A brief outline history of 1/200th scale models produced in England by low-volume manufacturers, past and present, with notes on the makers. Compiled by Derek Barratt Spring 2008 Disclaimers: I should preface everything that follows by saying that most of it is written from an English perspective. I can lay little claim to any detailed knowledge of Continental 1/200th model history and leave the story of Austrian, Dutch, German and other Continental producers to those more qualified. In regard to the American scene I am more than happy, in fact compelled, to leave that subject to its foremost authority, Ron Crawford! So, although I may touch on models from outside the UK, please accept that the general drift is to do entirely with the 1/200th story as seen from these shores, and referring to metal models rather than their resin cousins. It should also be said that these notes focus upon the output of the smaller, low-volume producers from around 1985 onwards and I specifically exclude reference to most of the more recent ranges of 1/200th scale jet airliners. The majority of these models - and there is a bewildering host of them - originate in the Far East and full lists can easily be found elsewhere from other sources. Similarly, I make only limited reference to the extensive variety of 1/200th models offered by Collectors Aircraft Models, the UK's foremost 1/200th retailer. This is simply because details of their models, the majority falling within their own in-house brands, may easily be accessed through CAM's website, advertising and dedicated magazine; it would be pointless repetition to try to copy all of that here. Lastly, whatever is written below is based upon my own notes and observations, and any errors are therefore mine alone. Further details and any corrections are always welcome. 1 / 57

1/200th - The Collector's Scale: The description of 1/200th as "The Collector's Scale" was first coined in MetalModels advertising, to illustrate the advantages of the scale for displaying a collection of aeroplane models, reflecting the fact that quite a number can be arranged in a relatively small space. This benefit is ideal for most homes, where space is at a premium, and even more so when large collections can be assembled, as space and funds allow. Also, as the collection grows, it is easy to compare various models in proximity to each other, and fascinating to see the differences in size between different types, all to the same scale. The visual differences between a 1/200th B-17 and a B-52, for example, perfectly illustrate bomber development and similar progressions can equally well be seen in representative fighter models, airliners, transport types and so on. Quite an informative story can be portrayed in a small space with a handful of 1/200th models! Origins: The scale can trace its origins to the various ranges of aeroplane toys, of roughly 1/200th scale, commonly on sale from around 1930 to In the U.K. and France Dinky Toys dominated the market and many older collectors have fond recollections of these toys. French Solido, Danish Tekno, Italian Mercury and American Tootsitoy models amongst others swelled the ranks of small-scale metal models, whilst Wiking of Germany monopolised the 1/200th plastic scene for many years. All of these brands, and their lesser-known contemporaries, had ceased making small-scale aircraft models by the mid-1960s. In England Dinky Toys soldiered on for a few years with their "Big Planes" range, whilst Matchbox and Corgi Toys too produced some diecast toy aeroplanes, supplemented by cheap diecasts from the Far East. Most of these later toys, usually with garish and unrealistic finishes, lacked the charm of the earlier models and were eschewed by traditional collectors. By the mid-1960s the older toys had become recognised as obsolete, collectable items. Within a couple of decades many examples, especially those in good condition, were getting scarce and the rarest models were becoming much too expensive for most collectors. And, when these toys are considered dispassionately, they actually covered only a limited number of originals - the complete small-scale Dinky Toys range from 1934 to 1965, for example, covered less than fifty basic castings. (Wiking, which seemed to cover everything in their period, are excepted from this remark!). A void was thus created, with collectors frustrated at being unable to add to their collections for reasons of availability, price and quality, or simply discovering that their favourite prototypes were not modelled anyway. Coincidentally, at about this time, the wargaming hobby was 2 / 57

