Operations and Innovations in the Railway Industry Raúl Coleto Sierra Idom Infrastructures. Responsible for Middle East
Introduction Railway development is undergoing large changes in the XXI century by interconnecting cities with High Speed Lines providing people mobility in towns with Underground Systems and Trams
Introduction For the majority of the, population, Rolling Stock is the most evident indication of this railway innovation during the last decade with aerodynamic trains going up to 350 km/h between cities even faster. or driverless trains moving a large numbers in towns
Introduction but other innovations have been required in Infrastructure construction methods Architecture Energy supply installations Signaling Train safety and automatic operation of trains Telecommunications,
GCC railway projects challenges How innovations can improve design and operation in the railway industry INNOVATIONS IMPROVING DESIGN AND OPERATION (some examples ) 1. Architectural design adapted to special conditions of railway operations 2. Analysis of alignment options 3. GIS tools to improve operation 4. Software to calculate and design energy supply system according to operation criteria 5. Tunnels. Models to simulate fluids behavior. 6. Training simulator for railway infrastructure operator
Who are we? Professional services Founded in 1957 Association of Professionals Offices in 16 countries 14 Offices in Spain Projects in more than 100 countries Over 2,500 professionals in 2011
Global vision Based on a multidisciplinary team and a key factor: Integration Urban integration - Accessibility Passenger flows Architectural design Train operation Railway lay-out
1 Architectural design adapted to special conditions of railway operations High Speed Train from Madrid to Valencia Innovation in Station Design Temporary Station
Valencia Rail Network New Rail Alignment Current Terminal Station New Station Approach stretch South Junction
Temporary Station Works 500 m

Paraguas hypar, Félix Candela 1952 Palazzo del Lavoro, P. L. Nervi 1961 Puerta de Atocha, Rafael Moneo 1992 Petrol Stations Repsol, Foster+Partners 1996 One goal of innovation: a reinterpretation of classical design
Valencia Joaquín Sorolla The short construction time: the structure conceived as a construction game
A light structure
In construction works, the module shows its effectiveness
Construction of the entire steel structure in 2 months

Simplicity of construction, architectural excellence
Success: Central location of Valencia station Madrid-Valencia, 391 km 1 h 35 min The new Valencia station, Joaquin Sorolla, has six platforms that serve nine tracks six are of international width The urbanization of the surrounding area includes the implementation of ground level parking, a new road, a city square and its integration within the existing urban neighbour.
Analysis of alignment options 2 m-mcda software Multi-criteria decision analysis Poland s new high-speed network
M-MCDA, multi-criteria analysis design software Multi-criteria decision analysis is used to help in finding the best performing alternative when many different criteria of evaluation with different scales of impact are present Idom has developed its own implementation of MCDA to obtain a software that is specially suited for civil engineering The MCDA method used is MACBETH (Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique) The software helps in the aggregation of all the information provided by multidisciplinary inputs.
M-MCDA, multi-criteria analysis design software Applied with success in designing the high-speed network in Poland 13 months to complete the optimum layout for the railway
Poland s new high-speed network 450 km long rail Up to 350 km/h 10 million people with direct access to the high speed network Construction starts in 2014 Operation in 2018
3 GIS tools to improve operation Monitoring of major infrastructure works

Software to calculate and design energy supply system 4 Model REPS
A A kv Software to calculate and design energy supply system Idom-REPS simulates voltage and intensity distribution in railway networks to optimize the design and position of transformer substations. It reduces time to calculate the energy supply installations, optimizing the results obtained Tensiones en Catenaria. 30 5 Tunnels. Models to simulate fluids behaviour Barcelona Metro Line 9
Barcelona Metro Line 9 Innovative Approach to Station Design: Deep tunnels required due to density of urban environment. Fire Safety Design very important. When a fire breaks out in a subway tunnel, the mortal trap tends not to be the fire, but the smoke. Idom is researching new ways to design these tunnels to prevent toxic gases from accumulating in the interior of the tunnel.
Simulation Model of train arriving into a station with a fire in the bogie. Models how the smoke enters the platform and is distributed in the station. Knowledge leads to optimum evacuation strategy. Smoke Streamlines Model in the vestibule of the Singuerlin Metro Station Barcelona. This simulation enables us to determine the flow and pressure of the ventilators that will give rise to the optimum wind speeds in each scenario (daily operation and event of a fire)
Fluid Dynamics Model of the same Station. Results of the models were finally confirmed by in situ trails conducted in the station and tunnel.
VENTILATION IN TUNNELS AND STATIONS TO EVACUATE SMOKE (L9 BARCELONA) Tridimensional models were used to model the behaviour of fire and smoke in tunnels and stations Smoke models combined with crowd movement simulation models to ensure that the smoke and crowd evacuation are coordinated Models ensure the optimum design of the ventilation for both normal running and smoke evacuation Crowd modelling allows the architects to design a more efficient and safe station The holistic approach to station modelling ensures that all parts of the station work together, from the ventilation, to the access controls and evacuation strategy Design innovation allows safer and more economical stations
6 Training simulator for railway infrastructure operator For Spanish national railway administrator (ADIF)
Training Simulator for Railway Operation Control Centre Operators Developed for Spanish National Railway Administration, Adif, to help the training of the Control Centre Operator Benefits for the Railway administration based on: >Training operators in danger situations with no impact on the infrastructure >Real against theoretical approach training Based on a software simulation environment composed of the following modules: >Train simulation >Field element simulation: signals, point machines, track circuits, etc. >Train control equipment like: interlocking, block systems. >ERTMS/ETCS simulator >Virtual actors simulation behaviour with real voice communication with the student operator like: drivers, maintenance staff, other OCC and station operators, etc.
Training Simulator for Railway Operation Control Centre Operators Three different types of exercises: >Step by step actions for beginners on train control centres >The student operates a section of the 800 km railway network with 80 station of different types in size and technology, already developed with a predefined operation plan. The system has the possibility of generating incidents over the infrastructure equipment and on other trains. >Collaborative exercises: free exercises for several students, up to 6, in the same infrastructure with several operators from the OCC and/or local station operators.
Training Simulator for Railway Operation Control Centre Operators Open software architecture to permit: >Creating new stations and new lines >Importing operation plan from existing networks >Open communication modules for connecting the system to existing control centres >Creating new rules of behaviour and evaluation for each particular operations regulation of the different railway administrations.
Training Simulator for Railway Operation Control Centre Operators Configuration for ADIF: >6 training rooms installed in Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, León and Miranda. >Each training room are equipped with 1 teacher and 6 student work stations >Centralized server for storage and creation of all information concerning exercises and training itineraries for students.
Training Simulator for Railway Operation Control Centre Operators
Training Simulator for Railway Operation Control Centre Operators User friendly tool Repeatable for other railway networks, even Metro network Compatible with other Railway operator simulators Easy to operate
