Who says Kay s article has to be first. We are trying to not be the same each month, we hope you like it. From our Chapter Membership Coordinators: Hello everyone and welcome 2019! A new year brings new adventures, new beginnings, and to put the past behind us. Mike and I are so excited to focus on growing Chapter W with new faces, safe travels, and having some of the best rides ever. We would like to welcome Gary and Debbie Davis back to Chapter W. It s been a long time waiting but they are BACK!!! Also, we were able to meet Jamie at our January gathering. Keith and Mike were able to take an approximate 160-mile ride with him on January 6th, burr. That s what I call dedication. Hope to see more of him and his wife soon. Remember, there are lots of exciting trips coming. Winter Rendezvous, Missouri Spring Fling, and the list goes on and on. If someone knows of a place or a specific ride they would like to go on, there are always a couple of guys that would love to help you map it out or even lead if needed. Please don t hesitate to ask, especially this time of year. Please come and join us in the new adventures of Chapter W. The best is yet to come, Mike and Beck Your MEC s
Too Cold to Ride (Except for Keith, Mike and Jamie) January/February Card Parties How about warming up your insides with Card Parties, great food, great friends and a great time. Isn t it just GREAT? To start, how about a visit to Kim and Keith's on Saturday January 26th at 6:00pm. Give them a call for directions at To start February out the Card Party will be at the Kay and Lee s on the 9th at 6:00pm. They can be reached at To end the shortest month of the year the Van Antwerp s Beck and Mike will be hosting the Card Party on February 23rd at 6:00pm. If you need directions, give them a call at The parties are of course weather dependent as we want everyone to be safe.
A Short message from Kay It s almost Valentines Day!! January is almost over thank goodness. I thought all those nice warm days were too good to be true and it was. I hope everyone weathered the storm and was safe and especially warm. Thank you Beck and Mike for hosting the New Years Eve get together. You and Kim sure did a great job and I am still laughing at some of the baskets. We had to cancel the card party at our house because of the snow storm that almost was. It was terrible out all day and the most important thing is that everyone is safe. We are changing up the 3rd Wednesday Dinner Outing or just how we pick the restaurants. At the gathering everyone in attendance picked an envelope and in it there was a Month and possibly a prize. What I want to do is have one couple each month select their (not the chapter) favorite dining establishment. Yep someone might not like Central American Guinea Pig for dinner and that is okay. There is always a cheese sandwich to be ordered. So whatever month you have picked, make it your favorite place. All we ask is that you tell them a rowdy bunch of people are going to be there on the 3rd Wednesday. Winter Rendezvous costumes are coming along, who knew there was that much white and black felt in Indiana. We had a great time cutting, pinning, sewing and having everyone try it on over and over. More info to come. Kay
QUICK TIPS: Ten Things All Car & Truck Drivers Should Know About Motorcycles 1. Over half of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. Most of the time, the car or truck driver, not the motorcyclist, is at fault. There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don't "recognize" a motorcycle they ignore it (usually unintentionally). 2. Because of its narrow profile, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car s blind spots (door/roof pillars) or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc). Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you're changing lanes or turning at intersections. 3. Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle s speed. When checking traffic to turn at an intersection or into (or out of) a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks. 4. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning. 5. Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them. 6. Turn signals on a motorcycle usually are not self-canceling, thus some riders (especially beginners) sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle's signal is for real. 7. Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle's better characteristics, especially at slower speeds and with good road conditions, but don't expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way. 8. Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly difficult. Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle because you can't always stop "on a dime." 9. When a motorcycle is in motion, see more than the motorcycle see the person under the helmet, who could be your friend, neighbor, or relative. 10. If a driver crashes into a motorcyclist, bicyclist, or pedestrian and causes serious injury, the driver would likely never forgive himself/herself. 5/13

The Levels Program from our District Educators While spring may or not be here, our GWRRA riding and rally season is raring to go! As you get ready to head out to memorable destinations, take a minute to think about safety. Our Dr. s have a regime to keep us healthy and to identify and ward off potential issues before becoming catastrophic. The Doc s schedule med reviews, physicals, and periodic nether regions scoping s (YIKES!). All to ensure we re healthy, doing the right things to stay healthy, and spotting issues early. Ignoring your Doctor s recommendations is a recipe for disaster. GWRRA has a similar philosophy when it comes to riding our trusty steeds. It s the Levels Program. Similar to our doctors, the Levels Program has regularly scheduled evolutions making sure we re doing all we can to be safe while out riding. Level I is Safety by Commitment. You simply commit to ride safely. This is much like making a New Year s resolution to lead a healthier lifestyle. Every successful accomplishment begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective, safe riding. Committing to safety establishes a mindset where actions are observed through a safety lens and you think safety while riding. Level II is Safety by Training. You ve committed in Level I and now it s time to take action. After your healthier lifestyle resolution you go for a physical. At Level II you take a riding course. Riding courses provide you a current snapshot of your motorcycle skills, what to practice for improvement, and strategies to reduce risk in riding your bike or trike. Just as you get a physical every so often, to stay current in your safety commitment you need to take a riding course every three years. For Level II, you also have to have 5,000 accident free miles. Level III is Safety by Preparedness. Your doctor can t foresee every emergency you may encounter and so it is with riding motorcycles. We can t eliminate all risk so we need to be prepared in case of emergency. Level III supports preparedness by requiring CPR and First Aid training. This training has saved thousands of lives and spans your entire life, not just when riding. As with any other perishable skill, refresher training is required. To maintain Level III, you have to have CPR/FA training every two years (as well as maintain your Level II). Level IV, safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness, is GWRRA s recognition of YOUR COM- MITMENT to safety. This is recognized as achieving Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider status. This certification shows you have completed 25,000 safe miles, maintained your Level II and Level III requirements for a year, and committed to ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time). The Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider is for those special caring individuals desiring to "be all they can be" with regards to motorcycle safety. Please make the commitment to be a safer rider/co-rider. If you ve never participated in the Levels program, start. If you ve fallen off the wagon, you can pick up where you left off. Next month I ll go over how YOU are in control of your Levels Program destiny. Until next time. Rick and Debbie Warmels Indiana District Educators
