Spring has finally arrived and we will be able to ride more as the weather is getting warmer and drier every day. We are looking forward to a good year of riding this season, not like last year, where we ended up cancelling more rides than we actually rode. I am sure we will have some new faces on the rides this year as well as the old faces. Our Maintenance Day is fast approaching on April 9 th and it is considered a seminar by GWRRA standards. Believe it or not, maintenance day is always a FUN day in which the guys (or girls) can work on their bikes, and as always if you should need help, there s always someone to show you how it should be done. If you have not made your reservations for the Missouri State Rally in Branson Mo, you should do that as soon as possible to get the rooms you want. John & Cindy Ruegge Chapter Z Directors Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 3
Well this has been a quiet month again, we had our monthly dinner ride to Holland's and we had 10 members present. The weather is getting warmer every day, I for one am missing my Chapter Z family and can't wait to ride!!! Remember to watch those s for impromptu rides. Paul & Cheryl Engelman Chapter Z Assistant Directors Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 4
REDUCING THE RISK Mike and Barb Bayuk Chapter Z Educators ARE YOU GOING TO DO YOUR MAINTAINENCE? April is traditionally the month when most Goldwing Chapters plan an annual ritual known as Maintenance Day. This is when a group of GWRRA members gather together to drink coffee, eat donuts, then drink soda eat chili, chips, sloppy joes.oh yeah and work on their motorcycles! But seriously, our yearly maintenance days are a very important part of riding. It follows the GWRRA motto of Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge. We all have fun at these gatherings. The less experienced learn, the senior members teach the knowledge and by doing repairs it promotes safety. Let s look at some items found on past maintenance days. The photo on the left is goo in a clutch cylinder reservoir. The second is dark brown/cloudy brake line fluid from another riders brake lines. This is what you don t want to see. The brake and clutch fluids should be replaced and bled at least every 2 years. We know that brake/ clutch fluids are hygroscopic. This means over time the fluid takes up moisture that infiltrates the systems. The clear brake/clutch fluid will begin to look cloudy and can actually become gooey. The heat generated at the calipers and in the transmission can turn the fluid a dark color. When this happens; the efficiency of the brake/clutch fluid decreases. It also causes corrosion within the systems and could negatively affect its performance. This mainly means brake/clutch failure! Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 5
How about checking the chassis! Here are 2 different examples of cracks on a Goldwing frame by one of the frame welds. What about tires. Do your tires look like the picture on the left? I hope not! Note the tread wear indicator in the picture on the right. It s time to shop for new tires! As the Chapter Educator I cannot stress the importance of doing the TCLOCK on your motor cycle. Especially now at the beginning of the riding season. Maintenance days are times when the real Goldwing motto is exemplified; Friends gathering for FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE in preparing their motorcycles for the upcoming riding season. Chapter Z is having their Day on April 9th! BE THERE OR BE SQUARE! ARE YOU READY TO DO YOUR MAINTAINENCE DAY? AS ALWAYS RIDE OFTEN, RIDE HARD BUT MOST OF ALL RIDE SMART Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 6
Our Motto... Share the Road! Our Mission... To Facilitate A Reduction In Motorcycle Crashes With Other Motor Vehicles. Spring is here along with all the unpredictable weather patterns. We came across an article about riding in thunderstorms. Do not ride into a thunderstorm. If you can't get to a safe building or vehicle here are some last resort choices. If you wait it out under an overpass DO NOT touch steel girders. Move away from your bike. Stay on dry surfaces if possible. Overpasses are engineered structures and are likely grounded. If it is struck the current will channel down into the ground. Looking for a bridge stay away from water and metal surfaces. Be alert for rising water and high tension wires. If high voltage wires cross the road you may want to seek shelter directly underneath these wires as the lightning will seek them out instead of you. Stay 50 feet away from large metal towers which hold up the lines. These electric wires are designed for lightning strikes and the current will go deep into the ground. If you are caught in the open and lightning is occurring within 5 miles, stop, move 50 feet from your bike (big metal target), and try to find a ditch or low spot to sit and wait out the storm These recommendations are a last resort... you are not safe in these places, just marginally safer than in the open. Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from rainfall. If you can hear thunder you are in danger. If you can't get inside, or you feel your hair stand on end lightning is about to strike. Crouch down on the balls of your feet place your hands on your knees and lower your head. Make yourself the smallest target possible and minimize your contact with the ground. If there is a car available take shelter with the windows up. Rubber soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning. However the steel frame of a hard top vehicle provides increased protection if you re not touching metal. And if you make it through the storm... You'll have a great story to tell! Ride safe and smart friends Vernon and Pat Watts Motorcycle Awareness Division Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 7