expanding to encompass aerial conflicts as well as land and sea battles, and some enthusiasts were thus in the market for miniature aeroplanes to meet their needs. In response, a number of castings appeared, mainly from small "cottage manufacturers" in England, to meet wargamers' requirements. These standardised on the very small 1/300th scale which, although ideal for the intended purpose, usually offered little in the way of detail. A few of these manufacturers then began to offer slightly larger 1/200th models and in so doing, laid the foundations for a whole new chapter of model aeroplane collecting. Since those early beginnings in the 1970s a number of 1/200th producers have appeared on the scene. Some brands survive whilst others have come and gone. Their collective output, past and present, now offers a wide scope for collectors today with most major aircraft types being represented in the scale. And, after thirty years or more of production, the hobby has matured to the point where many of the earlier - and possibly less sophisticated - models may be seen as interesting collectables, purely on the grounds of being scarce, interesting curios. It is also intriguing to note the gradually increasing competence of these models over the years, in terms of accuracy, detail and model size achieved, as makers' skills developed. These progressive improvements have been accompanied by innovations such the now widespread use of "rubber" tyres (actually hydraulic O-rings, pioneered by the Norfolk Group), the occasional use of etched-brass parts (Norfolk Group Piper Cub and C-47, Langton Models WW1 models fittings) and, very recently, the inclusion of clear canopies (Herpa fighters). The major development though has been the evolving ability to cast large parts, allowing easier and better construction of big 1/200th models which would not have been possible just ten or fifteen years ago. Looking at the 1/200th story from an historical viewpoint It is also worth noting that the English makers have generally followed the Dinky Toys tradition by producing metal models, usually fully-finished, with undercarriages and propellers, painted and boxed, whereas most Continental and U.S. producers have leant towards the Wiking method, offering unpainted, plastic-style resin items that emulate that firm's ID models. Manufacturing methods: The significant distinction between mass-produced models and their low-volume equivalents attended to below, aside from the size of production runs, lies in the actual method of manufacture. Factory-made, mass-produced die-casts such as Dinky Toys, Corgi Toys and the current crop from China, are made of mazak (zinc/tin/copper alloy) formed by high pressure die-casting, or from injection-moulded plastic, requiring expensive machinery capable of replicating the original in large numbers (an extreme example was a Dinky Toys model bus that went over half a million copies!). Such equipment calls for substantial investment, intensive use and long production runs to make a profit. By contrast the English low-volume makers adopt the entirely different, and far more affordable, technique of casting low melting point, lead-based 3 / 57

alloys (whitemetal) in rubber moulds using simple centrifugal casting machines. The difference in materials, and crucially in method, is important in that the costs of centrifugal casting are, relatively speaking, modest enough to permit short and speculative production runs - without that benefit it would be financially too risky to undertake making models of unusual and less recognised types. The downside of this technique is that the moulds may only last for a few hundred copies - rather than the diecast thousands - but that is usually more than enough to satisfy the demand for the resulting hand built models. Similar advantages accrue via resin casting, vis-à-vis injection-moulded plastic, but resin models are a subject for someone else, more versed in the topic, to write about! Master making: The centrifugal casting process mentioned above requires a master or pattern, or original (all three words are used in this text, their intended meaning being the same) of the model. Traditionally this is made of hard brass to withstand the heat and pressure of vulcanising the rubber mould (though the more recent introduction of room-temperature vulcanising rubber now allows masters to be made of much softer materials such as Perspex, wood or plastic). Making a brass master to a fine standard is an extremely skilled task and the work of the best is akin to that of a quality silversmith or gunsmith. In the same vein, the use of RTV rubber offers scope for intricate, controlled mould design and manufacture. This also calls for considerable skill if the best results are to be realised. The whole business of creating such an original is a matter of slide-rule, callipers, lathe, files and a trained eye - and a dash of artistry. This cottage-industry method is thus still far removed from the computer generated masters and dies of the major 21st century factory toy and model makers. Notes on English Low-volume Producers: Foremost in England amongst the pioneers of the early 1980s was Dennis Knight, creator of the Helmet Miniature Aircraft range. Most of these models were cast from C.A. "Tommy" Atkins' originals. Indeed, at this point, let it be said that many, or most of the subsequent English producers owe a huge debt to Tommy, as the master patternmaker responsible for creating the originals of many of their models. Without Tommy's stupendous efforts there would be far less of the English 1/200th production as we have come to know it! Other early birds in the field, responsible for their own masters and models, included John Alcott, Leighton Fletcher (Aerocrafts), Rod Langton (Langton Miniatures) and Skytrex Ltd. The 1990s saw a raft of new entrants to the 1/200th field, including Armitage Models, M. Johnson's Miniature Aircraft Models, The Norfolk Group, MetalModels, Aircast, The 4 / 57

