1 OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY APPLICATIONS IN COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS IN INDIA Professor Saifur Rahman Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute Virginia, USA Jamia Milia Islamia New Delhi, India 02 June 2016 Virginia Tech Research Center Arlington, Virginia, USA PPT slides will be available at
2 Presentation Outline Present situation of energy usage in commercial buildings Opportunities for energy efficiency applications in commercial buildings Technology and software for energy efficient buildings Electricity Use in Buildings Plug load 6% Others 26% Lighting load 38% HVAC 30% Three major loads in buildings: HVAC Lighting loads Plug loads Electricity use in US buildings Source: EIA - Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) mption#e1a 4 2
3 Commercial Building Sizes in the US Source: EIA - Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) umption#e1a Purpose and Objectives of Building Automation Buildings consume over 40% of the total energy consumption in the U.S. Over 90% of the buildings in the U.S. are either smallsized (<5,000 square feet) or medium-sized (between 5,000 sf and 50,000 sf). These buildings typically do not use Building Automation Systems (BAS) to monitor and control their building systems from a central location. A commercial building energy efficiency program can offer energy savings on a day-to-day basis. It can also facilitate Demand Response (DR) when needed. 3
