Gary & Susan Premech, Chapter AB-A Directors Hello everyone, W e hope everyone has been enjoying the beautiful weather we ve had the last while. For all of you that are taking advantage of the early spring and out riding please be very careful as there is still a lot of gravel on the roads and the winter drivers aren t watching for our bikes. We would like to welcome back our Snowbird members as they migrate back to their summer homes. We are hoping they all had as enjoyable a winter as we that stayed here did. With this global warming as they call it, soon this may be the hot spot. It won t be long before we start taking advantage of our Sunday rides. We would encourage as many members as possible to participate in this weekly event, as it is a great way to get to know many of the new and older members. Along with the regular Sunday rides, we have a number of members that plan weekend rides and hopefully get some camping rides in as well. Please check out our ride schedule regularly as Harvey Matthews, our Ride Coordinator, will update the schedule. Our yearly courses will be advertised in the next while and our Rider Education Coordinator, Kim Coubrough, will have information out for these soon. Our Social Coordinator, Ron Syroishka, has already organized the Bunko night which has been enjoyed by all that have participated in the past. For all the new members, besides our monthly general meeting, we meet every Sunday morning year round at Fox hollow for breakfast so please join us as you are part of our GWRRA family. Remember our motto, Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. This course is recommended for anyone wanting to participate in group rides as it will give you a better understanding of the procedures GWRRA use in group riding in all chapters. Details are under News & Notices of this newsletter. Medic First Aid coming in April/May. We are planning one or two courses as needed. This course is required for everyone participating in the GWRRA Levels Program. If you are interested in attending one of these classes details are under News & Notices of this newsletter Motorist Awareness course is being planned. This course is required for everyone participating in the GWRRA Levels Program. Watch your for information. Advance Rider courses are also being planned but we need to locate a paved lot that we can use. Locations used in the past are not available to us this year. If anyone has an idea of lot that might be suitable please advise Kim at or rider goldwing calgary.com so he can contact the owners about permission. Other information There were 45 members present at the March meeting, and a special guest Michael Werner, from Region F Chapter A in Littleton, Colorado. Michael drives a semi and is in the area often. This time he was able to stop in to visit with his extended GWRRA family, and we were very pleased to welcome him. Stay safe on the road Michael, however many wheels you have under you. Dale and Diane Gillespie have decided to retire from riding their Gold Wing but have opted to donate the equivalent membership dues to our Chapter. We wish to extend our many thanks for their generosity. Dale and Diane will of course always be welcome at Chapter meetings, Sunday breakfasts, breakfast club, and other social activities. It was suggested again that our chapter adopt an bright and vivid away t-shirt for use at rallies to allow our members to find each other more easily at such events. Ken Braun and Barry Lammle will investigate options.

Wing Wag April 2016 Page 3 Pat Williams, Region J Director I t s the middle of March now and it s time for me to return home and get back to business. I ve enjoyed my time away to the utmost. But, there is a bike at home just waiting for me to come and go for a nice ride. The open road awaits! While the rest of the country has been having the normal winter wind, rain or snow, we have been having temperatures in the 80 s and 90 s, Fahrenheit of course. I have been fortunate to go along on several rides with AZ-D on 4 wheels. Fun times. Region J has been given our assignments for volunteering at Wing Ding. We haven t been asked to volunteer in the past due to our low numbers who attend, especially if Wing Ding happens in the East and South East USA. This year Region J has been assigned to work security and to help out on the parades. I need a list from each chapter of names of volunteers willing to work these positions. I need to get these lists by the 15th of May at the latest. As I get more information as to what is involved, I will pass it on. It will mean a couple hours per day for anyone who volunteers. If we can get enough to sign up, it could mean only 1 session each. Directors, send info to gmail.com. On another item for Wing Ding, I would like a general idea from each chapter on how many plan to attend. It would also be nice to know how many are planning to attend the Red Deer rally. Remember, the rally team works hard to put on a fun rally, and the rally is the only way that the region raises funds for training sessions, as well as other region business. We have 100 rooms booked at the Quality Inn and the Lions Campground is now accepting reservations. Check out the registration form on the Region J website. With the warmer weather, chapters will be starting to have their individual fund raisers. Remember, if we attend and support other chapters, the odds are greater that they will attend and support yours. Just saying. See you all down the road. In the meantime, ATGATT!