Aerodrome, Hempsall Models and Vapour Trails, all contracting masters from Tommy Atkins. Amongst other makers arriving on the scene three names stand out - Martin Beacom (Small World Models), Western Models - a major producer in the field - and Eclipse Models, these three being unusual in not relying upon Tommy Atkins for their masters! Some brief notes about these constructors follow. As indicated above, not all of these enterprises are still extant. I hope though that the inclusion of a few details about such defunct brands may shed a little historic light on any examples of their models that new and future collectors may acquire. Aerocrafts: Leighton Fletcher's range featured fighter and trainer types, frequently those flown by the man himself (interestingly, both Tommy Atkins and Leighton were R.A.F. fighter pilots in the 1950s). Not only did Leighton create his own master models but he also produced the castings, by adapting the traditional jeweller's method of pouring hot metal into a handheld mould. He developed this technique to an advanced level and was able to accomplish some intricate results including a one-piece Galadiator. His Aerocrafts models were always sold as plain castings, though other producers such as Wojtek Benzinski, Fred Hempsall and MetalModels listed Aerocrafts in fully-finished form to order. A trickle of castings may still be available and any enquiries for these should be addressed to Chris at TOTS HQ. Aerodrome: "The Aerodrome" was the title adopted by David Austin for a series of 1/200th models, predominantly of civilian types, as an offshoot of his well-known Dinky Toys trading business. The masters for this series were, again, the handiwork of Tommy Atkins. It is thought that only a relatively small number of finished models appeared on the market, built by various hands for the Aerodrome. A small, engraved windsock under the wing identifies these models. MetalModels later purchased most of the masters and subsequent reissues do not have this feature. Aircast: 5 / 57

Simon demontfalcon created a limited series of intriguing and attractive models in the mid 1990s, under the Aircast name. These models, including the Supermarine 224 and SARO A1 flying-boat jet fighter, were all derived from Atkins masters. Memory suggests that they were sold either as plain castings or in finished and painted form. Aircast disappeared from the scene after a few years and the fate of the original models is unknown. Airpower: - see MetalModels. Allcott: In the 1980s John Alcott produced a limited number of beautifully made 1/200th models of large aircraft such as Super Constellations (reworked from Dinky Toys items), B-36 Peacemakers and WW2 R.A.F. bombers, all scratch-built. Some were sold in Veteran & Vintage packaging (the trade name of Vic Bailey's Brighton-based collectable toy business). They were expensive models for their time, in line with their superb quality, and survivors still stand comparison with later competitors today. Armitage Models: Michael Armitage produced a B-58 Hustler model in the early 1990's and this model was later acquired by Derek Barratt who reissued it, in more detailed form, in his MetalModels range. An F-111 was also proposed but the master was sold on to Brian Keates before any were sold. Mick was also instrumental in forming the Norfolk Group (q.v.). Atkins: see Hempsall Collectors Aircraft Models: 6 / 57

C.A.M. are the U.K's dominant retailer of aircraft display models and their catalogue offers a huge choice of 1/200th items (well over a thousand at time of writing). Their position in the market has been achieved by dint of unswerving enthusiasm, coupled with massive advertising, and they have been a driving force in bringing the 1/200th-collecting hobby to a wider audience. Many of their offerings are produced exclusively for them and, as already mentioned, full details may be found on their website. All that said, three of their in-house ranges deserve particular consideration by the discerning collector, in the writer's opinion, and should be highlighted here: The Croydon Classics series comprises very attractive replicas of 1930s airliners and the DH 86 Express and Handley Page HP-42 models should be in every collection - or on every wish list! Similarly, the Farnborough Classics Brabazon and Princess flying-boat are stunning large models whilst the Historic Aircraft Models XB-70 Valkyrie is another very impressive model. Cloud break Models: Over the last fifteen years or so Wojtek Benzinski has applied his skills to a variety of other maker's castings, especially Aerocrafts, and the superb results grace many a collection. As a former British Airways engineer, his painstaking approach is self-evident and nowhere more so than in his new array of Cloud break models, introduced in They encompass a diverse range of subjects, focusing on previously neglected types such as the DHC Beaver and Otter, Noorduyn Norseman and a choice of Austers. A further development is a link with MetalModels to produce models of the principal USAF jet fighters of the era and the first fruits of this collaboration may appear in Croydon Classics: - see Collectors Aircraft Models. Eclipse: Richard Bizley worked as a talented sub-contractor for Western Models, finishing their products before establishing his own range of modern jet fighter models under the Eclipse name. Not surprisingly, Western provided the castings for this range, and the models are particularly noteworthy for Richard's excellent, highly detailed finishes. More recently Richard has devoted an increasing amount of time to his successful Bizleyart company (he is also an extremely talented painter) and Helmet Miniatures have taken over the marketing of Eclipse models. Farnborough Classics: - see Collectors Aircraft Models. 7 / 57

