3 What s Smart City about? Smart Cities Dr. Fritz Rettberg Dec
4 Fast growth, urbanisation, economical issues and ecological sustainability are main challenges for cities worldwide Rapid growth puts the urban infrastructure under pressure and makes it difficult to maintain the quality of life of urban residents Higher need to manage carbon footprint and improve sustainability Improving the quality of life index is more crucial than ever for the preservation and attraction of trade, business and talent The ability to manage the urban infrastructure increasingly defines social, ecological and economic success. The "intelligent" electricity grid is one necessary condition! Another is the ability to break silos! Smart Cities Dr. Fritz Rettberg Dec

25 Conclusions Smart Cities Dr. Fritz Rettberg Dec
26 A city becomes smart by sustainable investments in human and social capital as well as in digitalization in order to enhance economic strength and quality of life. Digitalization and new technologies are instruments of a smart city. Not a goal! P Digital transformation in cities is an ongoing process without a specific goal. It s not about technology It s all about citizens! What is the most efficient and effective way to enhance the municipal services? Jobs Cost reduction Quality of life Interdisciplinary cooperation Partner Eco-system Public Private Partnership Horizontal Budget Smart Cities Dr. Fritz Rettberg Dec
