Ramesh Dept. of Civil Engineering, SRM University, Chennai, India ABSTRACT Transportation has always been a crucial aspect of human civilization, but it is only in the second half of the last century that the phenomenon of traffic congestion has become predominant due to the rapid increase in the number of vehicles and in the transportation demand in virtually all transportation modes. The Government has taken initiatives to develop the National Highways at the rate of about 20 km per day (i.e. about 7,300 km per year). Accordingly, an Average project implementation period of about 3 years, works of about 20,000 km is to be in progress at any point of time. Tamil Nadu is having a total road length of 1,99,040 km Tamil Nadu has about km of Highways network which is designated as National Highways and State Highways on the basis of traffic intensity and connectivity. There are 25 national highways in Tamil Nadu out of which 12 national highways runs within Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu has an extensive road network. State road network covers about 153 km per 100 km 2 area, which is higher than the country's average road network coverage of 103 km per 10 km 2 area. International Journal of Civil Engineering and Technology, 8(8), 2017, pp INTRODUCTION The rapid growth of Velachery as a commercial and residential hub, could be attributed to its geographical advantage in terms of the connectivity to other parts of the city. The Velachery main road on the south, connects the fastest growing suburbs of south Chennai and Mount Road (Anna Salai) at Guindy via Velachery. A section of this road connects Guindy and Velachery and is home to some of the oldest localities. The 100 ft Bye-pass road connects Guindy on the north west. The Taramani link road on the north east connects Velachery with Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR). The Jawaharlal Nehru Salai also called the 100 ft road or Inner Ring Road passes along the MRTS line and connects near the airport the GST road, an arterial road in Chennai. The Taramani Link Road in Velachery also connects to MGR Salai, an arterial road that connects to OMR. It acts as an important hub connecting the rapidly growing business class Information Technology corridor popularly called OMR; the more mature and wellconnected GST road and the Central Business Districts of the city, which has more relevance to the history of Chennai. Velachery as a whole draws a perfect balance between Old and New Chennai and is a phenomenon in terms of growth. The infrastructure of Velachery is a reflection of the lessons learnt from old Chennai and a glimpse of new Chennai Need for the Study Road traffic has been growing a very rapid rate in India during the past three decades. The number of motor vehicles has been growing at a rate around 10 percent per annum. The growth rate of various vehicle classes has been as under: Cars : 7.5 percent Buses : 5.3 percent Trucks : 6.2 percent Two wheelers : 17.2 percent As a result of the steep growth of motor vehicle population, the traffic on the roads has been increasing, both in terms of volume and intensity. The investments on roads have not kept pace with the growth of traffic, with the result there is severe congestion on the roads. Speeds are low and vehicle operating costs are high. Accident rate is also usually high. Traffic engineering measures provide a valuable tool to understand the problems and evolve suitable measure to overcome the deficiencies Scope of the Work To reduce the traffic congestions in and around the Vijayanagar junction, Velachery. To introduce and make use of new alternate routes in and around Vijayanagar junction, Velachery. Can avoid new construction of 2 way bridges. To make the traffic flow in a uniform manner, without having any stops at an intermediates. To give drivers and passengers, a smooth, tension- free and safe driving Objectives of the Work To identify the issues regarding traffic congestion in the study area. To conduct the traffic volume survey at Vijayanagar To analyze the traffic data. To suggest the suitable traffic management measures by reducing the conflict points in the Vijayanagar junction editor@iaeme.com

CONGESTION AREA IN VELACHERY Figure 4 shows the Congestion area in Velachery The frenzied traffic movement at Vijayanagar intersection in Velachery may soon be a thing of the past with the state highways department planning to build a multi-level flyover at the busy junction. STUP Consultants Limited has been appointed to conduct a detailed study and come up with a report on traffic pattern, project design and cost estimates. The flyover will cater to the huge vehicular population coming in from the suburbs. The Vijaya Nagar intersection is at the confluence of Velachery Bypass, Taramani Link Road, Velachery Main Road and the Velachery-Tambaram High Road. With growth in real estate in the recent years, traffic has become chaotic. The MTC bus terminus at the junction adds to the congestion. This is done by removing the signals and by diverting the routes and also by closing the side roads. This provides us less journey time with more satisfaction. This ensures safety and reduces accidents. This provides a uniform flow of traffic with no chaos and congestion. 5. SUMMARY Traffic intersections are problem spots on any highway, which contribute to a large share of accidents. For safe operation, these locations should be kept under some level of control depending upon the traffic quantity and behaviour. Based on this, intersections and interchanges are constructed. This is studied and analyzed at Velachery intersection.