Helmet Miniature Aircraft: Helmet models, in the main, have been offered as either fully finished items (with or without wheels & propellers, according to customer choice) or as plain castings for the buyer to assemble. "Factory" finished models may be identified by the DK monogram with date, painted on the undersides. Later Helmet releases included larger resin models, sourced from Ron Crawford's HBM range, with Helmet additions of metal propellers and undercarriages. Paul Howard and Ann Lister, who continue production of both kits and finished models under the "Helmet Historical Aircraft" label, purchased the entire Helmet range and business in More recently, they have also taken on an agency to sell the Eclipse range of models. Hempsall Models: Fred Hempsall employs his modelmaking skills across a variety of fields and his professional abilities are very evident in his 1/200th aeroplane models. His production includes models from his own catalogue as well as finishing other maker's castings to customer order. Fred has long collaborated with Tommy Atkins in the joint production of models of unusual subjects, usually types close to Tommy's heart! These shared projects, and items such as the interwar period R.A.F. flying-boats, may be found on Fred's list. It may also be mentioned that, at various times in the 1990s, prior to the overall disposal of most of his moulds and masters, Tommy sold off considerable quantities of uncollected and other forfeit castings, of various origins, along with some speculatively produced castings, to recover his outlay. Fred amongst others, including the writer, purchased these in some quantity and a dwindling stock of these items still remains, allowing occasional manufacture of otherwise long-gone models. Another speciality from the Hempsall works includes the full refinishing of Western Models products, to a professional standard, with the client supplying the model. Historic Aircraft Models: - see Collectors Aircraft Models. Miniature Aircraft Models: Melvyn Johnson released a series of R.A.F. jet fighter and trainer models around under the Miniature Aircraft Models label. These included some unique types in this scale such as a Gloster Javelin and Folland Gnat. All were sold built, painted and boxed. The masters were subsequently sold on to Brian Keates. 8 / 57

Melly was also a founder member of the Norfolk Group (q.v.). Langton Miniatures: Langton Miniatures, still in operation at the time of writing, produce an eclectic mix of 1/200th seaplanes and flying-boats, covering types that saw action around the coasts of Britain in WW1. These are sold as kits with whitemetal and etched-brass parts, which are so well presented that they appeal as collectable items in themselves and it is almost a shame to make them! Transfers (decals) are included. Langton Miniatures also produces an extensive range of ship models, including six different North Sea craft in 1/200th scale to complement the aeroplanes, along with three WW1 RNAS vehicles to the same scale. MetalModels: As indicated above, Derek Barratt started the MetalModels range of aircraft in 1991, the name being resurrected from an earlier essay into model railway items. The first years were spent building and painting other maker's items for resale, notably Aerocrafts and a number of the early HBM models (the first HBM models were metal castings, prior to the appearance of the universally-known resin range). The first actual MetalModels product, and the first of the Speed in the Air series, was the S6B. A second series of 1950s/1960s USAF types was launched later, most production being sold through Collectors Aircraft Models under the "Airpower" label, whilst a more recent introduction is the Golden Age range featuring various types from the 1930s. The majority of output (1500+ to date) has been of fully finished, boxed models, though a few kits were sold. All finished models carry either the MetalModels or Airpower decal below, or in the case of other makers' castings, a DB monogram may appear. These decals were never included with any kits. Most of the models in all three series are still available. Norfolk Group: 9 / 57

