1 TopCap June 2014 The Newsletter of the Ottawa Remote Control Club The Newsletter of the Ottawa Remote Control Club President's Message Greetings Fellow Aviator s I ll keep this short and sweet due to my own unfortunate circumstances. A special thanks to John McDougall for the excellent Heli Event he put together once again for us. There was an excellent turnout and it appeared all had a very good time. I also have to thank Rick Ward. On his own he gathered all the various bits and pieces left in the container donated by our fellow members as well as fellow hobbyists He managed to get all the motors etc functioning labeled and organized for a silent auction beginning at the Winter Fun Fly and winding up at the Heli Fun Fly. This generated a considerable amount of money which is to be put towards our Flight School.

2 Its members like Rick and others who step forward and make an effort that benefits the Club as well as the membership that make a real difference. Coming up on June 28 th is our Warbird Event and Pig Roast. This is our only event until September and hopefully our membership will come out and join in the fun. This event is by no means restricted to just Warbirds, its open to all types and kinds of aircraft. Friends and families are all welcome. Brent guarantee s this years pig will be the best one yet. Lunch and refreshments will also be available and afterwards night flying and a bonfire. Camping is available (no hookups) Our rain date is Sunday the 29 th. So far the weather is looking good so I hope to see you all there!! Have a safe and enjoyable summer of flying.

4 We had a great turnout for our recent helicopter fun fly in early May. A Big Thank you to John McDougall, our helicopters chairman for organizing the event, and our fearless leader, Paul Bradbeer on the barbecue tongs. Lots of rotary wings beating the air, and lots of prizes for the pilots, thanks to our loyal sponsors!

6 Thanks to Paul Penna, Aurele Alain, and Rob Brun del Re for providing the attached proposal to access the "Ultimate Park" operated by the Ottawa Carlton Ultimate Association. A very interesting proposal! I expect that there is still some work to do to see what might be required to have the field certified by MAAC. Executive Summary Field Proposal This proposal presents the case for registering Ultimate Park (UP) in Greely with MAAC as an electric only, 2.4 GHz only, Radio Controlled aircraft field, for ORCC use on a scheduled basis. Background An ORCC member (Rob Brun del Re) approached the President of the Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Assocation (OCUA) for the potential use of Ultimate Park for RC electric aircraft. The query was extremely well received and was followed up by a meeting between Aurele Alain and Rob Brun del Re with the President of the OCUA in February This meeting was quite fruitful, leading to further dialogue and a joint site visit in mid-may The OCUA is impressed with the ORCC and the proposed use of UP, and remains of the opinion that use of UP by the ORCC on a scheduled basis is most welcome. Proposal Ultimate Park is a facility located at 1295 Manotick Station Road, Greely, Ontario (GPS coordinates: Latitude: , Longitude: ). The property is owned by the OCUA. The site consists of 19 soccer-type fields, with on-site parking, an irrigation system, washroom facilities and metal storage sheds; however, UP will be free of any poles or field markers when used by ORCC. A site plan sketch is attached at the end of this document. A link to a plan view showing how the OCUA divides the property into individual playing fields is given here: Ultimate Park is used by the OCUA for ultimate games mostly in the evenings. It is free most daytimes and weekends (tournaments and special events excepted). As a result, the site is

7 presently unofficially used, often by unwelcome locals such as four-wheelers and others who damage the turf. For this reason, the OCUA welcomes sanctioned use of UP by the ORCC. We propose that the ORCC sponsor registration of UP with MAAC, for electric only, 2.4 GHz only, RC aircraft use, for the following reasons: 1. The site is ideal for electric aircraft. It is a large green space, sheltered from the road and surrounding residences (such as they are) by woods and marsh. The site is fenced, with a locked entry and has parking, storage and washroom facilities; 2. The OCUA is most keen to have a second, sanctioned use for UP as pressure is mounting from other, less desirable actors. These include unwelcome trespassers who damage the turf, developers, and less organized individuals without affiliation to an organized group (thereby posing a potential liability to the OCUA); 3. This arrangement comes at no cost to the ORCC. Any fees remitted to the OCUA for the use of their field (they haven t asked for any) would come from the donations of a subset of ORCC members who use the field. That is, the field will be managed much like the Carleton Fieldhouse is managed for winter Indoor Flying: only those who fly there will be asked to contribute to a donation to the OCUA; 4. OCUA is quite willing to negotiate a schedule for RC aircraft use of UP. This schedule would consist mostly of daytime use, and weekends when UP is not being used for ultimate tournaments or games. This scheduling is advantageous to both parties. 5. OCUA has indicated they could arrange concessions services from their junior members, giving them the chance to earn some revenue. This would be particularly welcome for any flying events held at UP, and presents a real win-win scenario for the two groups. 6. The site would be a welcome addition as a back-up site for the ORCC glider group (the glider field occasionally suffers the ravages of a dry summer and is declared off-limits by the owners; UP is irrigated regularly and will remain available for flying all summer, subject to the negotiated schedule). 7. The site is quite centrally located and accessible from east, west and central city dwellers (it s approximately 20 minutes from Bank and Hunt Club); 8. Increased visibility of RC use at this location could easily lead to increased membership in the sport and in the ORCC. Recommendation
