2 Abstract Penn State University is conducting workforce training programs in Philadelphia at a mixed-use urban redevelopment site, The Philadelphia Navy Yard. The DOE Grid Smart Training Application and Resource (GridSTAR) Center and the Northern Mid- Atlantic Solar Education and Resource Center are co-operating to train new workers in renewable energy and its enabling smart grid technologies. Solar training concentrates on the design and installation of photovoltaic systems. GridSTAR is a broad program that creates offerings from the technician to Ph.D. level. Once the requisite skillsets are known and the market for them has been understood, credentials and curriculum are developed. The project is co-located with the Energy Efficient Building Hub for Energy Efficient Buildings, one of DOE s energy innovation hubs, and shares workforce and training best practices.
3 GridSTAR Center Basic Facts 3-year DOE investment, nonrenewable, managed by NETL ARRA Workforce and Training Grant Intent for sustainable operation based on revenue streams to be identified $5 million DOE investment if $5 million matching funds are provided $1 million Pennsylvania matching investment for research equipment Operating Activities in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and University Park Mission of economic development and job growth
