1 City of Highland Weekly Report October 13, 2017 Public Services Used Oil Filter Exchange & Recycling Event JOIN US... Date: October 14th, 2017 Time: 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Location: AutoZone Base Line Highland, CA The San Bernardino County Fire Department s Household Hazardous Waste Program and the City of Highland s Public Services Division are hosting a free Used Oil Filter Exchange and Recycling Event. Keep in Mind 1. Bring up to 3 used oil filters to recycle and exchange for new oil filters 2. Expiration: Saturday, October 14 th at 2pm 3. Valid In-Store Only at the address listed above 4. No exchanges or refunds 5. Recycle oil filter safely: drain for 12 hours and transport in non-leaking container or bag. 6. Bring ID or utility bill for residency verification. Oil filters are composed of steel and are 100% recyclable; if all the filters sold each year in the U.S. were recycled, 160,000 tons of steel would be recovered. Recycling one ton of filters yields 1,700 pounds of steel, 30 gallons of used oil and saves 10 cubic yards of landfill space. Used oil filters can be recycled into new steel products, such as steel cans, cars, appliances and construction materials (for example, rebar). 4 P a g e 4 Administration Emergency Preparedness Maintaining your kit Just as important as putting your supplies together is maintaining them so they are safe to use when needed. Here are some tips to keep your supplies ready and in good condition: Keep canned food in a cool, dry place. Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers to protect from pests and to extend its shelf life. Throw out any canned good that becomes swollen, dented or corroded. Use foods before they go bad and replace them with fresh supplies. Place new items at the back of the storage area and older ones in the front. Change stored food and water supplies every six months. Be sure to write the date you store it on all containers. Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family s needs change. Check batteries. Throw out any that are corroded or discharged and replace with fresh ones. Check medication and first aid items. Throw out any that are beyond their expiration date and replace. Keep items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-tocarry containers, such as an unused trashcan, camping backpack, plastic tote bin or duffel bag. For more information about disaster preparedness, please visit Volunteer Services VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ~ SPECIAL EVENT CANCELLED Highland s Sound the Alarm Event has been CANCELLED for Saturday, October 14, 2017 and will be rescheduled at a later date. When: Saturday, October 14, 2017 Location: Highland Fire Station # Sterling Ave., San Bernardino, CA Time: 8am to 1pm Please read: with all the recent natural disasters the American Red Cross is committed to and with their recovery efforts they will be postponing our "Sound the Alarm" event on Saturday October 14th. We will look at a new date in the spring. There will be more information to follow. Please contact Volunteer Services for more information at extension 203.
5 P a g e 5 Public Services Saturday October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the next National Prescription Take Back Day. In the more than two years since new regulations made the disposal of controlled prescription drugs easier for patients and their caregivers, law enforcement agencies, pharmacies, hospitals and clinics have begun continuous collection of these medications. To visit a collection site between Take Back Days, go to to find your nearest location. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Your San Bernardino County Fire Department also has a great program that will take your Medications (excluding controlled substances, separate liquids from solids), at your local: Household Hazardous Waste (909) or OILY-CAT ( ) 2824 East W Street San Bernardino, CA Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Back in April of this year, the DEA and over 4,200 of its state, local, and tribal law enforcement partners collected 893,498 pounds of unwanted medicines about 447 tons at almost 5,400 sites spread through all 50 states, beating its previous high of 390 tons in the spring of 2014 by 57 tons, or more than 114,000 pounds. The top five states with the largest collections, in order, were Texas (almost 40 tons); California (32 tons); Wisconsin (31 tons); Illinois (24 tons); and Massachusetts (24 tons). The majority of prescription drug abusers report in surveys that they get their drugs from friends and family. Americans understand that cleaning out old prescription drugs from medicine cabinets, kitchen drawers, and bedside tables reduces accidents, thefts, and the misuse and abuse of these medicines, including the opioid painkillers that accounted for 20,808 drug overdoses 78 a day in 2014 (the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Eight out of 10 new heroin users began by abusing prescription painkillers and moved to heroin when they could no longer obtain or afford those painkillers. These results show that more Americans than ever are taking the important step of cleaning out their medicine cabinets and making homes safe from potential prescription drug abuse or theft, said DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg. Unwanted, expired or unused prescription medications are often an unintended catalyst for addiction. Take-Back events like these raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and offer the public a safe and anonymous way to help prevent substance abuse. For information on how to properly dispose of medications and other materials that could potentially harm the environment, such as cleaning products, paints, fertilizers/pesticides, automotive products like used motor oil and filters, please contact the City of Highland Public Services Division at ext. 271