Wing Wag April 2016 Page 4 Greeting Cards: If you know of any member, their spouse, or immediate family who would appreciate receiving a greeting card from our Chapter please contact Judy Istvan, address nucleus.com. Judy will arrange to send the appropriate card on behalf of the Calgary Chapter. Veterans Food Bank: Please remember the men and women who committed themselves to ensure the freedoms that all Canadians enjoy every day of our lives. Bring your non-perishable food items or monetary contributions to the Monthly Chapter Meetings and help support the Veteran's Food Bank. Thank you to all who choose to support this worthwhile cause. Two Wheel Sunday: Last year this was a big hit and is scheduled for June 5th this year from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Location is A Street NE, Calgary, AB. Bringing all mototcycle groups, shops, riders, and enthusiasts to one place at one time. Road Captain Course: Saturday, April 30,2016 from 9AM-Noon. Community Room at the Coop in Rocky Ridge (1000, Rocky Valley Drive NW). There is no cost for this course, but you must be a GWRRA member in good standing to attend the course. We will have a two hour classroom portion, followed by a 30 minute road ride to put what we have learned into practice. Co-riders are invited to attend should they wish to. Also, a CB is not mandatory, but as you will learn, it is very useful. Please call or hotmail.com to register for this course. Medic First Aid Course: We are looking at scheduling one or two Medic First Aid classes in April/May. If you are interested in attending one of these classes, please let me know. When replying, please indicate if this is your first time attending our Medic First Aid course, or if this is a renewal of the Medic First Aid course. The cost of the course will be $40. The class is a full day course and will take place on a Saturday or Sunday. Contact Tracy Boyda by telus.net Help for a Member: Lance Medcalf has a problem he is hoping a GWRRA member may be able to help him with. He purchased a Scalarider-Packtalk Bluetooth intercom system and is having problems setting both the intercom and CB. If anyone can help or knows someone who can, he would appreciate it. Please contact him at , or lk.medcalf@ gmail.com MEETING SCHEDULE DAY/DATE April Monthly Meeting May 9... 8 Wing Wag April 2016 Page 8 By: Roger Matas I watched something on line recently which talked about how the Gold Wing is the most complex motorcycle ever built and has more parts than a Honda Civic. It is a complicated piece of machinery, but in some respects it may not be the most up to date, or technologically advanced. I wanted to share with you some of my technological observations and the way I've been able to blend the older Honda technology with new to make my Gold Wing riding safer and more convenient. I'm a gadget nut. I don't necessarily need to have the latest and greatest gadget, but I try really hard to justify the cost of getting something new, especially when it comes to communications and technology. I was able to justify the new computer when Windows said it would no longer support XP. I was able to justify the new Android phone when it seemed my Blackberry just wasn't fast enough. So, when I returned to motorcycling last year, I had to research and then justify some technology for the bike. The first thing I did after buying all the requisite gear such as helmet, jacket, etc., was to look into communication. We didn't have a Gold Wing at the time, so I wanted to find an intercom solution to allow my wife and I to communicate. After looking into what's available, I ended up with the Sena 20S which is just about as hightech as you can go right now. This little device has the latest Bluetooth technology and packs a lot of features into one little package. There are several brands out there, but I'm glad I chose Sena because of what I later learned was available. With the 20S connected to the helmet (installation took about 10 minutes), I can answer and talk on my phone, listen to stereo music from my phone, listen to FM radio, talk to my passenger, let my passenger hear my music, and have intercom connections with 8 other people, one of whom can have any brand of communicator. This is straight through Bluetooth and does not use my phone's cellular or data connections. It's not complicated to set up as you can download an app for your phone which you use to control the Sena device. I haven't yet used it to talk to other riders but it works great for all the other features. I use it all the time for music. I have used it to answer and talk on the phone as well. The noise-cancelling microphone really works. The system has priorities so it dims the music if you're talking on the intercom or the phone. With the 20S working in my helmet as the basis for my communications, I added some other features which I think will be really slick. I've added 2 apps to my phone which give me inhelmet information and allow me to do things hands free. One is an assistant app, similar to Apple's Siri, with which I can communicate verbally. It reads texts to me, and I can reply. I can also control other features of my phone through the app including telling it to call someone. I've also installed a GPS app called Copilot. Once I program a destination, this app provides turn by turn directions, through Bluetooth, to my helmet. I don't need to be glancing down at a GPS on my handlebars or elsewhere therefore taking my eyes off the road. This app is supposedly updated quarterly, and (Continued on page 9)

