lighting functions are detected by some traction vehicles. This is a vehicle comfort function which is not required by legislation and does not release drivers from their obligation to see for themselves that the lighting equipment is working. Here, too, faulty diagnosis can occur on account of the low power levels involved (instrument panel in the driver cab indicates light failure although the function is working). If faulty diagnoses such as the ones described above occur during operation of your traction vehicle type, please contact the vehicle manufacturer. 9

11 DynaView Evo2 A new lighting era DynaView Evo2 combines the safety functions cornering light and fog light in compact round auxiliary lights which can be installed on a large number of vehicles. Front lighting When the low beam is switched on, the right or left cornering light is activated automatically and immediately when the indicator is actuated or when the vehicle drives round a bend at a speed of less than 40 km/h. A yaw rate sensor measures the vehicle's angular acceleration and triggers the turn-on signal when the car drives through a curve. At the end of the curve, a dimmer softly fades the extra light. If the reverse gear is engaged, both cornering lights are switched on and ensure broad and bright illumination of the areas along the left and right of the vehicle. The cornering light is switched off during normal driving situations on a straight stretch of road When turning a corner or driving slowly through a curve (at a speed less than 40 km/h), the cornering light is turned on automatically. When driving round a bend at a speed of up to 40 km/h, the respective headlight is switched on automatically. In foggy conditions, the cornering light can be switched on manually (both sides) as a fog light. DynaView Evo 2 inc. 12 Daytime running light Advantages of daytime running light Daytime running light provides a decisive safety advantage in road traffi c and reduces the number of accidents which result in serious injuries by 58%*. For this reason, and long before the introduction of any legal requirement, Hella has developed daytime running lights to increase driving safety. Daytime running lights provide more safety than low beam. The Hella daytime running lights generate a passively radiating white signal light. Vehicles are seen more quickly and better by other road users.
