3 Floating holder for MAPAL multi-cutting reamers When using reamers on lathes it is often necessary to compensate for axial error between the tool adapter and the bore to be machined. This error can be corrected either by aligning the tool on the machine or using a floating holder. A floating holder is particularly useful if the offset changes continuously due to the thermal expansion of the machine or at different positions on the cycle of the revolver. The floating holders familiar in the past have, however, significant weaknesses when used in conjunction with multi-cutting high performance reamers. ue to the function and the construction of these floating holders, when the tool starts to cut at the beginning of the bore, a very low cutting speed of maximum 15 m/min must be initially selected. After the machining of the first few millimetres it is then possible to increase to approximately 80 m/min, depending on the material and conditions on the machine. However these figures do not match the performance of modern high performance reamers, such as the MAPAL HPR reamers for instance. MAPAL has therefore developed a new floating holder for this special application. The mechanism inside the floating holder is designed such that the compensation direction, the floating path and the necessary force for deflection are optimal for a specific range of tool diameters used in the holder. This exact matching is particularly important on starting the cut. Specifically, as a result high cutting speeds are possible even at the start of the reaming operation. The new MAPAL floating holder for multi-cutting reamers has already been used successfully in multishift operation up to 160 m/min. The special design and the related quiet cutting behaviour achieved at the start of the cut also ensure improved surface finishes and geometry values. And as always during machining, it is also the case here that less vibration will result in increased tool life.