Wing Wag April 2016 Page 9 (Continued from page 8) seems to be fairly up to date when it comes to its database. Unlike Google Maps, for example, Copilot does not rely on an Internet connection so it's available regardless whether you have coverage. Ok, so now I have phone, intercom, GPS, and music, all in my helmet. You're asking how that helps me when I'm out with the GWRRA group and want to communicate with my fellow riders, none of whom have Bluetooth headsets? Technology to the rescue again. It didn't take me too long to find a way to blend our Gold Wing's old CB technology with the new stuff. Sierra Electronics has created a plug and play harness which creates an interface between the bike and the helmet. Essentially it creates a Bluetooth intercom connection just as if I was connected to another rider. Except, in this case, I'm connected to anything going through the bike's audio system--radio, CB, weather radio, etc. It plugs into the connector under the left fairing pocket so it really becomes part of the bike's system. You use the stock push to talk switch. Because the Sena system prioritizes communication, other sound is dimmed when you're using the CB and because the Sena has that great noise cancelling mike, you're easy to hear by the other riders. The hardest part of the installation was uncoupling the stock connector for the wired headset. I may have to give up my Man Card because I had to go to Rocky Mountain Honda for help. That's as bad as asking for directions. There was so little slack in the cable I couldn't get enough leverage to pull the connector apart. Jeremy at Rocky Mountain helped me out. This solution isn't cheap, but it's all about the gadgets, not the cost, as long as I can create the justification. Want to go further? How about if someone doesn't have a CB? What if you're on the road with someone in a car? I've figured out a fix for that too. As part of my gadget collection I have a number of FRS radios. These are the little handheld radios which are supposed to give you 40km range. Of course they don't, but they can be used for decent medium-range communications. My wife and I use them in large malls and stores when she wanders off and gets lost. There are ways and devices to create another one of those Bluetooth intercom connections with FRS and other 2-way radios such as portable Ham radios. You'd have the portable radio strapped somewhere on the bike and you'd need a cable to connect between the radio and the Bluetooth device which has its own push to talk switch. But that's going too far even for me. At least at this point. What I've rigged up is a simple cable which connects the FRS radio directly to the auxiliary input of my helmet. I can't transmit through the radio, but I can listen to my wife, or someone else in a car travelling with me. My conversations with my wife are usually one-way anyway. So, with a little research and a credit card, there are ways to bring our rides and our communications into the 21st century. I'm looking forward to being able to hear and contribute to the conversations going on around me during our group rides.

Wing Wag April 2016 Page 12 Here we are once again, it s that time of year to have another Bunco Night. This has become a very popular event and it is our pleasure to host it again. So, don t delay in replying to this confirming your attendance as there is a limit on attendees. It s a great way to meet people, it s easy, it s fun, it s friendly, non-intrusive, and affordable. For those of you who didn t attend last year or are new to GWRRA and don t know what Bunco is all about, here is a Reader s Digest version of the game. The game began in 18 th century England as a game called Eight-Dice Cloth, and is enjoying a surge in popularity. According to the World Bunco Association, this new interest stems from a return to traditional family values, a sense of neighborhood and community, and the desire and need for social interaction. Bunco is played with 4 players per table, players take turns to roll three dice, players rotate from table to table, a winner will be determined at the completion of the tournament. Suffice it to say the rules are easy to follow and understand and you will catch on very quickly and there are three other people at your table that will help you. AGENDA Date: Saturday, April 30 th, 2016 Location: th Street SE, Calgary, Alberta Time: Start 5:30 p.m.; Dinner & refreshments (Sammy s Pizza & Salad) 6:00 p.m.; Games start: 7:00 p.m.; Intermission: ~8:15 p.m.; Award Prizes - Wrap-up by 9:30 10:00 p.m. Cost $15 per person Package includes Sammy s world famous pizza, salad, beverages, dessert, prizes and a fun filled evening. Rather than a pot luck dessert table as was the tradition in the past, dessert will be provided. We thought that we would change things up a bit, making it a little easier for all. IMPORTANT: For more information on Bunco go online at toknow.com/bunco_game_rules As this event is sponsored by the Breakfast Club you are able to bring your own refreshments. Water, coffee, and soda drinks will be available at this event. Please let me know if you are planning on joining us on this fun filled night by contacting Ron Syroishka at (Home) or telus.net no later than Monday, April 25, Thank you in advance for your attention and participation in this event.
