4 Engine Research Center History Founded in 1946 by Phil Myers and Otto Uyehara. ERC has produced more than 500 graduates >65-year existence of ERC is evidence of indispensable role of the Internal Combustion engine in our society. Why the need for engine research at a university? IC Engines have been around for over a century - surely everything is known? significant advancements continue to be made every year. - today s engines are 99% cleaner and more fuel efficient than 25 yrs. ago Phil Myers: The engine is the ideal teaching tool it features all of the elements of engineering: materials, fluids, thermodynamics, lubrication, chemistry, electronics, etc. The only thing missing is nuclear reaction. Phil and Otto were pioneers in engine research: first to measure gas temperature in an operating engine - this led to new understandings of the combustion process and consequent improvements in the efficiency of engines. The process of learning and application of new knowledge continues today! 4 Engine Research Center
