2 VARIABLE SPEED Drilling Machines Four-Spindle No. 2A R-P-Mster "Buffalo" R-P-Mster drills were the pioneers in variable speed drilling machines. Now they have been redesigned to give greater capacities. Three sizes are available, the No. IA rated at I" in mild steel, the No. 2A at IY2" and the No. 3A at 2". This bulletin describes and illustrates the No. 2A and 3A machines. Please refer to bulletin 3967 for description of the No. IA R-P-Mster. Again "Buffalo" leads by employing the use of timing belt drive in place of the conventional V-belt drive. Belt slippage even on low speeds has been completely eliminated. The necessity for belt "take up" due to stretch is also eliminated. You will be pleased with the sleek, trim, streamlined design; the massive and rugged construction; the neatness and accessibility of controls and especially the complete enclosure of the motor, starter, speed change mechanism, coolant system and electrical wiring. To fully appreciate the advantages offered in the "Buffalo" R-P-Mster, you should examine the machine itself-operate it under shop conditionssee how quickly the spindle speed may be raised or lowered by a touch of a lever. Frankly, there is no drill like the R-P-Mster on the market. We know that until you operate one, any description that we write here will not do it full justice. 2 BUFFALO FORGE COMPANY BUFFALO, N. 3 DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION SIZE AND CAP A CITY These husky machines are built with a 13" overhang-will drill to the center of a 26" circle. Can be furnished with or without back gears and with or without power feed. Ample space under the spindle nose is provided. This distance will accommodate 95% of all work. Raising blocks can be provided to further increase this space if desired. The heavy, accurate table is adequately ribbed and has a working surface of 23" x 22" (over 500 square inches) surrounded by an oil and chip channel. It is attached to the column on an accurately handscraped dovetail slide. Although the overall height of this machine is approximately 100", all controls are easily within reach of the operator. Pedestal models only are available and can be furnished in multiples of one to six. (Special applications arranged to suit your needs). DRIVE The unique characteristics of the "Buffalo" Variable-speed Drive is built around the timetested Reeves patent, utilizing the principles so successfully employed by them and coupled with a "Buffalo" design (patent applied for) calculated to almost double the variable range of speeds. With this variation of speeds, back gears may be employed to give a further reduction of 4-1, providing unlimited speeds within the range as listed on page 8. The speeds provided are suitable for all types of work within the capacity of the machine and will cover suitable speeds for drilling, tapping, spot-facing, counter-boring, hollow milling, etc. SPINDLE POWER FEED BACK GEARS SPEEDS Full Ball Bearing, 6-spline Alloy Steel. All-geared construction. Nickel Steel Ball Bearing. Changed instantly with motor running.

