2 22 scaled Spine Booster Ok folks, so I have had a few questions come my way on the build of the 22 scaled Spine Booster I did for Todd Morton of Space:1999 Props and Ships Facebook page. So for those wanting to build their own Spine booster I have compiled the information I created here for you. I modeled this based on the Chris Trice/Andy H 44 scaled Spine Booster. Several of their detail points looked right and is what everyone thinks of when the topic is mentioned. Now having said that, this one and the one they did is an interpretation of the studio model. Several of the kit Id s are simply guesses and fall into the that looks good here category. On with the build: These are the plans I created for my own work. Print at1:1 (no scaling). I designed it this way so you don t have to measure and think too much. Just make sure your cuts are consistent in size that you do make. I used the following kits, feel free to substitute your own ideas/parts, and consider this a general guide. If I forgot something, sorry about that. Also I put the qty in length as needed so you will have to add up and make sure your order enough. Those without Length (Ie end caps) are simply given in qty. Some parts are completly scratch built as they simply are not available in the scale needed and/or are not a kit part: Parts from the Airfix German E boat and the rectangular engine block are noted here. This is not a step by step breakdown however as a scratchbuild goes it is fairly simple and is certainly easy enough to try your hand at! This after all is what the hobby is about, exploring and expanding your skill set to make a model as you see the final vision. So have fun, share and let s get on with it!

I have this listed in my notes, but not what I used. I think it was one of the walkway bottoms as it was close enough to mount the scratchbuilt undercarriage part onto. There is a couple of parts I don t recall what I used, just something either scratch built or spares laying around. Cost breakdown: Now I have listed the kits that I used, Total cost is around $ dollars for the kits PLUS the cost of the Plastruct materials PLUS engine bells. 6 Begin by printing the main blueprint pages. I could not find my original files so I had to scan the hard copies in. They should print at 100% (or no scaling or fit to page). Print one and measure to make sure it matches the dimensions printed on the page. I began by using the RT-16 tubing as the basis for the main sides of the body. These were clad with sheet styrene bits to complete the raised panel details. Use the plans for your sizing. These were then spaced apart and holes were drilled for the TB-12 tubing used to join the 2 pieces together. Just follow the plans for spacing and hole location!

7 I then built the tanks as per my drawing. TBL-16 is used both for the upper 2 tanks and smaller 2 side tanks. VHC 16 caps are used on the top tanks and the VHH-16 are used on the 2 side tanks. The Airfix Bloodhound provides the side detail on the upper tanks. VS 16 are used to mount the tanks to the body and the c channel for the upper 2 tanks. 2x VHE-24 glued back to back form the grey tanks. I test fitted these and cut the C- channel to length to support the upper 2 (orange) tanks.. The grey ones simply are pinned and glued in place after being joined together. C channel VS 16 Airfix Bloodhound missle cut and final sanded to shape At this stage I also constructed the 4 main body tanks. Once again follow the plans using the TBL-24 tubing and VHH 24 hemispeheres.

8 I then detailed the tanks with the plating. I used Vinyl tape (a quick and easy studio method used to make panels that are in scale thickness) And yes I had a pattern drawn out. Not sure where it went but I cannot find it. So just wing it and follow as close along as you like! Once painted and cleared the vinyl tape will hold down. When applying try not to handle the surface of where its being applied or the sticky side of the tape itself if possible for best adhesion prior to paint. With the basic body parts out of the way I tackled the details. So just follow along with the diagrams and pictures for kit bit placements. Of note: the Revell P51 mustang fuel tank was sectioned into 4 pieces and made smaller while retaining the overall shape. This was then molded and cast for each side. I covered with a pipe from the 1/72 Airfix Refueling set and the other with styrene straps.

10 Front details and note. The front wheels are from the Italeri M13/40. The middle channel is just a piece of C channel placed between the plate spaceing on the slopes. The two rectangular lower plate details are scratchbuilt These are made to resemble the Airfix German Eboat parts. 11 I created the 2 engine bell mounting blocks from 2 square blocks of styrene. I then drilled holes through the inside of the bell and the block so they screw together and into the body of the booster. The 2 blocks were just cut and glued until I was happy with the angles. You want the bells to not quite touch as they angle up and out at the same time. Have patience! Tamiya P51 Mustang landing gear Scratchbuilt blocks Small wheel detail. Aurora B-58 I think is what I used. But your choice. Piece of sprue bent to form pipe Fujimi Ausf D part or may substitue similiar.

12 The underside of the engine block was detailed with parts from some spare. On the Trice version these are tubes leading to the smaller thrust engines, so feel free to interpret on your own here! The side details are Tamiya P51 Mustang legs. On the Trice version these are B-52 parts. The engine bell extensions are made from TBL-18 and VHC-18 caps. Once again follow the drawings for size. 13 All right we are at the bottom detail. This is one of the main scratchbuild points. Now this is just an interpretation. Feel free to alter as you like. Parts used here are Tamiya P51 Mustang radiator, 1/76 Buffalo & Jeep plate (creates the green angle pieces seen below the white plate with holes). Styrene cut and made to mimic pattern from Airfix German Eboat. Styrene rod. Styrene or maybe platform from Revell Everything is Go! 14 Now onto completion. Build the tube portion for the underside detail following the plans from the TBL-12 stock. Once that is completed you can test fit and final mount all your parts as per the drawings. NOW IMPORTANT NOTE: I created a mount for this one from PS-4 pipe support clips. Simply drill and mount in the 4 corners of the inner side of the frame ring. See photos and plan(s). Airfix B-29 Superfortress landing gear
