Chapter C s first weekly chapter ride got rained out but we still went to the Mandan Pizza Ranch for supper. Our chapter covers all of western ND, so my goal this year is to try to host a meeting in different cities in the chapter area. On Sunday, April 23rd, we hosted our first on the road meeting in Minot. Well ND weather again came into the picture. We had to take the 4 wheeled vehicles to make the trip from Bismarck. It was a great turn out with 19 people. We had a 50/50 with Pat McNally & Al Hanson as winners. I donated two of my scroll saw cut wooden bikes, Dave Holte won the two wheeled and Pat McNally the trike. Special thanks to Pure Honda, Specialties and Cecil Alg who donated door prizes. It was a great time talking with all the GWRRA members and others in the Minot area. Please remember May is Motorcycle Awareness Month!! 2 OUR EDUCATORS Scott and Kristine Eckroth Staying Warm Riding a motorcycle in cold weather comes down to one simple concept: insulation! Since most people aren't very active on a motorcycle, their body isn't doing much to produce heat on its own to counteract the cold. That means we have to do everything we can to insulate the body in order to keep what precious heat we do produce actually on our body, not floating off in the cold winter air. Insulation boils down to two things: layers (to slow the rate at which our body loses heat), and wind proofing (to keep the wind from stealing our heat). Layers Let's talk about layers first. Layers are critcal for riding a motorcycle in the cold weather. The number of layers you'll need to wear is based both on personal preference (some people naturally run a little hotter than others) and the temperature outside. The key is to have enough layers on that you feel comfortable (maybe even slightly warm) when you step outside and just stand in place(before you ride your motorcycle). Remember two things Your bottom layer should always be some type of snug fitting thermal or fleece underwear. This will create a warm layer of air between your body and this material. (Don't worry about buying the expensive wicking materials like Dri-Fit, etc. - you won't be sweating much so it won't do you much good) Don t wear so many layers that you lose mobility. If you can't hold your arms at your side because of all your clothing, than it's probably time to invest in either some warmer, or even heated, clothing. Wind Proofing Now, let's talk about wind proofing. A big issue you will have when riding a motorcycle is keeping the wind out. Wind, specifically wind chill, is your worst enemy on a motorcycle in cold weather. Doing everything you can to stop this enemy is going to go a long way to helping you ride your motorcycle comfortably in the cold. Wind-proofing also takes the most trial and error to perfect. It can take quite a while before you finally plug all of those air leaks! The main thing to do for wind-proofing is to make sure your outer layer is some type of windproof material. Leather is by far the most popular choice for this. Ideally, you should look for something that is both wind-proof and water-proof. There are many man-made materials that meet that criteria. Here are a few additional thoughts on wind-proofing: A windshield on your motorcycle helps block the wind. While not stylish, duck tape can do wonders to seal any leaks you might have. Wear a full face motorcycle helmet with some type of covering for your neck and head - maybe a balaclava. Most of your heat is lost through your head so do your best to keep it warm! Put newspaper on your chest between your outer layer and the layer underneath it - this does wonders for blocking the wind (a tip learned while racing bikes)! May 2017 Page 2 of 10

For every 1,000 miles ridden (or fraction thereof) participants get a ticket. Ending mileage must be read on or before the November social by an Officer. All tickets will entered into a drawing that will be held during the Holiday Social - winners don t need to be present to win. There will be a secondary contest for closest guess of average number of miles driven during the 2017 riding season. 9 Trike Course 2017 Saturday, June 24-8:00am - 5:00pm and Sunday, June 25-8:00am (we may finish earlier depending the number of trainees) Saturday training includes both classroom and range instruction. This is advantageous to those that are new or newer to riding a Trike (others that have done training elsewhere may need the classroom training as well). Sunday will be range training only course for those that may have previously completed the classroom/range instruction (training will be four to five hours, depending on number of trainees) Classroom portion will be held at the New Brighton Community Center and the range portion at Mounds View High School in Minneapolis - just ½ mile from the range. Instructors are Dan and Kris, and they know their stuff! Trike fees are calculated to cover only the expenses of the course so, the more participants the lower the fee. Once there is an idea of the number of trainees fees will be set. Fees are per trike and the cost is the same with or without classroom training. If you know anyone else that might be interested, please let me know. We do still have open spots both days. Please RSVP to my below no later than March 30 th if they are interested.