Speed Indicator-An accurate speed indicator shows actual spindle speed. Speed Control Handle-Conveniently located handle permits infinitely variable selection of speeds (within speed range) while machine is running. Torque-Controlled Power Feed-A power feed without "Torque Control" is like an electrical circuit without a fuse. "Buffalo" R-P-Mster power feed consists of an all-geared positive feed with a torque device on the feed shaft. It has been pre-set at the factory for the maximum torque that the machine can deliver. In the event that the machine is accidentally or intentionally severely overloaded, the "Torque Control" will slip and prevent possible gear breakage or other damage. The following are a few of the many advantages of "Buffalo" Torque-Controlled Power Feed. (a) Longer Machine Life. (b) Longer Tool Life. (c) Increased Production by being able to utilize maximum speed and feed for the size hole and material being drilled. (d) Minimizes down-time for maintenance and repair. (e) A hard spot in the material being drilled that would usually break a drill or the machine gearing, now only stops the power feed from feeding until the extreme pressure has been relieved by the spindle turning without feeding. It will then automatically start feeding again. (f) Prevents the operator from using a dull tool that would be detrimental to the work or to the machine. (g) Positively eliminates the danger of overloading the machine to the break-down point. Counter-Balance Bar-Regulates the spindle return to compensate for the weight of various chucks or tools. Feed Selector-A turn of the knob selects one of four rates of feed. Refer to specifications on back cover for available rates of feed. Left Hand Feed Handle-Used to engage power feed before drill enters the work if desired. Depth Stop-Quickly set for automatic disengagement of power feed and spindle return when drill reaches a predetermined depth. Also serves as a positive depth stop for sensitive hand feed drilling. Feed Handle-Advances spindle to the work and automatically engages the power feed. A reverse motion of the feed handle will disengage the power feed prior to the depth stop knock-out. 4 Start-Stop Push Button-Conveniently located on front of sliding head. Consult factory for locating push button other than shown. Right Hub Pin-Locks out the power feed for sensitive hand feed drilling. Spindle-Spindle is made of alloy steel with six driving splines. It is mounted in precision bearings of ample size to carry both radials and thrust loads. The spindle nose is fitted for No.4 Morse Taper on the No. 2A machine and No.5 Morse Taper on the No. 3A, thus allowing high speed drills to be used to the maximum capacity of the machine. Spindle Sleeve (Quill)-The spindle sleeve is of alloy steel with rack teeth cut integrally, eliminating the use of a large clumsy combination key and rack. The key is separate and of such size as to be proportionate to the diameter of the spindle sleeve. The ball bearings are mounted in oversize cages at the ends of the sleeve. This construction, while more expensive than the orthodox, permits the diameter to be held to a size which is in better proportion to the length of bearing in the sliding head. The value of this ratio of bearing length to diameter is readily appreciated by all technical and shop men. Fine Feed Handwheel-For accurate spotfacing, counter-boring and tool room work. Turn feed control knob to "Neutral" position, advance tool to work and engage power feed clutch. Sliding Head Clamp- (On left side of sliding head not shown). A Quarter turn of two clamp screw handles quickly releases the sliding head for adjustment within its 8" of travel. Sliding head is adequately counter-balanced for easy adjustment. Table-Heavily ribbed table has large working area completely surrounded by an oil trough of ample size. Gib block extends above table top to protect the pedestal dovetail from damage. Table-Raising Crank-Large square thread screws insure ease of table adjustment and provide a rigid support directly under the spindle. Table Locking Screw-Securely locks table gib to pedestal dovetail. Telescopic Return Pipe-Coolant is returned from the table to the base through this pipe. A screen at the top and a basket strainer at the bottom prevents chips from getting into the reservoir. Pedestal and Base-Made of heavy box type cast iron, well ribbed to insure vibration-free drilling. Multiple spindle pedestals and bases are of welded steel construction. MOTORS The No. 2A Machine can be powered with either a 3 H.P., 1800 RPM or 3 H.P., 1140 RPM motor. The No. 3A Machine is furnished with a 5 H.P., 1140 RPM motor. Slower motors can be furnished for special applications.

MOTOR CONTROL Following the most up-to-date machine tool practices, a magnetic control with overload and low voltage protection is provided, with a remote control push button station conveniently located within easy reach of the operator. The control proper is mounted on the inside of a removable vented door on the back of the upper column making it readily accessible for adjustment or repair. TAPPING The R-P-Mster can be equipped with one of three types of tapping devices: (I)-A friction type R P Ms-ter tapping attachment, (2)-Motor reverse control operated by a small lever switch, or (3)-Auto-. matic reverse feed handle control. The friction type attachment is familiar and needs no further explanation other than to say that any commercial make can be adapted to this machine. The motor reverse tapping is newer and is accomplished by means of a reversing magnetic control. Two and three phase motors only are adaptable to reverse tapping. On high production work it is advisable not to use power feed on the same spindle with reverse tapping. However, it is available and can be arranged for power feed and reverse tapping to be used on the same spindle. It is advisable to consult with our Engineering Department on such applications. All tapping motors are high torque, high slip. Taps %" and under are best tapped with a friction type attachment. ACCURACY These drills are made to limits which are considered suitable for commercial practice. Jobs requiring special accuracies can be furnished at additional cost.

Only the finest alloy steels are used in these machines and in most instances are beat treated before machining. This practice insures parts that are not warped or distorted by heat treatment and keeps parts to a standard size. Production methods are not used in assembly on these machines; each is individual, hand-scraped and bandfitted to insure permanent accuracy and long wear, free from service. 99" 24" M x.
