1 Dear Middletown Resident: Waste Management would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing us to provide waste and recycling services to Middletown. Updated information regarding waste and recycling services for Middletown residents can be found throughout this brochure. Sincerely, Waste Management Schedule The gray refuse cart and the blue recycling cart will be collected weekly. All materials should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. A 2014 Collection Calendar is included in this guide indicating holiday and special collections. Trash All regular household refuse must be put into the yellow Town PAYT bags and placed in the gray cart for collection. Visit for a complete list of stores selling PAYT bags ($1.75 per 15-gallon bag, and $2.00 per 33 gallon bag). Middletown has an annual user fee of $ for the trash and recycling program in addition to the price for PAYT bags. To help identify program users, you will receive a small sticker for each of your trash and recycling carts when the user fee is paid. As part of renewing your enrollment in the program, please remove the old sticker and place the new one in the same location. For newcustomers, the sticker should be placed on the front of the cart in the top right hand corner. The following items will NOT be accepted or collected as waste or as yardwaste: Dirt, sod, concrete or rock Household hazardous waste Construction/demolition debris Hot ashes or flammable materials such as oil, gas or paint Waste Management, Inc. 2 Cart Recycling Service All households have a blue cart for recycling. Recycling is collected every week on the same day as garbage, but at different times of the day. Please make sure to rinse containers as needed. The following items may be recycled: Paper Cardboard, Dairy and Juice Containers Tin/aluminum, Steel Cans Thin Cardboard & Newspapers Brown Paper Bags Plastic Bottles and Containers All Plastic Bottles and Containers up to 2 gallons. Disregard the numbers and the triangle. Cardboard Collapse boxes. 3 Recycling Each resident has a blue recycling cart. Your recycling container should be placed curbside every week on the same day as your regular trash collection. You do not need to sort your recyclables - all acceptable recyclable materials may go in your blue recycling cart. Please see the list of acceptable recyclable materials on the back of this brochure. Leave 3 feet between your waste and recycling carts and at least 12 feet overhead to allow the truck to collect both easily. If you still have a green recycling bin, please call Will Cronin at or wcronin@middletownri.com Tips for the best service Care and use of your cart: Always keep the lid closed to keep rain, snow and animals out. Clean your cart periodically. Since automated waste collection requires clearance for the vehicle s lifting mechanism, any cars parked at the curb should be at least 5 feet from the trash cart. Leaves and yard waste Leaves and yard waste (grass clippings, small branches, etc.) will be collected 23 weeks during the year (See Calendar for dates). All yard waste materials will be composted, so please DO NOT place any trash in with your yard waste. Yard waste must be placed in containers clearly marked Yard Waste or in paper compost bags and placed curbside on your regular collection day. Yard waste disposed in waste or recycling carts will not be collected. Containers/bags should weigh no more than 50 lbs and branches must be tied in bundles, no longer than 4 ft. Christmas trees will be collected on your regular collection day. Please put the trees at the curb the morning of your collection. Rain barrels Rain Barrels may be ordered at and picked up on April 5, between 9 a.m. and 12 Noon at the DPW, 19 Berkeley Ave. Please call if you have questions.

4 Bulky waste and white goods Bulky waste includes items that will not fit inside a PAYT bag like sofas, chairs, mattresses and carpets. White goods are refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwave ovens, and air conditioners, etc. For the collection of bulky items, residents must first purchase a bulky item sticker from the DPW at 19 Berkeley Avenue, between 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and then contact Waste Management at Sticker prices will vary depending on the item or items. Residents may also dispose of bulky waste by dropping it off at the Newport Transfer Station. Residents pay by weight, $ per ton with a minimum charge of $10. Bring a photo ID and a utility bill as proof of residency. Remember to donate your gently used items to Big Sisters, Boys & Girls club of Newport, Child & Family Services or Salvation Army or try giving it away using freecycle.org or craigslist.org. Bulk Waste Amnesty Days The Town of Middletown will also hold two free drop-off days on April 19th & September 27th, at the Second Beach Parking Lot. NO household trash or construction debris will be accepted. You MUST call to schedule a drop off appointment Household hazardous waste The Town of Middletown, with the help of Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, will host an Eco-Depot, a household hazardous waste collection April 19th in the main parking lot of Second Beach. A second event will be held June 21st in Portsmouth at the Portsmouth High School 120 Education Lane. The City of Newport will also be hosting an Eco-Depot on September 27th at 70 North Halsey St, Newport. These collections provide the residents of the community an opportunity to dispose of items such as cleaning chemicals, electronics, pesticides, garage chemicals, herbicides, etc. Call x241 to make an appointment.