Mick Armitage, Melvyn Johnson, Derek Barratt and Chris Sayer were all aviation enthusiasts living in Norfolk, England, in the early 1990s. The first three had already commenced kitchen-table production of 1/200th models of small types under their own labels. However, all four had a common desire to produce models of rather larger types and, to share the heavier costs that would be involved, the Norfolk Group was formed between them for this purpose. The first joint effort was the Short Sunderland (the master being provided by Tommy Atkins, as was the case with most of their models), which was generally sold in kit form, though a handful of built-up models were also produced. This was followed by a short series of USAAF types, namely the L4 Piper Cub, C-47, B-26 and finally various marks of the B-17. The latter started life as a multi-part Atkins master which was passed to Leighton Fletcher for extra detailing and which emerged, cast by Leighton, with larger, one-piece, components. All, like the Sunderland, were usually sold as kits with just a few fully finished examples being offered. Various transfers were available for the C-47, allowing it to be finished as a USAAF Skytrain or an R.A.F. Dakota, or even in China National Airways DC-2½ form! One footnote, to answer future historians who may stumble upon it, is that a few models were advertised, and may even have been labelled, as "Macadam" kits, from the acronym MickAndChrisAndDerekAndMelvyn. During this period both Mick and Melvyn left the group to follow other interests, whilst Wojtek Benzinski joined to add his expertise to the effort, particularly in the shape of the later B-25 model. The Norfolk Group also produced models of the Heston-Napier Racer and the Miles M-52 jet prototype on behalf of John deuphaugh. Most of the Group's models are still available in kit form, whilst castings stocks last, from Chris via PM here on the site. Shed Models: Chris Sayer has blessed his new array of 1/200th kits with the appropriate name of "Shed Models", reflecting the inner sanctum from whence the new arrivals emerge! The choice of types in this new, 2008, line-up also reflects considerable discernment, as it comprises models of aircraft never seen before in the scale, including many gone but by no means forgotten machines. There is a definite nod towards local history with two impressive Boulton Paul creations, in the shape of the Overstrand and Sidestrand 1930s bombers, as well as a diverse array of minor and experimental types. Shed models will be mainly available in kit form though it 10 / 57

may be possible to undertake fully-finished articles to order. Skyfame: - see Vapour Trails. Skytrex Ltd: Skytrex are a long established firm catering for the wargamers market and they offer a wide selection of WW2 and modern aircraft. The models are sold as plain castings, for the buyer to finish and paint. The quality of their castings can be somewhat variable, though any shortcomings are compensated to a degree by the unusual types on offer - where else will you find a SAAB Drakken or Viggen, or A-10 Tankbuster in this scale? Skytrex also sell a vast range of military vehicles, many of which are in 1/200th scale, which is useful for anyone wishing to display their models in a diorama setting. Small World: Martin Beacom, proprietor of the Small World brand, has long been associated with quality modelmaking as the constructor behind many of the models sold through Aviation Retail Direct (formerly Mach 3 Models) under various in-house labels. His skills are nowadays crystallised within the Small World portfolio of classic airliners and transports, and it is understood that these will also be available direct from the maker in the future. It is also likely that the choice of models will be expanded as Martin is positioned to reintroduce items from the now departed Western range, finished to his own impeccable standard. Vapour Trails: In this instance the Vapour Trails name is that chosen by Brian Keates for his models and as such, is not to be confused with the earlier output of plastic 1/200th aeroplanes from Corgi Toys under the same brand name. Brian's list of models grew rapidly in the mid-1990s and their fine quality made them sought-after items. Later, Brian acquired Tommy Atkins' inventory of masters and moulds, comprising those models that Tommy had created speculatively and for his own satisfaction, which added yet more types to his already extensive product list. In a further move 11 / 57

Brian elected to supply Collectors Aircraft Models, on their customary exclusive basis, and direct sales of Vapour Trails models correspondingly ceased. CAM re-branded the range as Skyfame models. Today, in 2008, CAM lists Brian's F-4 Phantom and this model is something of a tour de forces, in that Brian offers the model in the markings of every single RAF squadron that operated the type. Further details are currently awaited regarding the availability of the rest of the Skyfame range. Western Models: One of the "big guns" in the English 1/200th story, Mike Stephen's Western Models was already a long-established and respected producer of fine-quality model cars, before attention was turned to diversifying into model aircraft. The impetus for this move no doubt arose from Mike's aviation interest as a keen private pilot. The first Western aeroplane to appear, and a portent of what was to follow, was the Bristol Freighter. This was swiftly followed by numerous classic airliner releases, with a liberal helping of USAF transports and the mighty B-36 and B-52 bombers. Few collections today are without some Western issues and they remain a significant element in the English 1/200th story. The business was sold in 2007, upon the founder's retirement, and though the masters have reportedly gone abroad, some future Western model derivations may appear here from Small World Models (q.v.).
