1 Humboldt County Hazardous Fuels Reduction Plan Update MAIN EEL FIRE PLANNING COMPARTMENT Characteristic Land Area Description 277 sq. miles (177,466) acres Population 811 Cities and Communities Alderpoint; Blocksburg Fire Safe Councils Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council (partially) Public Land and Tribal Ownership Six Rivers National Forest: 3,226 acres BLM: 3,21 acres Other Public Lands: 116 acres Compartment Description The Middle Fork of the Eel River, which drains the southeast portion of Humboldt County, is the main watershed in the Main Eel fire planning compartment. Much of the compartment has been used for timber production and harvested at various times in the recent past. This planning compartment contains mostly rugged, steep forestland with moderate-to-highly erodable soils. The population of the area is relatively low and scattered throughout the compartment. The Main Eel River planning compartment contains approximately three quarters moderate to heavily forest lands, with the remainder annual grassland, pine forest and chaparral. The predominant vegetative cover types include: fir forest, oak woodlands, annual grasslands, and redwood forest. Agricultural cropland accounts for less than one percent of the planning compartment. Local community fire planning efforts for the south-western portion of this planning compartment are managed by the Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council (SHFSC). Other key planning partners are large ranchland owners, Cal Fire, and the Alderpoint Fire Department. There is a fledgling local fire safe council emerging in the Fort Seward area that also has the potential to assist with continued fuels reduction planning and implementation. The County will continue to work closely with these groups and the local residents as future CWPP updates proceed
